Coming from a Protestant background when I’ve prayed only directly to God through the Name of Jesus, when do Catholics do that, and when do they ask Mary (or another saint) to pray for them instead?

if you pray and meditate on the mysteries of the rosary; you will understand how important prayer to Mary is; if you include the luminous mysteries, the rosary is a tour through the NT

i am sorry sorry protestants have missed ship’s movement on how important a spiritual relationship with Mary is

i wouldn’t change my devotion to Mary for the world

I think it’s more asking Mary to pray for us as well, instead of instead.
I’ve struggled with praying to Mary forever too but slowly I realized it’s just like asking my friends to pray for me and pray with me… but better. Because Mary is the perfect example of how to pray
When I’m not sure of what to say in prayer, when I find it difficult to pray, when I just need more prayer- any time I’m praying, Mary’s example leads me and helps me to focus on God more and keep him as the focus in my life.

pray the rosary; it takes about 20 minutes; it is a near perfect devotional prayer

get in the habit of the rosary; you will NEVER be sorry you did

You can do it anytime actually. There is a saint of the day web site that will tell you about saints. You may find one that you especially identify with for your personal cross or personality that matches yours. My sister always prays to St. Anthony when she loses things as he is the patron saint of lost items. She usually finds them.

Mary would be more powerful since she is the Mother of God and He has a hard time refusing her anything she asks for, so ask her to pray for your intentions.

Have nothing to add at the moment but will follow the thread because this is a good topic.

Where in the scriptures does it say we should pray to mary?
John 19:25-27:
Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
When Catholics use the expression “pray to Mary” or “pray to the saints,” we are using the word “pray” in a sense that used to be common in English but isn’t anymore, “pray” meaning “to ask.” So when we “pray to Mary,” we are actually asking her for her prayers, the same way we ask our friends to pray for us. We know we can do this because when He died, Jesus gave all of us His mother.

Also, when we choose to ask Mary or the other saints for prayers, that does not mean we are not also worshipping God at the same time. Since becoming Catholic, one of my favorite things that Catholics say about ourselves is that “we are not an ‘either/or’ but a ‘both/and’ people.” The rosary is a good example of this. Yes, many of the prayers are Marian, but in every “Hail Mary,” we ask Mary to “pray for us” and honor her because of her relationship to our Lord. The rosary also makes use of the “Our Father,” the prayer Jesus taught us to pray, and the “Glory Be,” which honors the entire Trinity. We also pray the Creed, our statement of what we believe, and the whole thing serves as a meditation on the life, divinity, and miracles of Jesus.

Catholics are very fond of multitasking. 😉

John 2
The Wedding at Cana
1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

This is why we pray for Mary’s intercession: She gets results!
She does not do anything for her own glory, though, everything she does is ordered towards Jesus.
She points us to him, and he has great love for her, so why wouldn’t we want that?

I heard it once explained like this: When you fall in love with someone, is it just you two isolated in your love, or do you want to know all of your love’s friends and family?
The love and relationship that you have with one person must extend out to everyone around you.
They become intimate friends with you, not on the same level as your lover, but it’s a significant relationship.
It helps you fall deeper in love, because you see aspects of your lover that you wouldn’t see if it was just you two.

Peace

👍

I, too feel sorrow for people who don’t understand.

I come from a long line of Marian Devotees and will continue to be one and have passed it along to my children and grandchildren.

I shudder to think where we’d all be without Our Blessed Mother.

I talk to Mary throughout the day and think of her at the foot of the cross. I pray to her throughout the and ask for her intercession with her Son. I love the Rosary.

Do you recall where Jesus was pressed into public ministry at the Wedding Feast of Cana? It was at His Mother’s behest.
Many people make the mistake of thinking that we Catholics circumvent the Lord.
No. We come to Our Lady as a confidant, just as a person would with their own Mother. As Mother of the Redeemer, she is also Mother to the world.
Rejoices with us, and she cries with us. She is our best friend, and close to her Divine Son. She can intercede for us.
THIS is what the Marian devotion is about. We look to her for an example of always doing God’s will, and always being deeply in love with Jesus, and attaining eternal life through quiet obedience and humility.
All wonderful reasons to give her the respect that she is due.
MARY.
What a gift to humanity! She, along with the angels, is our guide.
God bless you.

Those scriptures makes no reference to prayer…that verse at John 2 says that Mary turned to those serving at the feast and said simply: “Do whatever he tells you.” This shows that Mary saw that it was no longer her place to direct her son, rather, she and others should take direction from him . Even if we look at 1st century Christians like the apostle Peter in his writings he makes no mention of her at all in his inspired writings, the apostle Paul did not use her name in his inspired letters too but spoke of her only as “a woman.”

whether Mary is being prayed to, or asked to pray, neither practice has any biblical basis. The Bible nowhere instructs believers in Christ to pray to anyone other than God. The Bible nowhere encourages, or even mentions, believers asking individuals in heaven for their prayers. Is that just a man made ideal or on what basis does one base that belief on?

I’m not a Protestant but since they missed the ship, I’ll ask how would you help them get on that ship, how would you show one that from the Bible we are instructed to do that? I’m curious to learn and understand. Thanx

It’s hard to answer this question, because as Catholics, we believe that God continues to reveal himself to us throughout history.
There are writings that come after the bible that are just as canonical as the bible.
Also, the Church has the sole authority to interpret scripture, and this is how she has interpreted these passages. We are just relaying them to you.

Where in the scriptures does it say we should pray to mary?
Where in scripture does it say not to pray to Mary?
Where in scripture does it say that Sunday is the Lords day?
Where in scripture does it say that only the bible has authority?
Where in scripture does it say that there are other churches besides the one true church?
Where was the authority that gave the world the scriptures?

But as a Catholic do you believe that God speaks to us through his word the Bible? I know christians should believe that the Bible is inspired from God… Since the Bible is the most wide spread book in the world I could believe that God’s word should go out to everyone… But when you say there are writings that comes after the Bible, what makes you believe that it is inspired by God?.. I think the Bible was writing to show us how to serve and worship God, you telling me theres another book out there that I’ve never heard about?

The Didache, the writings of the Church Fathers and the saints. The Church assembled the books of the Bible, too, and has been writing encyclicals and information for the faithful since Biblical times. Of course, because it is only recently that larger portions of the population have been literate, that information was taught via liturgy, homilies, even statues and images.

Where in the Bible does it say the Bible is the *only *source of information on how to live a Godly life?

2 Tim. 3:16, 17: “All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.”
The book of Revelation also cautions against adding anything to the inspired record: “If anyone makes an addition to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this scroll.”—Revelation 22:18.

Or what would you say those verses mean? The book of Revelation also says that new scrolls will be opened but from that verse it shows that the time for it to be opened hasn’t arrived yet that’s at Revelation 20:12

So again I ask how do one know that the books you got are from God if that’s what the Bible says…

There is a difference between Inspiration and Revelation.
We as Catholics hold that Inspiration indeed ended with the Apostolic age.
But afterwards, the truth of the stripture continued to be Revealed to the Church.
She did not ‘add’ anything to the Bible.
My use of the word ‘canonical’ was incorrect.
Instead, the Church interprets the meaning of the bible, unfolding it, revealing the true meaning behind the passages.

I’m sure you have a response for this, but I’ll point you to it anyway 🙂
2 Thessalonians 2:14 It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.
