Alright, so I’m very unsure about this since lot of family members started dating and different ages. My dad says I can start dating when I’m 16 (15 right now really close) and my mom says no but doesn’t specify at what age, not sure who to listen to since you’re suppose to honor your father and mother. Also this is confusing to me because my aunt’s engaged to my uncle’s close friend and they’ve been together for 10 yrs and barley got engaged. (been together since 15) Then my mom on the other hand started dating my dad when she was out of high school (18), like I said this is confusing to me.

Also once I can I’m not sure about how to get a catholic girlfriend. I go to mass every weekend and I go to confirmation class once a week and help out the children’s quior once a week, this seems like you won’t be able to find a girl in that amount of time. I don’t go to high school because I’m home schooled but I take all my classes at my community college. (No one my age there) However I stopped going to school in 8th grade (end of middle school) so I know some girls in confirmation class… So I’m pretty stumped about that

Huge thanks and god bless!

The key is maturity, and that is not measured in years.

First, are you ready to be married? If not, why date? For fun? Then go out in groups, but not on one-on-one dates. There is MUCH risk in dating and little to be gained that is of value when you are young.

And btw, I’m a dad, and my daughter is 19 now. She did the group thing until she was 18.

Here is the order of life:

Graduate from high school.
Go to college (if you can and it makes sense).
Get a good job.
Get married.
Have kids.

Don’t try to do any of those steps out of order. 👍

First, always remember that your number one job now is education. Rather than thinking of dating, having a girlfriend, etc., think of developing social skills and making friends. Just because some others your age do this doesn’t make it a good idea. Certainly, do not compare yourself to married people. There will be plenty of time for that later. Look for opportunities to mix with studious kids your own age. Athletics, hobby groups?

There’s been a lot of good advice upthread. I suspect that at the moment, you just aren’t exposed to enough people for enough time to have enough in-real-life friends, let alone friends with enough girls to tell whether a particular girl is treating you like garbage and you could do better.

Some ideas:
  1. Develop your social life and make friends with both sexes. If you don’t get together outside of class times, you’re not friends yet. Same sex friendships are actually a very fruitful area for learning to be a good boyfriend and husband later on. Through friendship, we can learn the sort of give and take that are essential for a happy future married life.
  2. Figure out how to be friendly and friends with girls, too. Learn to tell the difference between girls’ personalities. (Hint: blonde and brunette don’t count as personalities.)
  3. Do what everybody else said.
  4. Develop your interests (ideally ones that at least some girls are interested in) and spend more time out of the house meeting people who share your interests.
  5. Work on making yourself a good prospect. Dress attractively, practice good hygiene, be physically active, and work on developing your career and income.
  6. Do a personal finance class when you can. Down the road, it will be important to find a woman who shares a financial plan with you. Save (but have fun, too!).
  7. Don’t worry too much about the actual girlfriend until you are 18-20. You’ll need different advice then–there are a lot of other threads on CAF on the subject, so look around.
Good luck!

Around five o’clock if dinner is involved, six for a movie, but be back home by ten! :tsktsk:

These two can be switched, if you can’t afford the tuition or the debt load from a loan. Then you can add another step: Get a BETTER job. 😃

You can also substitute the last three with “enter holy orders”. I hear it’s a very GOOD job.

you need to focus on schooling and not trying to find a girlfriend. Likewise, the other focus for you is just to be friendly with the opposite sex. Focus on being a friend instead of having a girlfriend. Girlfriend/boyfriend grow out of a basic old fashioned platonic friendships with the opposite sex. That should be your focus instead of “having” a girlfriend. It probably is confusing because your parents are not on the same page. No parent should set some magical age where they suddenly allow their teenagers to “date” or have girlfriend/boyfriends. Dating implies that you have money and ability to go out. At age 15-16, I highly doubt that.

Your mother is worried that if you date young that, due to hormones and all the rest, that it could get out of hand. You could end up a father before you’re ready, one thing.

I remember when I was quite young, wanting to date, and going with my mother to pick out a card for him for Valentine’s Day. I picked out a romantic one, and my mother told me to put that back and pick out one that said, “friends”. lol

I’m not sure about the age, either, but she was trying to delay that stage as long as possible, because I was very young, and it was WAY too soon to be thinking about dating, which can lead to marriage. I wasn’t ready for marriage.

At the time, I admit I was really disappointed that she wouldn’t let me date young when other parents were allowing their kids to do that.

We had a girl in one of my classes who was pregnant by age 12 y.o.!

Even when we are legally old enough to date, we generally don’t have the maturity for a serious relationship, in most cases, but will date, anyway.

At your age, especially, and as a male, your hormones are about at their maximum. If you were alone with a girl right now, what could we expect? In olden times, they were wiser, didn’t have everything coed where people were so exposed to temptations.

When someone was of age to date…not sure what age that would have been…probably 18 y.o., but not sure, they’d put the couple with a chaperone who would make sure things didn’t go too far. Well, they knew that, when one is young, their judgement is impaired by hormones, so they didn’t expect teens to be able to handle it all by themselves.

Now, teens are expected to be able to be in coed environments, date when they don’t have chaperones, and have the media and everyone else saying that premarital sex is okay. Schools hand out condoms and more or less tell people to “go ahead”.

This will be hard, because I know you want to be with a girl right now. It’s only natural and normal. My parents also got married, I think, quite young, but equally, those were different times. In those times, some people got married at age 17 or 18, but now, it’s different. Men need to pretty much get an education, first, before he can support a wife and family, so everything has been greatly delayed, sorry to say.

A lot of men wait till their twenties or thirties to marry to get a good education, mature a bit, first, because when we’re young, part of our brain (cerebral cortex) which controls judgement still is NOT developed. It’s not our fault, just is the way it is.

This is the same part of the brain that is affected by alcohol, right away, and partly why alcoholics behave so crazy.

Think it was Aristotle that said he had noticed that the youth behaved like they were in a constant state that resembled drunkeness, and with what we know about brain chemistry, he was right!

When I was your age, and even older, I did some pretty crazy things when I was in love that I would never dream of doing now.

In some folks, the cerebral cortex isn’t completely developed till age 35 y.o.!

The last thing you will want to do, due to the hormones, will be to just be friends, but that’s what I believe you need to do. I’m sorry it’s so hard for ya’ all. I feel for you. You want love in the worst way and will need to wait, what will seem to you to be an eternity!

There will be time, though, so don’t be in a hurry. I know you can think time will run out for you, but I doubt it. Men now, are in short supply, and they are in demand. I don’t believe you will have any trouble finding someone, just all in due time.

Good luck! 👍

I also believe you don’t need to “rush” to date. I went to a high school prom at 18 with a male friend that I had classes with. It was so fun! We played ping pong, talked, danced while others were “nervous” with their dates or thought they were supposed to be “kissing” or doing some other things. We didn’t have to worry about this and that because we both knew we were friends.

You are 15 now and it is a good time to focus on your study/education and it sounds like you are doing very well! Good job and God bless you!!!

Well my plan was in this order, but I’m still figuring things out.

Graduate from high school.
Get a part time job (during High School).
Go to the service (very questionable right now still talking to my parents).
Go to college (I’m already in college technically but transfer to a university).
Get a good job with my degree.
Get married.
Have kids.

  1. I totally agree with
  2. I’ll have to start trying to do that with old classmates that I know
  3. I have to read and think about everything a bit more and make a path from there.
  4. I don’t like to spend time outside my house because from there on I think my parents become annoying because they get nosey and to me it seems like it crosses the line.
  5. I’ll have to start doing that as soon as I can
  6. Not sure when I can do that, but I think that I need to wait on that a bit more
  7. I’ll do some more research around this forum

Yes I can agree that I don’t have the ability to go out without my parents freaking out, but with my current plan I’ll have my own car at 16 and a half and I’ll be paying for everything except insurance (more independent). Also for money I plan to get a job as soon as I turn 16 so I’ll have some money left over after paying different thinks and saving…

“If you were alone with a girl right now, what could we expect?” I would think it’d be very weird and I’d try to go some were else.

“In olden times, they were wiser, didn’t have everything coed where people were so exposed to temptations.” Does that mean it’s just getting worse and will continue to get worse?

“Think it was Aristotle that said he had noticed that the youth behaved like they were in a constant state that resembled drunkeness, and with what we know about brain chemistry, he was right!” I think he put that in good words to clear things up on what’s going on.

The problem with having one’s own car at age 16 y.o. is that all the money goes into the car. Insurance is sky high for 16 y.o. males.

Also, what does one normally need a car for at that age?

It’s also generally a temptation to go parking.

The money you will get working will go toward your car, gas, repairs, etc., etc., etc.

My parents used to say they didn’t agree with the idea of a 16 y.o. having his own vehicle, that it was asking for trouble. I know they wouldn’t let us till we were older and really had a legitimate need…work, college, etc.

It’s hard to find good men, and it’s hard to find good women. It’s even harder to find good Catholic women, for example. I agree.

I’m having difficulty pinning down an actual age, would like to ask my mother her opinion on that!

lol

Well I’d imagine having a girlfriend would be just having fun hanging out and making memories, but now that I think about it that’s what I do with my friends. However I don’t have an female friends that I hang out with.

Well I’ve done all the math for the car and what I’d be spending, saving… Plus my parents said they’ll help me but to be honest I hate take money from them. Well I got a estimate from my uncle (sells different insurance including car) and he said I can get liability for $200/mo for liability on the car I want. I want to get a 2002 mustang gt, which is a gas guzzling machine but my family is telling me to work for something I want or else I won’t want to work at all. From asking friends and family I got a estimate of a part time job of working min. 20hrs/week. So after all my calculations that I went over with my parents I’ll have $100 saved for w/e breaks, $200 to save towards my car, and $250 for gas. Plus I’ll have enough for saving 10% of my paycheck for another big purchase in life, and still be able to spend 10% of my paycheck for things I don’t need… (don’t want to make you board) I need a car since I live 10 miles away from school I’ll have to use one of my parents cars which will leave no car for my mom to use. I’d be driving to school(only go 2 times a week), work, church(3-4 times a week), and maybe to the store.

Yea, I’m not really sure about age either because everyone I know that is married all have different age differences.

Gah.

I definitely encourage you to be driving and have a car by the time you hit 18, but $200 a month just for liability is absolutely brutal. Think how many hours a month you’d have to work just to cover the insurance, even if you weren’t driving the thing at all…Do what you can to get the numbers down.

By the way, here’s a book rec: Dave Ramsey and his daughter Rachel Cruz’s “Smart Money, Smart Kids.” It’s more aimed at the parent than the kids, but I think you’ll pick up a few pointers. You may be able to find it at the library or via interlibrary loan.

I think 10% of paycheck going to major savings and 10% going for fun is not enough at your age. I think that both the fun and the major savings should be higher. Also, there should be some charitable giving in there. But it’s good that you’re doing the preliminary numbers.

Yea, giving 10% to something that has to do with church. I’ve been going by these numbers for half a year and I’ve been fine. I got those numbers from my father because it’s worked for him, sure it can be adjusted but I’m probably just going to spend it on mods to my car since I wouldn’t have much to spend it on…

I just hate to see your hypothetical future car eat your life like that.

We have three kids, two paid-for cars (a 2004 Ford Taurus and a 2011 Kia Sedona) and we spend $48 a month for insurance total, about $180-200 for gas, and budget around $80 every month for future repairs (although that isn’t always quite enough). So, about $330 a month in transportation costs for two cars? When we start saving for our next vehicle, we’ll start saving probably an additional $200 a month.

It’s true that we have a lot of other expenses for the family, but I read your proposed car budget and it’s just painful to even think about. Even if it’s 100% paid for, it’s going to own you.

(And by the way, I really recommend doing a repair fund for your future car. $80 a month is a good number, although you may need more depending what you buy.)
