Just out of curiousity, what is y’alls prayer routine when satan attempts to tempt you? Ususally, I say an Our Father and a Hail Mary, but am curious if anybody has something special that they would like to share. Oh, and if you don’t mind, our parish (St. Philip) is undergoing a change in priests. If you could keep the parishiners and the priests who are changing roles in your prayers it would be greatly appreciated by me and by all of the priests and parishoners in the Diocease of Nashville.

When I’m tempted, usually all my energy is involved in withstanding the temptation. During such times, I keep my prayers very brief and to the point. I’ll say, “Jesus, mercy!” or “Jesus save me!” Such prayers keep your focus on God instead of the temptation. It’s also putting your faith in God and his grace to save us rather than in our own strength.

Pray hard and pray often! I like the Memorare to the Blessed Virgin, but depending on the circumstances I might just say something simple like the Glory Be, or just “God help me!” even.

And knowing the areas in which I am weakest, I pray plenty about them every day, whether I’m tempted or not.

“God come to my assistance. Lord, make haste to help me.”

I simply say, “Lord, help me stay clean.” It usually works. In the past, *nothing *worked, except guilt after-the-fact. Glad those days are long gone.👍

It depends on the temptation - bad thoughts or what?
  1. Saying, “The Name of Jesus be Praised” or “Blessed be the name of Jesus”.
  2. “Begone evil” - another
  3. The exorcism prayer said by St. Anthony of Padua: "Behold the Cross of the Lord. Begone ye enemy powers. The Lion of the Tribe of Juda, the Root of David has conquered. Allelujah, Allelujah. Amen.
  4. Sometimes, I just say, “God, make the evil go away.” Something as quick and simple as that.
  5. Making the Sign of the Cross.
    God bless you.

I personally say(to myself), “Get out of my head! Be gone Satan” and normally it works quite well. I think its all dependent on how much you believe in what you are saying/thinking.

The Our Father, Hail Mary’s, Glory be…, St. Michael prayer, Hail Holy Queen…, and the Memorare of St. Bernard.

I no longer view them as “temptations” (in the strict sense)… but more as “assaults”. When the devil assaults me… I respond with a BARRAGE of:

“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning… is now… and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.”

I say as many “Glory Be’s” as necessary. But the enemy, being a craven coward… usually flees quickly from a soul, giving praise to the Most High. Try it. It works. (I got the “idea” from Father John Corapi… of EWTN fame. Fr. Corapi uses the “Hail Mary” as his response to these assaults). Hope this helps. God bless.

I had a problem with this yesterday. Thank you for this forum! There is a rich arsenal of weapons against temptation in the spiritual treasury of the Catholic Church. I recently, learned a prayer that St. Anthony prayed " Behold the Cross of the Lord Depart Powers of Darkness. Jesus, the Lion of Judah, The Root of David has conquered. Alleleuiah!" The Hail Mary usually works. " I often recite " Jesus, I trust in you!" throughout the day. Sometimes, like yesterday, Our Lord wants us to humble ourselves and reach out to others and ask them to pray for us.

Paul, I’m so glad you offered this one! 🙂 This is a GREAT prayer, to say… when one is being assaulted by the enemy. God bless!

Thank you so much! All were helpful, I appreciate y’alls (name removed by moderator)ut.

Firstly I grab my Rosary, which I now have, and hope to always, in my pocket.

Just having it near me seems to chase away all but the most insistent of wickedness.

I then say, as many times as necessary, and a few more after,

‘Oh my Jesus, have mercy on us sinners. Save us from the fires of Hell; lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy’

Works for me anyway:shrug:

Quoted from Mr. Paul’s message,

“Sometimes, like yesterday, Our Lord wants us to humble ourselves and reach out to others and ask them to pray for us.”

Ah! Though isn’t it terrible? Often the enemy will try to trick us (well, when doesn’t he?) But I mean to say, he will give us 99% truth!

For instance, he whispered in my ear, that I must be so vain to go to God and pray for myself. That it would be selfish to ask others to pray for me when there’s such harm and hurt already in the world!

😃 I can still remember the terrible agony of my pride as I so wounded it when I finally resolved to ask for assistance. It was completly unlike the gradual death of the concience born by years of rationalization, I see now.

  1. Bless myself with Holy Water
  2. Pray the St. Michael Prayer
  3. Say, “Mary, take over”
  4. Unite the temptation to the Passion of Jesus and offer it up as a sacrifice.
