What Protestants?

(I’d be more concerned about how Catholics will greet him)

Anti-Rome feeling is not so great in Britain really, any protests are more likely to be about the child abuse cases of the last few decades than anything strictly theological. Even so, my feeling is that people will be generally polite since Benedict has, of course, spoken out against what happened.

Im sure itll be about the same as usual. Most wont care and a few loud mouths will make fools of themselves.

Personally I just envy my European brothers and sister who get to witness this momentous event. God bless em all.

In Scotland, the event will be treated like a big Old Firm game… I’ll expect some violence.

That’s just wrong, sorry.

No, any protests for the most part will simply be atheists and Protestants hiding behind the sex abuse scandal to take another shot at Holy Mother Church.

I can see how living in Glasgow, you might think this. Glasgow is not representative of the rest of Britain.

My post is still valid though. The Holy Father will be visiting Scotland before he moves on down to England, and my post, even if it does just describe the situation in Scotland, should not be ignored.

Although Glasgow is not representive of Scotland, it just happens to be where there are large concentrations of the Loyal Orange Lodge who are hugely hostile to Catholiscism, there will be some protests just like last time around from some of the smaller Protestant church groups, but on the whole the bigots will be shouting loudly and proudly about our clergy being kiddy fiddlers, plus the protests from the gay groups from all over Scotland will congregate as near to the park as possible, looking foward to him coming, nice change from all the negative headlines

Seeing as the Pope’s visit in Scotland will be centred around Glasgow, for all intent and purposes, Glasgow is representive of Scotland.

But even then, to deny that anti-Roman feeling is found through the entire United Kingdom, from Dundee to London, is to bury ones head in the sand. I am not going to sugar coat it for fear of hurting some people’s sensitive feelings, but there is no love for the Pope and the Catholic Faith in the United Kingdom.

I am a sixty five year old Glasgow born Catholic, living in Canada. There is enormous respect for Catholicism in Scotland …some Orangemen (usually no clue about history ,or why they joined the org.))and hooligans mouth off but they never have anything really intelligent to say ,they don,t even protest when their own churches are being closed and turned into night clubs and shopping malls, but they love to get their photos on TV shouting ugly slogans. At the end of the day the Rangers Soccer stadium which is notoriously anti Catholic , it,s called Ibrox is being leased as a parking lot for the Popes visit and the stall holders and tourist booths owned by Protestants are all out there to make a profit , they just want to make money and they are not interested in the yobs trying to spoil it all ,everybody knows those kind end the day in the pubs picking fights and getting jailed, filling the hospitals and throwing up in the emergency rooms where they punch the staff and get taken away in straight jackets believe me I,ve seen them in action .As the saying goes they,ve only two brains , one,s on vacation and the others out looking for it

I think anti-catholicism has grown in the UK since the last papal visit. Not only that but this Pope probably represents a perfect “storm” of nearly everything the average Briton is brainwashed into hating. For one thing he’s German. You only have to look at the BBC coverage of the World Cup to see that anti-german comments are quite commonplace.
I hope catholics in the UK come out in force to back him up.
He’ll need it, and as Peter’s successor he is due that backing!

Believe me the Pope will have lots of support and protection in Scotland even from a lot of non catholics the Parishes I’,m familiar with have sold all the tickets and are very well organised but like any large event the yobs need a stage and this is as good as any ,just like the G8 and G20 summits ,any excuse to be a hooligan .so nice they,re in a free country where protests are allowed, but just wait till the cops on those big horses start doing the crowd control and they are experts at it! one thing you can,t do is charge a horse with police brutality looking forward to the show.

It’s not so much any organised resistance from Protestants that troubles me, the police will have them sorted out ready enough. It’s just general behaviour out in the “skeems” that has me worried.

All it takes is one lad walking home in a Celtic top and these animals will kick off.

Yes I know what y0u mean but that has always been a problem on both sides , they don,t need a special occasion ,and I would hope the Church organisers would emphasize , especially to the young people that caution is the name of the game and not to use the occasion to antagonize local non Catholics in the "skeems’by flaunting colours.Common sense and restraint will a big part of a successful visit

But special occasions are a big factor. Look at the Old Firm nights… increases in assaults, attempted murders and all too often murders. Generally it wont be that bad, though of course the die-hards wont need any excuse. But if such a thing as an Old Firm can get the passions going then what will a Papal Visit do? The Orangemen in their thousands regularly call for the blood of Catholics and the Pope alike.

And I also don’t think that the organisers of the event should “warn” Catholics against wearing their colours on the day. When 80,000 Orangemen can walk through the streets of Glasgow showing their colours, why should we as Catholics have to hide ours in our own neighbourhoods for fear?

Every year we have to put up with the drums and the flutes of the heretics who wish to celebrate their “glorious culture and history”. We Catholics get this one oppertunity to celebrate our faith and our culture, and sadly we will be given violence in answer to it.

Don,t let the Orange walk bother you they all end up in the pub drunk and look like fools ,and keep thinking good thoughts there will be some rabble rousers but when its over they,ll all be jealous because in hundreds of years they never annihilated us and we always come out looking good KEEP THE FAITH and your chin up ,its going to be wonderful you,ll see.
