Where are all the large Catholic families?

I think open to life can mean an acceptance of any children God gives us. For example, thinking you want 2 children, but should you become pregnant with a 3rd, being more than happy to nurture and love that child too.

If you believe what you wrote then you agree with me on the primary and secondary ends of marraige as stated by Pope St. Pius XI, correct? If you do not then you support a heremenuitic of rupture with past Catholic teaching, if though you agree then Humane Vitae, when concerning sexual mores for Catholics is just a long winded restatement of previous Catholic teaching.

What you want to do is divorce the previous teaching of the Church with the current to allow for a use of NFP that was never supported nor is currently supported by those documents.

Do you see now why even prelates in the Church, who do not study their history or have an agenda, issue teachings that are in rupture or seemingly in rupture with the past. It is not until someone points out the potential theological errors in their teaching that they come out and try to be in union with the previous teachings of the Church.
I think that the ends of marriage are equal, but about the marital act, these ends has to be cumulative (unitive and procreative). I am okay with Humanae Vitae in the conclussions and in the motivations.

Today, the catholic church says that both of them are necessary (cumulative conditions).

In Humanae Vitae, the marital act has to be unitive and procreative. Are you okay? There is the same level, no hierarchy.

The same thing in:

The Catechism of the Council of Trent:
But why marriage was instituted is a subject which demands exposition The first reason of its institution is because nature instinctively tends to such a union ; and under the vicissitudes of life and the infirmities of old age, this union is a source of mutual assistance and support. Another is the desire of family, not so much, however, with a view to leave after us heirs to inherit our property and fortune, as to bring up children in the true faith and in the service of God.
and
The Catechism of Saint Pius X:
What is the sacrament of Matrimony?
A. Matrimony is a sacrament, instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ, which creates a holy and indissoluble union between a man and woman, and gives them grace to love one another holily and to bring up their children as Christians.

Generally speaking in the catholic theology, when a couple practices the marital act, he is not in the moral obligation to want, to will, to desire and to make a baby. Are you okay with this statement?

Do you think really that the teaching of catholic church on responsible procreation and NFP was and is, per se, only objectively contextual???
There is the same level, no hierarchy.

This is not true and is an error in modern thinking. People think that documents that come from the Vatican are like US legal code in that the new code replaces the old. Teaching in the Church is revealed truth and is guaranteed when stated ex cathedra (you will see statements like “We declare, define, say…”). Humane Vitae just chose to not restate the primary and secondary ends of marraige. It did not say “We change the ends of marraige to be co-equal and one is not subbordinate to the other.”

It would be like saying how to drive a car. A simple statement such as “Get in the car and drive to the store” because it did not say you had to wear a seatbelt now means seatbelts are not required. See the error in thinking that because the document did not re-state what was previously said it now means the requirement has changed.

That is what I mean when I say that when pressed modern prelates will admit that modern documents must be read through the lens of previous teachings. If we do not do this then there is no revealed truth and they are just making it up as they go along, changing core teachings of faith to match with the whims of modern society.

This is what bread the oath against modernism that the modern Church did away with.

Generally speaking in the catholic theology, when a couple practices the marital act, he is not in the moral obligation to want, to will, to desire and to make a baby. Are you okay with this statement?

Correct. That is perfectly fine so long as he does not actively work to thwart the primary end of marraige he is under no requirement to DESIRE it. See the difference? I can desire to have sex with my spouse so long as that desire is not coupled with trying to avoid having a child. If I choose not to have sex with my spouse or use some other method to prevent having a child then I am actively trying to thwart having a child.

If a couple chooses to not have sex for a period of time, they are free to do that. What becomes a problem is if one spouse wants to have sex with the other during a time when there may be a higher potential to conceive a child and the other spouse rejects them, then that would be wrong. This obviously does not apply when one spouse is sick, or has other good reasons to not be having sexual relations.

NFP, when practiced to avoid having children but still have sexual relations, is done with a contraceptive mentality. Saying that well we can still have a child outside of the fertile time, that may be true, but by actively avoiding a child the possibility of one spouse feeling rejected, etc. is higher.

Mutual agreement on when to have sex is one thing. Making a schedule on when to have sex in order to avoid the primary end of marraige would be a lack of trust in God’s plan for your family. The semantics come in when other people try to determine what is a grave reason and that is the whole dance with this topic.

Grave reason for MOST people is not money, etc. It is health, mental stability, etc. Most of the greatest saints in history were born into abject poverty. Our Lord was born in a cave with animals. Did Mary hold up the Angel and say “They will be done, but I need a house, college fund, good education, etc. before I say yes unless God wants to push the issue”

Think about it.

But didn’t God push the issue when Mary became pregnant with Jesus? She was a Pregnant Virgin. I see this as being no different than a surprise pregnancy where the couple then says, ok, so be it, let’s welcome this new life that God has blessed us with.

Making sure the children that one already has are provided for is a moral reason to not just continue procreating. Mental stability is also very arguable. Some people may not mentally do well with an extremely large family. Their effectiveness as parents may dwindle with more children. Why do you think there is the joke from youngest children that the older children couldn’t do anything, but they got away with partying and everything else because mom and dad just didn’t care anymore/were too tired to notice. It may not be every couples’ calling to have 8 children.

NFP when practiced with a contraceptive mentality, i.e. I want sex, but no children and am trying hard for THAT end, is NOT being open to life.

Why not just take a natural contraceptive like Queen Ann’s Lace. It is just food. If God wants you to have a child, you will.

God allows people to make choices here on earth. He does not impose his will on people. That is why we have free will. We can choose to be open to what his will is or we can choose to not be as open. When we say to God, I don’t want another child and I am going to actively work to avoid any more more unless you force one on me, what does that say to God? That we love him?

Pardon, I so sorry, but are you in favor of the intellectual approaches called theoretical providentialism?

Using our sexual powers for just pleasure is not what God made them for. He made sex pleasureable so that we would have an incentive to have more children and enjoy the making of said child. Had God intended sex to be just for pleasure he would have created a seperate organ in our body that would give us the same amount of pleasure without the possibility of having a child.
Sorry again , but what is the function of sexual pleasure between husband and wife? Are you against the concept of physical love or sexual love in the marriage?

I’m just gonna say, I think you are seriously misreading this passage
  • Our mouth proclaims anew: **any use whatsoever of matrimony exercised in such a way that the act is deliberately frustrated in its natural power to generate life is an offense against the law of God and of nature, and those who indulge in such are branded with the guilt of a grave sin.” ***
This is saying the exact same thing that Humanae Vitae says, don’t take an otherwise fertile act of sex and render it infertile. It is not saying that having relations while avoiding children is sinful, which is how you seem to be interpreting it. 🤷

God did not force Mary. He sent an angel to ask her if she was willing to accept God’s will for her. He did not just show up in her womb or force himself in.

In a special way each women is called with this same question: “Will you accept God’s will for you.”

Meaning without qualifications.

Of course not. What I am saying is you can not divorce the requirement of being open to life in order to have only the sexual pleasure. That is what a contraceptive mentality WANTS to have. The sexual pleasure without the “burden” of the possibility of having a child that that love is supposed to be geared towards. It turns the love of spouse thru sexual relations into an end unto itself instead of the primary purpose for which God intended it.

I believe your thinking is slightly misconstrued. A woman who will accept any child she becomes pregnant with is accepting God’s will for her. Financial reasons are stated as being a valid NFP use. It is irresponsible to continue to have children that you can’t properly provide for. If one needs to live off of the state and charity to care for the children, one definitely should not have more. If one spouse’s job is such that there isn’t time for the couple to properly care for a bunch of children, that is a just reason. If a woman was practicing NFP, became pregnant and then obtained an abortion because she needed a new house at that moment would not be accepting God’s will.

I think you will find that most modern couples using NFP accept that a child could always be a possibility. The couples that are completely against more children are using ABC.

fpt,
I’m really curious, you seem to think that the fact that the marital act has a dual end means that there can’t be a hierarchy between those ends. Can you explain why you think so?

This is actually not true, there are definately people on ABC who are willing to accept any children if they happen to conceive. As various Atheistss et alia have been more than willing to point out on other threads on CAF. I would also like to point out that your understanding of NFP seems to be a little faulty in that you seem to think it is less effective than ABC which is actually not true.

Then let me ask you this: should a woman be allowed to use a natural contraceptive, such as Queen Anne’s Lace, which is a plant, to avoid having a child? It is a food product that has a side effect of reducing estorgen production to thwart the implantation of a fertilized egg. This is essentially the SAME process that happens on a monthly cycle in a womans body. During non fertile times a womans body will not allow the implantation of a fertilized ovum.

In what way is knowingly eating an herb (not artificial, but food) that will reduce the possibility of a child being conceived (it is 95% effective, the same as NFP and ABC) any different than using thermometers, charts and a scientific model of fertility and infertility? Nothing is different other than one is THINKING and ACTIVELY ACTING to avoid having children. That is the essence of a contraceptive mentality. It is being done, not for the health of a spouse or to focus on prayer, etc. It is being done exclusively to reduce as much as possible the POSSIBILITY of having a child.

You would be OK with either NFP or eating a natural herb to reduce the possibility of having a child while still have sex, correct? If you are, then how can you say you are OPEN to new life when actively trying to thwart it?

Personally, I would say consuming an herb to prevent fertility is the same thing as taking the pill in mentality. NFP not so much because you aren’t doing anything to your body.

The nature of NFP is to have sex (physical love, sexual love) during infertile time in order to avoid the fecundation because there are existing serious, grave and just reasons. The financial reasons can be, per se, okay. There is no natural moral presumption of sin concerning the social, medical, psychological, moral mental, economical and financial reasons that can justify the use of NFP.

Of course not. What I am saying is you can not divorce the requirement of being open to life in order to have only the sexual pleasure. That is what a contraceptive mentality WANTS to have. While I agree with you that the contraceptive mentality is a very real problem, I think this is not really a good way to describe it. If you simply say that having sex for the unitive aspect alone amounts to a contraceptive mentality then the logical conclusion is that it is wrong to ever have relations when trying to avoid pregnancy, and so NFP to avoid would always be sinful. Phrasing it this way leads to much confusion as to what the Church actually teaches about NFP and contraceptions and can help lead people to believe the Church’s position is illogical and so ignore it. Perhaps you can find a better way to talk about the contraceptive mentality? 🙂

I think you will find that most modern couples using NFP accept that a child could always be a possibility. The couples that are completely against more children are using ABC.
Sure they accept it could be a POSSIBILITY. The point though is are we using NFP in a way that is open to God’s plan for us or in a way that is suited towards our own ends with God’s plan only being accepted when FORCED on us?

Do I want people to breed like crazy? Not unless they want to, but I think the idea of perverting NFP into a Catholic birth control alternative is just mental gymnastics. You either accept God’s will for you as he setup creation or you choose your own will. It is pretty simple.

It is just irritating when it is stated “VII says I can use NFP to avoid children.” Ohh yeah? and when is that acceptable? Grave reasons are required? What are they? Well that is up to you.

So then you must look to the past in Church history and see what is taught. MOST couples are using NFP to avoid children for a NON-GRAVE reason. Those reading here are already ahead of the game and understand. MOST Catholics today have NO CLUE other than what they hear at Church or maybe during their marraige prep classes. The marraige prep classes are almost NEVER given by a priest, much less one who is a moral theologian. Hence you get lay men who teach and expound on the “success” rate of NFP in avoiding children.

Succes Rate? Really? Children are a disease and we need a success rate in avoiding them?

It is really depressing to live in this modern babylon.

This is actually not true, there are definately people on ABC who are willing to accept any children if they happen to conceive. I do realize that perfect NFP use is proven to be as effective as ABC (though I believe most couples don’t use it perfectly). I’ve heard Marquette is really user friendly. You do have a point that not every couple using ABC would abort a child if they became pregnant; the difference is they are taking extreme measures to avoid. I guess NFP just seems more open to life to me. There are no extreme measures being taken to shut down a natural process.

fpt,
I’m really curious, you seem to think that the fact that the marital act has a dual end means that there can’t be a hierarchy between those ends. Can you explain why you think so?
because:

Some documents:

Catechism of the Council of Trent:
But why marriage was instituted is a subject which demands exposition The first reason of its institution is because nature instinctively tends to such a union ; and under the vicissitudes of life and the infirmities of old age, this union is a source of mutual assistance and support. Another is the desire of family, not so much, however, with a view to leave after us heirs to inherit our property and fortune, as to bring up children in the true faith and in the service of God.

Catechism of Saint Pius X:
What is the sacrament of Matrimony?
A. Matrimony is a sacrament, instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ, which creates a holy and indissoluble union between a man and woman, and gives them grace to love one another holily and to bring up their children as Christians.

Code of Canon Law of 1983 :
Can. 1055 §1. " The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring, has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament between the baptized ".

Catechism of the Catholic Church:
1601. “The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.”

The concept of the hierarchy of the ends of marriage was saying, was teaching, was writing officially, I am okay, but only between 1917 (the Code of canon law) to the Vatican II. This is a short period of the story of the church. Before 1917, no hierarchy of the ends of marriage.

Then let me ask you this: should a woman be allowed to use a natural contraceptive, such as Queen Anne’s Lace, which is a plant, to avoid having a child? Ah, I understand now. It seems that you don’t quite understand what NFP is either. I have no problem with NFP but would have huge issues with eating a natural herb to avoid conception. The difference is that with NFP to avoid the method of avoiding is abstinance, with this herb thing, the method is taking some action to render an otherwise fertile sex act infertile. Huge difference. If you still don’t see the difference maybe you should look at this thread forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=701412 I have made an effort there to clarify the difference a little more. If you still don’t see what I am saying or think I am wrong, maybe you should post about it on that thread? We are, after all, getting a little off topic. 🙂
