This is sad to see how some Catholics use social media to attack, insult others…

Yes, it is. In the case of Lizzie Answers, she’s a new convert and has experienced an onslaught of ugly criticism from traditionalists (many of whom I follow and often support). They pick at her about debatable issues that even lifelong Catholics are struggling with, like how to read Amoris Laetitia or whether the Divine Mercy devotion is acceptable or what modesty means in practice. It’s absolutely sickening. Catholic Twitter is a cesspool quite often.

Exactly what I was telling about! and got shot… Divide et impera my friends, divide et impera.
Very dangerous!

God has seemed to grant more private revelations to women than us men. St. Therese = amazing.

I didn’t realize she was still on you tube. I watched some of her early videos about her conversion and becoming Catholic.

Her voice gets on my nerves so I haven’t watched one
of her videos for close to a year.

She is still young, but seems passionate about her faith.

For this reason and many others I avoid SM (S&M?) like the plague it is.

Actually, I belong to anti-Social Media, but no one knows this.

Yeah, social media can really turn people nasty.

And it’s NOT just the Traditional Catholics. I’ve seen nasty/snarky tweets from all sides.

There is honestly something about social media that brings out the worst in people - perhaps it’s the fact that you can’t see/hear body language plus voice & facial expressions?

Social media is fine if you are simply communicating with a small (or even larger) group of friends, people whom you mostly know from real life or you might meet/ see in the future.

If you’re going to go on some platform, make a big public page and start putting up videos of yourself making speeches on hot button topics, you’re going to draw all kinds of problematic responses. If you then proceed to engage with such people by giving them attention (commenting back, making videos arguing about their comments etc) you’ll get even more of it. If your goal is to get public attention to your social media, congratulations, you succeeded. Most of us don’t need or want the aggravation, aren’t interested in being “influencers” or any of that gunk, and also understand that people who spend time every day hurling insults on social media have problems/ are not the norm.

While it’s nice that Lizzie is passionate about her faith, I’m always a little wary of somebody who is out on display like this especially at a young age. At what point does it stop being about a faith life and start being about attention and benefits for Lizzie?

Yeah it’s quite curious. I always thought that pre-social media internet (such as message boards and forums) was toxic because there was the element of anonymity. People said what they wanted because there were no repercussions.

Social media scuppered that theory since people are even more toxic despite their faces, their names and their locations being on public display. And the toxicity persists despite people being more cognizant that repercussions can arise (e.g. employers checking your social media).

I think one reason is that social media is possibly the most uninvolved form of human engagement: it is highly impersonal, there are no obligations, no reciprocity, people come and go as they please. People don’t seem to engage with others as if they were people with whom they wish for a deeper connection.

Well 8 seconds of the video was enough for me to turn off. Not my type of thing. Too loud and in your face. I can actually see how she might annoy people, although as far as the comments go, the alleged one about women (I say alleged, because I have not seen the video to know if she provides proof or just says that somebody said that) was definitely very uncalled for.

Mine too.

I think it is that way by design. There are some very interesting videos on this and how the format of social media is actually designed for people to be nasty and have arguments.

Never heard of LizzieAnswers until this thread.
Don’t expect I will ever watch one of her videos (I don’t have 20, 60, 90 minutes to watch YouTube – I got important cr@p to be watching on the TV)

I just don’t get this generation of randoms who pour out their opinions on social (so called) media? Any more than I got a previous generation – eg my father-in-law, who tried to get me involved in HAM radio. I don’t have anything so important to say that I need to say it to millions of people thousands of miles away who I’ve never met and likely never will?

(Heck, I even feel funny posting on CAF. So I’ll stop now)

“When radicals take social media over…”

So, what is Lizzie? What’s a radical?

If an adult woman paints themselves as a gum chewing 12yo girl bouncing on a bed talking about Church doctrine, does that mean that they aren’t a radical? I mean, she’s taking tweets and ascribing the worst motives to them.

I was sympathetic to her until I watched about 2 minutes of the video. Of course some people are going to hate, but why is she taking it seriously? Other criticisms seem legitimate, so she shouldn’t be acting as if she’s above criticism.

When I was in college back in 1996, a classmate predicted that the Internet was the “beast” that would usher in the anti-Christ.

Sometimes, I think back on that discussion and wonder if he just might have been 100% correct.

I didn’t know anything about her until today. Comments in social media can be hurtful and we should never say in internet what we would not say in person. On the other hand I find that most Catholic people famous in the Catholic social media (trads and less conservative alike) usually use a language, an attitude and a choice of topics that is bringing in the community division, extreme reactions and a lot of negative attention.
It seems they all forgot that they are all of Christ and belong to the same Catholic Church, instead each one of them is promoting his/her own agenda (pro or anti-Trump; pro or anti Pope Francis, pro or anti EF, pro or anti social issues or gun control etc).

Well…we shall see if her post simply laughing at the Rad Trads works…maybe. I’ve found that there is not much that seems to work. Scripture, church documents, and reasonable discussions don’t seem to work here on CAF.

Most of her comments where people reacted to her just seem to be amusing. I’m baffled why anybody would take offense at her writing down her sins their phone before going to confession. It’s not a terrible idea…

The one about being vegan because Adam and Eve were vegan before the fall is actually pretty funny!

Social media is annoying/dangerous and people like Lizzie are eyebrow raising. I’m a bit more concerned that her protestant followers are seeing a really ugly side of Catholics.

My daughter has been following her for years. I listened to some of her apologetics before she converted and she was really very good. Gifted even with a discerning spirit. I’m glad that she’s got a good handle on how to deal with this type!

20 posts.

How many fall into the “attack and insult” category?

I see 1, maybe 2, that are not critical of either Lizzie or social media. Not that there is anything wrong with that, just trying to help explain the perceived “nastiness.” It really is easy to just criticze.
