Dear All,

I am looking for a traditional metal/brass crucifix which is about 6-7 inches long. I would appreciate any advice on how and where to purchase one (preferably from an online store). Thank you!

This is a start: EWTN Religious Catalogue - crucifixes There are wall and tabletop crosses, a few that are metal.
Hi, thank you for your help. I just checked their online catalogue and couldn’t find one that meets my requirements. I just want a simple, not ornate, yet traditional looking crucifix. I would like that the crucifix be weighty, yet not too big. It is neither a wall or table crucifix, but one that I could hold when I sleep. So ideally it should be a metal one around 6-7 inches. But thank you for your reply and concern. 🙂

You could look on eBay, too, and you’ll find hundreds and hundreds of them. Try searching with the words “pectoral crucifix” and also “antique” or “vintage.” People seem to list ones they’ve found at estate sales, and which had previously belonged to nuns or priests. The attached picture is a pretty standard one; I think the Carmelites use that style. A lot of them also have the skull and crossbones / memento mori near the base of the cross. That style seems like it would be good to hold while meditating or praying; it reminds me of the ones which some Saints are depicted holding in old paintings. I think it’s a good idea; I’d like to have one, too.

I’m guessing you want one that is suitable for a wall so it wouldn’t have a base?

ETA: I suggest you google** brass crucifix 6"** (changing the metal or size) and click on Images and see what you like. If you find one, check the source to see if it is a online retailer. Then, if you want, you could check back here to see if the company is reputable or if anyone has experience ordering from them. You could visit another catalogue site like Leaflet Missal but you will have to click through so many pages.

Yes, I am looking for one that to hold in praying or meditating, and sleeping.🙂 Like the one that used by nuns. Thank you so much for your reply. I will try my luck on ebay. 😃

Actually, I just went to Google and did a Google Images search for “hand held crucifix,” and some nice looking ones came up. There were some really nice, comfy-looking wooden ones which you could probably carry while you’re walking around and no one would even notice. For some reason Google won’t let me drag and paste the address, though, so just type in: Hand Held Crucifix.

I think a Benedictine Cross would be right up your alley. This particular cross has a medal of St. Benedict in the middle where the crossbeams intersect. It is for just that purpose, to ward off evil.

In the meantime, you can adopt the sleeping pose that the monks have used for ages; sleeping on your back with your arms crossed over your chest. Apparently, that works just as well.

Just a suggestion from another person who feels the need to curl up to something blessed when she sleeps- I sometimes wrap a rosary around my wrist and hold the crucifix in my hand.

Haha- I thought I was a silly girl- glad to know i’m not alone:)

As a poster said previously, eBay is a wonderful treasure-trove for items like this! I bought one a year or two ago, I wasn’t quite sure what I’d be getting from the pictures but I knew it was antique.

When it arrived, it was a lovely solid metal crucifix hanging in its own little arched-window shaped wooden box, the whole thing about 6 inches tall. The box is lined with velvet (which has faded though the years), and there are two hinged doors on the front.

I’m guessing it was a crucifix used for travel, possibly by a priest. I paid next-to-nothing for it, and I know it must have so much history. I really urge you to browse and see what you can find! 🙂

If there are any Catholic stores in your area, I would visit them and support them. That way you can see and hold what you are interested in and be assured of the quality before you buy.
