I don’t know if you guys have noticed this, and perhaps it’s just my anecdotal experiences, but from reading the break-up stories here and from other experiences, I notice that women are very adept at considering you as dead to them if their love/romance for you is gone. Like the song, she becomes “as cold as ice” when it comes to the man whose heart she has just broken. I hope I’m conveying the phenomenon I’m thinking of here.

How come women are so good at this?

There’s a point of no return with women in love/romance. Once she’s past that point, she will never love him again (not in a romantic way). I don’t know why that is, but it’s absolutely true.

Well, this should be an interesting conversation. Here’s hoping for charity, and in the interest of charity, I don’t think I’ll be posting a response :rotfl:

This, I feel, is a very sweeping generalization. I am sure that many women are not “good” at becoming “cold as ice” when their love for their significant other is gone. It is important to realize that the sample mentioned here is biased; the individuals who are posting these break -up stories are having a difficult time moving on, due to an acrimonious split from their ex, and thus, are writing to release frustration, seek advice, or ask for prayers. Individuals who have an amicable break-up are less-inclined to write these posts, and therefore, the sample is skewed. Correlation does not equal causation; just because it appears that there is a correlation between women who become “cold as ice” after a break-ups does not mean that all women (or even the majority of women) do this after splitting in a relationship.

No. It’s not. See above post.

Why is this a gendered thing? Couldn’t you replace “woman” with “man” and be just as right (or wrong)?

I actually don’t think it’s correct for either gender–the world is full of mismatched dating couples who break up, get back together, break up, get back together so many times that it makes their friends and families sick to see them get back together again.

Even when breaking up with a girlfriend or boyfriend is the very best thing to do (and it often is), it takes considerable will-power to stay broken up. Looking “cold as ice” is often just self-protection to keep a safe distance from a person that is objectively wrong for you but that you have a lot of chemistry and/or a physical relationship with.

It’s very destructive to keep talking and texting and hanging out with someone that you still have feelings for but that you know is wrong for you. In that case, the nuclear option is the safest–no phone calls, no texting, no social media, no hanging out, block everything, no nothing either forever or until the fires have safely burnt out.

That’s just good dating hygiene.

This reminds me of a recent cartoon which likens a woman who breaks off a romance and offers to “still be friends” with a person who kills your dog and graciously offers to allow you to keep the carcass as a keepsake.

According to some, however, you are better off there than the other way around:

Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned
Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned

William Congreve, *The Mourning Bride *(1697)

Contemporary artists echo this sentiment, particularly for the man who does not bother going through the motions of actually breaking up before “moving on”:

*…Right now, he’s probably dabbing on 3 dollars
Worth of that bathroom Polo
Oh and he don’t know

That I dug my key into the side
Of his pretty little souped-up 4 wheel drive
Carved my name into his leather seat
I took a Louisville slugger to both head lights
Slashed a hole in all 4 tires
And maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats

I might’ve saved a little trouble for the next girl
'Cause the next time that he cheats
Oh, you know it won’t be on me!
No, not on me

'Cause I dug my key into the side
Of his pretty little souped-up 4 wheel drive
Carved my name into his leather seat
I took a Louisville slugger to both head lights
Slashed a hole in all 4 tires
Maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats
Oh, maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats…*
from **Carrie Underwood **- Before He Cheats (2005)

Seriously, though, neither gender has cornered the market on the faults and ill-considered reactions to breaking up, whether they initiate the break-up or suffered from a break-up they didn’t want. (Not surprisingly, those who discover their love has been cheating on them take things to the greatest extremes…)

Couples sometimes go through bad break-ups and then wind up married in the end, anyway. You just never know…🤷

Well, a lot of times, men say that they came home, and she was gone, no notice whatsoever. However, if they would be honest with themselves, I think in the majority of cases, there were signs there was trouble, but this got ignored, sometimes months or years.

Some women say, repeatedly, what the problem is, ask for help, but the man will often say it’s not his problem. Sometimes, she will ask, even beg him to go to counseling. Again, that often doesn’t happen, either. Often, they hear things like, “It’s YOU! YOUR problem!” Okay, so she goes alone.

She may distance herself progressively more in almost predictable stages, if one knows what to look for.

She usually goes through the SAME stages of a breakup as the man, in many cases, just before he does. When she is warning him there’s trouble, and he’s going on, ignoring her, that’s when her love is starting to die.

She may not be able to confide in him, talk to him, feels uncared about, unloved, unappreciated, disrepected, in many cases.

She often will not get the emotional support she’s looking for, be at least tempted to look outside the relationship for what she would like to get within the relationship.

If men would only listen. I don’t know what it is about men. Women basically shout, and it often takes a wakeup call, like leaving him before he’ll realize there’s a problem. He will act like it’s a surprise.

In some cases, there will be no talking, intimacy. There will be fighting, disagreements, or intimacy only for sex’s sake, no love. Sometimes, the man is the only one getting pleasure there, a very one-sided, selfish act of “love”, not noticing his partner is often never satisfied, just going through the motions for him.

There can be a feeling that there will be this fighting, or not speaking, and then the man will come together, just want sex, or maybe not even that.

If the woman gives him sex, she can feel that he will interpret this to mean “All’s well”. So, some women try to give a stronger message, move into a separate bedroom. Sometimes, even this isn’t enough, and it takes moving out of the house.

It can practically take hitting the man over the head before he will admit something’s wrong, often blame the woman 100% for what wrong, not realizing that in the majority of cases, he often played at least a part.

To say the woman is 100% responsible for the breakup, and he is 0% responsible usually isn’t accurate. In most cases, it’s both. Sometimes, it is also the man that makes the woman’s life difficult for a bunch of reasons, but he may not want to see, or admit that.

It’s just often easier to blame the woman.

I think many, if not most, women would love to be in a loving relationship and marriage. However, after the marriage, it can be quite disappointing, becoming routine, drudgery, boring. The chase is often gone, zero romance. If there’s sex, that’s it, but no romance.

For a woman, romance can feel tantamount to love. It can help women get through all kinds of things, I suspect, from childbirth right on down.

Sometimes, women put up with such thankless, tedious, ugly, disgusting work, changing poopy, smelly diapers. They can be viewed as someone who doesn’t “work”, because it isn’t outside the home. Women can feel so unappreciated, put down.

It can be less than intellectually stimulating.

Sometimes, housework, cleaning toilets, kids fighting, not getting enough sleep and rest can be quite exhausting.

I think most women wish there would be a remnant of courtship after marriage, but generally, the “dating” all but stops not long after the rings are exchanged.

A lot of women more or less NEED romance to function, sexually. Otherwise, sex becomes just another bodily function. Sex for women, for example, is largely emotional and mental.

Men often miss the point, think women need bigger, but maybe she’d just like a man who touches her because he cares, not because he wants something from her, is trying to get somewhere.

If men could ever “get” this, they could probably actually have the women in their lives eating out of their hands instead of wanting to divorce them.

When you date, there are all these expressions of love…gifts, flowers, going out. It’s just disappointing when it ends is all, and it’s hard. There’s a longing for that stage when there was passion, romance, beauty, and love.

I agree with the part about the point of no return. Once it goes on for a certain length of time, even if he finally comes to his senses, says he wants to change, emotionally, it’s gone on too long…too many years, that the woman has long ago felt it necessary to move on emotionally, in order to survive.

So, she just makes this official, in a divorce, say, what was happening generally for a very long time.

One last thing…there are a lot of men deserve what they get. 😉

I guess it’s thought that the marriage ceremony is the climax to a party - dating - that’s been going on for several months/years. And in our culture, once you’ve reached climax, you’re done. Anything further’s a burden. And so the man treats the woman like a piece of furniture (obviously). And perhaps vice versa. Something owned, rather than something loved, since the “loving” has already reached its high watermark.

I guess they have no sense that the romance is supposed to only begin there. 😉 Marriage is the ticket to a new world, not the trophy on the mantlepiece from conquering said world.

Yes.

Some have compared marriage to being like a garden, that needs constant attention. A lot of people neglect the relationship, terribly, and are surprised when everything is dried up, dying and weeds everywhere!

There was an author that was writing about the stages of a breakup. I didn’t read the book, just a summary, think she gave 4 stages. If it’s what she’d call, say, “Stage 4”, she’s “had” it.

It’s very difficult to win someone back who this author classified as the emotional equivalent of “terminal”!

If a woman is to be won back, it needs to be before she’s just completely lost all faith, hope, trust, respect and all the rest…while there is still time, before it’s too late.

Women are the ones who initiate the divorce in the majority of cases. I think if men would listen to them, tend to the problems while they are still small, and not feeling so insurmountable, it would make all the difference.

Usually, if counseling is tried at all, it’s kept as some kind of last resort, instead of a first one. That should change. If men would agree to go when problems are small, I suspect at least some marriages and relationships could be saved by just doing this one thing.

Often, by the time a man is willing to go, the woman has already decided that it’s simply not worth it, that it’s too late, that the relationship is “dead”, and not possible to try to bring that ugly thing back from the grave!

Thanks ClearWater, that was a clear appraisal of this phenomenon, it helps me see how a woman might come to this point, and that she is not just some hussy trying to break hearts and take my wallet.

Of course I think that door can swing both ways, and the woman can become disappointing after marriage as well.

This is why I like to listen to country music like EasterJoy because I think it makes people into romantics.

There are all kinds in this world. Some women don’t make good marriage partners. If one got one of those, that’s awful.

Yeah, some turn really vindictive, and in those cases, that’s tragic.

I don’t know you or your situation, can’t say what’s going on.

I’m just saying how it can sometimes feel like from a woman’s slant, but even so, it’s different.

There are women who can be cruel. Although, I sometimes wonder if there are signs of that before marriage, as well, not sure.

Yeah…the rollers in the hair, letting oneself go… loss of libido.

😉

Nagging, arguing… negativity.

Both sides often simply stop trying after the wedding.

The same goes for some men. When their love has gone they try to ‘kill’ you & would prefer you didnt exist. You seem to have it in for women.
