Yes, it’s misleading to think of it as a “place.” I’ve always thought of it as a state of existence. I believe that in the distant past, when most people were uneducated, it might have been useful to teach about hell as a bad place somewhere that you may go to. People could understand that better.

It’s not a ‘place’ now, so to speak, because its inhabitants are only souls, and do not have bodies. In the eschaton, though, when we all have our glorified (i.e., eternal) bodies, the damned will be in a ‘place’ (since it is physicality that leads to ‘place-ness’).

When the beggar, Lazarus & the rich man died Jesus said Lazarus went to the bosom of Abraham & the rich man went to a PLACE of torment…not a state of mind. Luke 16: 22-30 . Rev. 20: 14&15 “anyone not in the book of life, was thrown into the lake of fire.” Ouch!

So the people who will and have gone to hell will not have a body? I understand the ones who go to heaven will have a glorified body after the last Judgement but what of the ones who will go to hell?
Have there been any apparitions of saints? If not, could this be because they do not have their glorified bodies as of yet?
When the children of Fatima were shown hell, they saw souls suffering desperately - how could they distinguish them if they do not have a body? If hell is not a place as some believe, why were the children of Fatima shown hell?

Ouch, indeed! Well, just my own opinion, but I do not take the words of that passage (and many others) as literal. It’s a good analogy, though, to demonstrate the horrors of Hell to the people of those days.When the beggar, Lazarus & the rich man died Jesus said Lazarus went to the bosom of Abraham & the rich man went to a PLACE of torment…not a state of mind. So is it a good analogy that Jesus fed 5000, walked on water, opened the eyes of the blind man? What about Jesus rising from the dead…please don’t spread error here that will influence the poorly informed.

The bible very clearly says Hell was created **specifically **for Satan and the other fallen angels…likely ‘created’ right after the fall imo.

Well, its likely they were shown something they could understand, if they were shown the real thing, they probably would not have known what they were even seeing.
Sort of in the same way, we teach kids things by showing them things they can understand on their level, giving them the ability to grasp the concept.

In the context of that story, did Lazarus have a body (or was it buried in the ground)? Did Abraham have a body (or was it buried in the ground)? If they had no physical extension, then they were not able to ‘be’ in a place. The fact that Jesus didn’t turn it into a metaphysical philosophical discourse says more about His audience than about the truth of the matter (which we, theologizing on it now, are able to do in a way that His audience at the time was not).
The just souls who were waiting for Jesus could not be in a ‘place’; they just existed.
Just because one discourse is allegorical (that is, ‘representative’), it does not mean that it is not True. Just because one discourse is allegorical, it does not mean that all discourses are allegorical.

All will have glorified bodies, regardless of their eternal destiny.
They were shown a vision. The vision depicted the truth in a way that they could comprehend.
It will be a ‘place’ in eternity (that is, for anyone condemned to hell, they will be ‘there’ with their glorified bodies for eternity). It is not a ‘place’ in which there are souls now.
Umm… it was a ‘vision’. Without seeing (a visual representation of) something, how can there be a ‘vision’?
In the beginning God Created heaven and the earth. Quickly he was faced
with a class action suit for failure to file an environmental impact
statement. He was granted a temporary permit for the project, but was
stymied with the Cease and Desist order for the earthly part. Appearing
at the hearing, God was asked why he began his earthly project in the
first place. He replied that he just liked to be creative.
Then God said, “Let there be light.” Officials immediately demanded to
know how the light would be made. Would there be strip mining? What
about thermal pollution? God explained that the light would come from a
huge ball of fire. God was granted provisional permission to make light,
assuming that no smoke would result from the ball of fire, that he would
obtain a building permit, and (to conserve energy) would have the light
out half the time. God agreed and said he would call the light “Day” and
the darkness “Night.” Officials replied that they were not interested in
semantics.
God said, “Let the earth bring forth green herb and such as many seed.”
The EPA agreed so long as native seed was used. Then God said, “Let
waters bring forth creeping creatures having life; and the fowl that may
fly over the earth.” Officials pointed out this would require approval
from the Department of Game coordinated with the Heavenly Wildlife
Federation and the Audubongelic Society.
Everything was OK until God said he wanted to complete the project in six days.
Officials informed him it would take at least 200 days to review the application
and the environmental impact statement. After that there would be a public hearing.
Then there would be 10-12 months before…
At this point God created Hell.

Bodies after death perhaps have an ethereal body feeling from their simple souls, which would mean they could be in place
