When is the Last Time You Heard a Homily about Hell?

If you met him at his office, you wouldn’t think that a mild mannered man like him would be capable of it. He just didn’t seem like the hell and damnation type until he got into the pulpit.

True, maybe that was an era of the other extreme… but if that hellfire and brimstone stuff keeps people from committing the kinds of sins that take you there… so be it. Jesus said (so many words) to avoid Hell at all costs (“If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and cast it from you…”) Sounds pretty serious to me…

For sure… I have felt the presence of evil a lot in my relatively short life… and yet i feel uncomfortable talking to most people about such things… they tend to think you are a fanatic or something…

All i know is, i am not going to serve satan in any way (intentionally) since i don’t want to spend eternity with that #*&@%$!

Exactly!! :mad: I could have written this myself… I have rarely heard a bad homily but what good are all those wonderful homilies if they don’t speak of the most important thing (so to speak). I mean, Jesus died a horrible death… to save us from…??? 🤷

Gee - you are one lucky person to have a priest like this… He doesn’t make light of sin… I think the priests who are always trying to avoid Hell are, albeit indirectly and hopefull unintentionally - making light of sin and its consequences. If someone had told me the truth about Hell and Purgatory (which is “hell” that ends), i would have had a completely different life. At one time, there was so much of the devil in my life (via the lives of others as well as my own…) that i got very angry atGod (though it wasn’t his fault, of course) and could have stayed angry… I stayed faithful to God out of love, not fear, but i say: Whatever works…
He is the only priest I have ever known to have given a sermon on hell (besides Fr. Corapi). Besides them two I have never heard another priest speak about it. 🤷

NOW i am inspired to try to get cable so i can have something worthwhile to watch!! Of course, i will have to get a TV first :whacky: :hmmm:
Fr. Corapi though and that priest I mention always seem to speak about Hell or the Devil or at least mention one if not both of them every time I listen to them.

Its interesting how people who have been involved in serious sin (Fr. Carapi) and been around a lot of sin (others) seem to know more about Hell than those who haven’t (though i can’t say i have taken a poll or anything… Experience alone is my source of “insight”…)… Thanks for telling me about Fr. Carapi. I didn’t know he preached on Hell… must be a recent development because years ago, he came to the town i lived in and i don’t recall any mention of the subject… Hmmm… wonder what changed??

Actually about 3 weeks ago. My parish has an amazing older priest that pulls out all the stops almost every time he preaches. He is on a 4 week rotation.

He tackles all the hard topics. I also notice he often has a line waiting to thank him after mass.

😃 Yeah, i always figured people were more interested in the truth than sugar-coated half-truth and watered down truth…
 
Our priest mentions it once in a while in his homilies…regularly compared to many other parishes. We are blessed.🙂

Yes, it is that… but according to wwwSpiritLessons.com there are devils with, well, some spear like things… :eek: and then there is mention of the “torturers” in St. Matthew 18:23.

Oh how I wished we had more Fr corapi’s. Although his mission is extraordinary…it is apostolic preaching. If you have not a TV…he has CDs as well as audio tapes. Maybe the DVDs would work on your computer. His Spiritual Warfare talks are over the top. Although all of his works are very good…truly inspiritng. I have been blessed to see him 3 times at different conferences and I am from Canada. He always needed bodyguards.:eek:

Thank you for those sites. Is there any way you can transfer that info to the Spirituality Forum, “Most People Go to Hell”??? Some people there don’t seem to want to believe in Hell… or that many people go there… though Jesus saidthat few would make it (etc)…

Maybe because human beings don’t know much about REAL love… I mean, think about how mothers “love” their children by not disciplining them… not teaching them that if they continue to lie, steal or what have you, they will end up in jail?? Their little dears can do no wrong… but their little dears end up in prison, sometimes w/ lengthy sentences… They have the best of intentions but their children end up in “hell” here and possibly “there”…

So much for love… 😦
 
I believe God is “understanding” of people who do wrong but don’t realize they are doing wrong - like people who live in sin but really love each other and may have what htye think is a good reason for not getting legally married… It is the ones who know to do right and do wrong anyway who get the harder penalties… Still, sin involves a penalty regardless, just because it is sin - something against God, against our consciences… against our very selves (and others). I mean, if i think its OK to cut my finger off, I can think that is OK all i want… but it is still going to bleed and hurt and disfigure me… and obviously, lack of a finger will cause me problems in the future… It doesn’t really matter whether my father (on EArth and/or in Heaven) forgives me or not… I still will not have a finger…

Its like that one story @ wwwSpiritLessons.com where Jesus tells the preacher who is tormented by demons that it would have been better for him never to have (known? served?) Jesus than to have known Him and then turned away from Him (the Truth) like he did…

That’s a silly idea. “Hell” and “heaven” as usually portrayed by mission preachers are projections of primitive human fears and hopes.
 
During Lent my parish priest is typically pretty good, i have heard sermons on Hell, the Devil (he opened one homily about how the Devil decided the biggest trick he could pull on people was convincing the worlrd he didn’t exist, this led into the problems of moral relativism), and my favorite, what he called a ‘brush up’ on the seven deadly sins, what they are and how they are committed, and why they are bad.
