As the mother of a hockey player and two lacrosse players, I can tell you why hockey jerseys are called sweaters. Remember hockey developed as an outdoor sport played in very cold weather. In those days the players actually did wear sweaters which gave them more freedom of motion than heavy coats would have. (Remember ski sweaters?) They kept the term “sweater” even as they moved indoors and no longer wore wool sweaters. The name “sweater” is now part of hockey tradition. Thanks be to God that proceeds from those very “cool” looking jerseys are going to give the youth program at Our Lady of Peace Church funds to provide activities to lead the young people of Erie to Our Lord.
