Ok, so I get it. Recent archaelogical stuff shows that the patriarchal stories have a bit more jist to it then previously thought (there was some akkadian cuniform tablets found which contain mention customs consistent with those in genesis, and sodom and gomorrah are mentioned and whatnot), and this was supposedly back in 2000 BC or wahtever.

My question is, when were Adam and Eve supposed to have lived? Were Adam and Eve the first HOMO SAPIENS, or what? I mean I think we’ve established that Homo Sapiens have been around for 120,000 years or so. So when did Adam and Eve live? Any theories?

They lived when God created them.

For more precise estimates, look to scientists.

I dunno… I’m just saying… The patriarchs and what not is all fine and all and then adam and eve… I mean… I dunno. It would make more sense if they said “1,000 generatiosn” lived after adam and eve or something.

I heard from Fr. Benedict Groeschel ,on ewtn. If I can remember it correctly. There have been humans on the earth for a very long time, even millions of years. Adam and Eve are the result of God breathing a soul into them.

That hypothesis gets my vote.

Does it matter? All thats matters is that the first parents are Adam and Eve. All of humanity comes from them. be it 6000 years, 10000 years, or 100,000,000 years ago. The book of Genesis is true in what happened, there is room for debate on the time line of events.

Official Church teaching says that the human soul was specially created by God. So at whatever point in human evolution Adam and Eve came at, they were the first humans with souls.

Just know that there is no official Catholic stance on when Adam and Eve lived, so it’s totally up for debate.

God bless,

We all know that an animal can’t become Catholic, or know of Christ, because it lacks the type of consciousness we, as humans, have. Correct?

So a proto-human “animal” could certainly have been around for thousands of years without conflicting with what is meant in Genesis regarding God creating “man”, ie. a self-conscious, self-aware, self-reflective (in His image) human.

Thus it isn’t relevent to Adam and Eve that proto-human animals may have lived tens of thousands of years ago. Genesis is about the moment when God created “humans” by breathing the soul and Image of God - that consciousness - into that animal.

Thus evolution/archeology speak of the history of the form but do not, and can not, speak of the history of the soul/mind/consciousness.

The Bible, however, can and does.

At least that’s how it seems to me. Genesis is the creative moment when that evolutionary animal became human by the addition of the self-conscious soul. Adam and Eve are those first two true humans, and science agrees we all descend from a singular womb. Secularly, it would be the “bone” moment in Kubrick’s 2001. A moment before we are animals, the moment after … the journey has begun.

Knowing Christ is not dependent upon having a human consciousness. A dog knows his master; thus, a dog can know Christ, in his own unique canine way.

Debate has little value if it is not based on Church teaching. Eve was created by God from Adam’s side. The Bible mentions no animals as ancestors of humans.

The Bible mentions no animals as ancestors of humans.
Of course, but what’s a human? God making humankind by creating the union of body and soul doesn’t argue with evolution, because the precursor animals are not in any way “human.”

If the first human is the first conscious, soul-infused creation, why deny animals such as Homo-erectus, Homo habilis, and so on?

Denying fossils doesn’t exactly attract great thinkers to the Church any more.
Neither does accepting them doesn’t deny Creation.

And for the other poster, a dog can know and even have Buddha-nature, but can he possess the free will and power of reason that leads to responsibility to acknowledge God?

What Jesus asked of us is quite different from what Buddha taught us to do, even if the Noble path is essentially Christian, and the precepts essentially Mosaic.

I don’t see any credibility in the idea that God picked out two semi-humans in a group, dropped in souls, and they became human. Divinely revealed truth must be brought into consideration when talking about the ontological leap to man. Science can only see a part of the whole picture.

My apologies, as I’ve miscommunicated here.

My point is not that Adam and Eve were two semi-humans made human. I actually meant more the opposite, that the existence of proto or “semi” humans does not speak against Adam and Eve being Created; the first human man and woman.

The very existence of the soul, of self-conscious perception, God-given, defines them as unique and the first of their kind. This can be in harmony with a world that has fossils of proto-humans in that those fossils aren’t of soon-to-be-humans lacking souls, but rather separate before-human animals.

In lessor words, making Man from existing “stuff” is what is being said regarding making Man from the clay of the earth, or from dust, no?

I see such dust as being the “stuff” of the earth, the existing matter at that moment, which to me leads to no direct contradication with the fossil record.

I don’t mean to suggest that proto-humans evolved into Adam and Eve, and further am not asserting my view here is in any way Catholic.

Pope Benedict has stated that it is not possible to verify this. Based on the Bible, Adam and Eve lived circa 10,000 years ago.
