Water baptism is the normal means that our Lord commanded in order for us to be cleansed of Adam’s sin and be reconciled to God.

However, under the NT covenant, we are each cleansed from Adam’s sin through the water of Baptism and we thereby become Jesus’ disciples and we then have hope of eternal life. (Matthew 28:19) **After Baptism, we must continue in the faith/continue to obey God’s commandments if we desire to inherit eternal life. **Mat 19:17 Rev 22:14 We have hope of eternal life after Baptism Titus 3:7, we do not have a guarantee of eternal life after Baptism.

OSAS is not Scriptural. Jesus reconciles us to God through Baptism, but we must remain faithful to Him (do His Father’s will and obey His commandments) for our entire lives if we desire to inherit eternal life after we die.

Titus 1:16
They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work. Mat 10:33

when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Obedience to God’s commandments until death is required of us in order to inherit eternal life. If we willfully sin after we become Jesus’ disciples/followers, then we lose our salvation. 2 Peter 2:20 We are then worse off than if we had never been saved in the first place.

Jesus went and preached to the souls in prison (purgatory) during His three days in the grave.

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.

Those persons who had still not paid what was fully owed for their own personal sins were still in purgatory or as Paul called it “prison.” This prison came to be known as Purgatory because this is the place that sinners went to after death until their sins were fully purged from their souls.

Sorry, Timothy, but you are mistaken. What I have posted has been the teaching of Jesus’ Church for about 2000 years. A person cannot simply pick up our Bible 2000 years after it is written and then interpret it for himself accurately without the Church’s guidance.

Romans 8:30
Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Of course, this statement is true. All those predestined He also called. All those He predestined He also called and justified. All those whom He glorified He also called, justified, and predestined. However, not all those who are called are predestined. Not all those whom He justifies are predestined.

Matthew 22:14
“For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Not “all” the “called” inherit eternal life. Only some of them are worthy of His calling and He chooses/approves only the “worthy” persons to actually inherit eternal life. Revelation 3:4

God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth and Jesus died as a ransom for all men. Yet, not all men are saved. Salvation depends on each person’s own free will choices. Whom will they choose to serve? Themselves, false gods, Satan, or God?

Joshua 24:15
choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

1 Timothy 2:3-6

God desires all men to be saved and Jesus died as a ransom for all men, but not all men are saved. It depends on each person’s free will choices.

Romans 1:5-7
Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; 7 To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The “called” of Jesus Christ are called to be saints. These persons in Rome were called and they were also justified through Baptism. The called who are justified who later choose to disobey God’s commandments are no longer justified/saved and so they were never predestined and they were not glorified (they will not be glorified after death).

1 Corinthians 1:2
To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

Ephesians 4:1
I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to** walk worthy** of the calling with which you were called,

but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,

We are called to be saints (holy). We become sanctified (holy) and justified (saved) by Baptism. However, some choose to fall away through disobedience after they have been sanctified and justified through Baptism.

Galatians 1:6-8
I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.

People who turn away from the gospel (disobey God’s teachings) are accursed. These fallen away Christians are now accursed (damned) and they lost their salvation even though they had been called and they had been justified through Baptism. Unless they repent before death, they will not be saved and they will not inherit eternal life.

Jesus only predestined those persons who are faithful to Him and His gospel until their deaths (they are faithful/love Him by their obedience to His commandments).

Mark 13:13
And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

We must be faithful until death (to the end) in order to be saved. Jesus knew who would be faithful until their deaths before He created them. Only these faithful persons did he predestine for eternal life.

James 1:12
Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

We must endure temptation and overcome it until our deaths in order to be approved to receive the crown of eternal life.

We love Him by obeying His commandments until our deaths.

John 14:15
If you love Me, keep My commandments.

John 14:21
He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

Hebrews 5:9
And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,

We must obey Him until our deaths in order to be approved for eternal salvation.

So, back to Romans 8:30
Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

He knew every person’s free will choices before He created them. They were predestined according to their works. Revelation 20:12 Only those whom He knew would remain faithful until death were predestined, called, justified, and glorified.

the point is the conversation with Nicodemus and Jesus, born of “water” and “spirit” to enter the kingdom. Water is the purification ceremony in Numbers and repeated in Ezek, which Nicodemus would have been thinking, meaning by your repentance you will be made clean and you will receive the HS of promise. This is the born-again Christian. The washing of regeneration another act of God - Titus 3:5

Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus certainly brought these Old Covenant things to mind. However, Jesus made a New Covenant and these things in the Old Covenant are now fulfilled and perfected and so they no longer mean the exact same thing. They were but a precursor/prefiguration of Jesus’ new covenant baptism. Now, in Jesus’ New Covenant, Jesus’ water Baptism remits/takes away sin.

Hebrews 8:13
In that He says, “A new covenant, ”He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

Hebrews 12:24
to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

Romans 6:3-4
Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Baptism takes away/remits our sins.

Acts 2:38

Water Baptism remits/takes away sin. The water of Baptism applies the merits of Jesus’ blood sacrifice to our souls and our sins are washed away.

The blood and water are both important. The water of baptism applies the merits of the blood of Christ to our souls and we are then spiritually regenerated/born again.

1 John 5:6
This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.

1 John 5:8
And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.

This is speaking of Baptism. The water of Baptism applies the blood of Christ’s sacrifice to our souls and this is done by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit then moves into our souls and we become the temples of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 3:16
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

What does “hope of eternal life” mean?

Titus 3:7
that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

“Hope of eternal life” means that since we have been justified we now have hope that we will inherit eternal life when we die. However, we must obey God’s commandments until we die (until the end) if we desire to fulfill this hope. Mark 13:13

1 John 3:3
And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Hebrews 3:6
but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

We must continue to live a Christian life until death in order to realize our hope of eternal life. If we do not, then we do not inherit eternal life.

Hebrews 10:36
For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise:

The promise is eternal life, which is the fulfillment of our hope if we continue firm to the end of our lives in obedience to God’s commandments.

1 John 2:25
And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.

if one is immersed into Christ via the Holy Spirit, then one is guaranteed eternal life 1 John 5:13 among others.

Baptism by fire confirms the believer in his faith and helps him (gives him graces) to live a Christian life. It helps us to further our hope of eternal life. We do not have a guarantee of eternal life while we are on earth. We only have hope of eternal life.

What is our guarantee of eternal life?

It is the Holy Spirit living in our souls at the time of our deaths. If we have defiled our temples/souls with sin, then the Holy Spirit is no longer living in our souls and we are no longer saved because He living in us (our temples) at the time of our deaths is our only guarantee of eternal life.

Ephesians 1:13-14
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

2 Corinthians 5:5
Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

God will not know anyone on Judgment Day who does not have the Holy Spirit living within him. He will say, “I never knew you.”

1 Corinthians 3:16-18
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17** If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him**. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. 18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.

If a person defiles his soul with sin, then the Holy Spirit moves out and the person is no longer saved. It is the Holy Spirit who sanctifies us and keeps us sanctified by His presence in our souls. If this sinful person does not repent before death, then the Holy Spirit destroys/damns him for eternity.

Matthew 7:21-23
**“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. **22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness! (commit sins/do evil)’

Acts 8:15-17
15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

“Baptism in the Lord Jesus” remits/removes both Original Sin and personal sins from our souls at the time of our Baptisms. The Holy Spirit gives us more graces in the baptism of fire (Sacrament of Confirmation) in order to help us all to live a good Christian life until our deaths.

Acts 22:16
And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

Baptism washes away our sins.

1 John 5:13
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

They have to continue to believe in the name of the Son in order to continue to be saved. This is their own free will choice. To “continue to believe” means to continue to obey His gospel/His commandments.

Romans 11:22
Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.

Water baptism is an ordinance or command, not a sacrament in my Biblical worldview.

It is both. Baptism is called a sacrament because it gives grace to our souls. This is the meaning of sacrament.

These sacraments are called mysteries in Scripture. Since there are many different types of mysteries in this world and in Scripture, they differentiate between them, and the holy religious ones are called by the name Sacrament.

Matthew 13:11
He answered and said to them, “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

1 Corinthians 4:1-2
Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.

Partaking in these mysteries/sacraments makes it possible for us to inherit eternal life because they give us graces to help each of us to live a good Christian life until death.

These seven mysteries/sacraments are baptism, confirmation, confession/penance, Holy Eucharist, matrimony, holy orders, and anointing of the sick. They all give graces.

As I said, look at the meanings of the words; to pour over is not the meaning; I understand that if there was a lack of water that pouring was obviously the exception, which get us back to the hearts intent before God, If one’s heart content before God that water will remove sin of any kind, then God will see that as viewing the work on the cross as insufficient and He will not be pleased; from my Biblical worldview.

The Church states that “pour over” is one of the correct ways to baptize. Since the Church leaders (bishops with pope as head bishop) have God’s authority to do this, who are we to argue? The leaders of His Church rule over us in the faith. They make decisions which bind us. Their decisions are upheld in heaven by God.

Hebrews 13:7
Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.

Hebrews 13:17
Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

Matthew 18:17-18
And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.
18 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

If we do not do what His Church’s leaders tell us to do, if we reject what He teaches us through them; then we are rejecting Him. The pope (successor of Peter) is His chief representative on earth for the New Covenant (only he has the keys of the kingdom of heaven Matthew 16:18-19) just as Moses was His chief representative on earth for the Old Covenant.

An ordinance??? An ordinance is a law just like the Mosaic Covenant was a law. I thought we were past legalism. Baptism is a sacrament, so important that the very last thing Jesus told His Apostles to do was to baptize people. As for those denominations that wish to trivialize baptism by saying it is just an ordinance I say run like the wind away from them as they will pull you into hell with them.

Jesus freed us from Adam’s sin by His death/blood sacrifice.** We did no works and could do no works worthy enough to earn this freedom from Adam’s sin. Only He who is perfect could free us from Original Sin and its consequences.

Jesus chooses to reconcile us to Himself through Baptism because He chose Baptism as the means to wash away Adam’s Original Sin and our own personal sins on our souls at the time of our Baptisms. This was His choice to apply the blood of His sacrifice to our souls in this manner in order to cleanse them. It is best if we obey Him.

Romans 5:18-19
Therefore, as through one man’s offense (Adam’s) judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

Jesus’ free gift gives us hope of eternal life, not a guarantee of eternal life.

Titus 3:7

I can hope to win the lottery and so I buy a ticket, but my ticket and hope do not guarantee that I will win. Hope is not a guarantee.

If Satan devours us (because we succumbed to his temptations and committed sins) then we are no longer saved. If we were saved forever, OSAS, then we would not have to ever worry about Satan devouring us. So, OSAS is not true.

We deny Christ by doing evil deeds/works. He does not save those who deny Him.

Titus 1:16

You are again mistaken. This is what happens when a person picks up a book about 2000 years after it is written and then thinks that he can interpret it correctly without the Catholic Church’s (it is her book handed down throughout the ages) guidance who is guided into all truth by the Holy Spirit.

John 16:13
However, when He,** the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you** (His Church) into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Jesus founded only one Church. He promised to be with it always. It is best to listen to it. It alone is the foundation and support of the truth.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Baptism means to “immerse into” and you will not find any place in Scripture where infants are baptized nor the first 2-3oo years of church history.

Why would you expect to find references to “the first two or thee hundred years of Christian history” in the Bible?

The Christians at the time knew what their customs were - they didn’t need written instructions for that. We find the history of those times recorded in the writings of the earliest followers of the Apostles, and that’s where we find references to infant baptism.

As to immersion or pouring, the Didache (written in about 50 AD) tells us that either one is fine.

In my opinion, the most damning aspect of all these various versions - that all rely on Solo Scriptura - is that they are all over the place in matter of belief! Anyone who is genuinely interested in finding the One, True Church - just has to look at all of these competing and contradictory beliefs of protestantism and note that Christ preached unity - not DISunity.

Each little splinter group keeps on repeating their version of error and trying ot pass it off as valid - in the face of historical evidence to the contrary. This to me should give each member pause and just look at what happened - in the real world - prior to the 16th Century. Just how did Christianity withstand persecution, heresy, and the temptations of Satan before Luther & Co decided to make a religion in their own likeness and understanding? The answer is the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity - promised by Christ to always be with the Church founded by Christ on Peter - guided Christ’s Church (and that would be the Catholic Church).

That is a bold face lie. The early church baptized infants. As for Christ you better find out the real reason He was baptized by John. The scriptures say John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. So please tell us what sin did Jesus commit that He had to repent for. Your sola scriptura is failing you miserably. One more thing, circumcision was the entry rite into Judaism. Baptism is the entry rite into the Body of Christ. And for that reason is given to infants so that they too may share in the grace of God. This is how the early church saw it and wrote of it. For instance John Chrysostom wrote:

“You see how many are the benefits of baptism, and some think its heavenly grace consists only in the remission of sins, but we have enumerated ten honors [it bestows]! For this reason we baptize even infants, though they are not defiled by [personal] sins, so that there may be given to them holiness, righteousness, adoption, inheritance, brotherhood with Christ, and that they may be his [Christ’s] members” (Baptismal Catecheses in Augustine, Against Julian 1:6:21 [A.D. 388]).

Now you show me one person in the first 1,000 years of church history that taught adult baptism only.
