That’s *ROMAN *CATHOLIC to you!And triumphalism is rampant here. It reminds me of the pharisee in the parable, who prayed,“Lord, I thank you that I am not like this publican!” Lots of people on this site sound like,“Lord, I thank you that I am not as this Protestant here. I’m a CATHOLIC!”
I’m just kidding there. :whacky:
I have many Protestant friends, and they are very friendly and what I would consider “Christian” in behavior. However, I have trouble with certain beliefs like Once Saved Always Saved (baptist, anabaptist, fundamentalists, etc.), imputed righteousness (rather than an actual rigtheousness), faith alone in justification (separate from love and charity), etc.
My sister and mom are both Protestants (one is e-free and the other is Lutheran). And sometimes I get sick and frustrated when they blame the Church for sex abuse scandals, not allowing contraception, being too ceremonial, not reaching out to the youth enough, etc.
So, I suppose that I really want the spirit and beliefs of Protestantism to go away, but the Protestants to become historical Christians. Ideally I’d like them to become Catholics, but if they decide to become Orthodox, Copts or Assyrians–that is fine, too.
The one thing that really gets me is that many of my Protestant friends say that I’m Catholic but not Christian because I haven’t really personally accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior. If I did, they say, I would no longer be Catholic. I just can’t stand this, especially in light of the early Church, which is more Catholic than Protestant in its beliefs.
I’m really interested: why do intelligent evangelical Christians claim that Catholics have historically departed from the truth faith, but at the same time, these evangelical Christians can’t show their Protestant theology in the works of the early Church? Why do they blame Purgatory and the Immaculate Conception as papal inventions, when at the same time sola fide, sola scriptura and “OSAS” were not present in the early Church? It blows my mind, and I don’t think I’ll ever understand it.
