This graph shows the timeline of the erection of confederate monuments from the time of the Civil War to the present. It is interesting to note that relatively few monuments were erected in the 30 years following the Civil War, which one might expect if their purpose was to “preserve history.” The biggest push for confederate statues happens to coincide nicely with the peak of the Jim Crow era. Another peak occurred right during the Civil Rights movement.
Coincidence? I think not.
A more reasonable explanation for the timing of these monuments is that they were erected at times of racial tension by those in power who wanted to maintain that power by glorifying the men who fought for that cause.
