I need someone to help me.I use to go to church regularly but got away from the church and now I am searching for where I belong…I believe in the blood of Jesus to cover my sins and was Baptized Baptist. My sister is LDS and I have been listening to them and going to their church a bit but I really don’t know about the Book of Mormon. It’s possible I guess.I had asked for a sign and I got the sign answered so I thought they were the true church. Then I read here of errors in it. Why would there be errors and why would God need to build another church ? But I did get an answer to my prayer.I feel as a battle for my very being is waged. They have pretty much let me know if I send them away now they believe I will go to hell. They say they have the priest hood. I look at their fruits and they do good things and are moral good people with good fruits.( Matthew 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. ) I’m not a Baptist any more.I’ve seen too many things I feel they have disappointed me in the fruits. Now I’m trying to find where I belong.I look a the Catholic Church and I see both good and not so good things over time.No offense meant to anyone. How do I know if they are the true church? LDS or Catholic ??? For those who wouldn’t mine saying a prayer for me I’d appreciate it this is killing me inside.

Zipporah.

Welcome to CAF.

You have my prayers.

Whatever you do and where ever you go, dont allow anyone to pressure you.
Put God as the center of your life right now, the main part of the equation. Trust and follow Him.

If you feel you are being lead to study both LDS and Catholicism, then do so.

For those who are curious, there is what is known as RCIA. (NEVER any pressure to join.) The first part of that is called “inquiry” and it is simple that. People go with all kinds of questions and concerns. Many distorts and myths are cleared up plus a very honest and bold faced look at the weakness and worts of the Catholic church thru out history

(not to mention plain old corruption. )

Ive been both a devout Mormon and now am a devout Catholic. Both have been fruitful parts of my spiritual journey.

My best advice to you is read the Gospels and the rest of the Bible and get close to Him.

And pray, pray, pray.

First what the poster above me said is perfect! Get close to God and pray!

I’m not sure if this will be to much of a help for you but on Catholic Answers we have some great articles that can give you more information about both Churches.

Heres a great one about the Catholic Church catholic.com/library/pillar.asp

And a good one to start about the Book of Mormon catholic.com/library/Problems_with_the_Book_of_Mormon.asp

catholic.com/library/faith_tracts.asp Here is where I found all of these!

I’ll keep you in my prayers.

Zipporah, you are in my prayers.

Both Mormons and Catholics would tell you their church is the true church. BTW, strictly speaking, Mormons do not have “church” buildings – they have temples within in wards, etc.
I have a Mormon co-worker who refers to her place of worship as “church”, but in one of our conversations it was clear to me that they do not believe in the Trinity [God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit.]

May the Holy Spirit direct your steps.

In Christ’s Love,
Jeanette

Zipporah,

I hope you are doing well, and will be prayerful in your decisions. Please know that if you think anyone is teaching you what you said about “hell”, they are either not active LDS or they have a completely erroneous understanding about that subject.

Your decision shouldn’t be “killing you inside”–it should be able to be made as a comfortable, knowing decision that will seem reasonable, so I hope you’ll take it easy on yourself and others and trust the impressions you have as you pray sincerely and study the gospel of Jesus Christ, with a good background in the Bible.

Thank you for your prayers.

Marie5890 I’ll check out the RCIA site.

JeanetteKoron I know they do not believe in Holy Trinity and this another problem I have.I believe Jesus is God in the flesh. Then they hit me with why did he pray to the Father and why did the Father leave Him on the cross, but Jesus said he and his Father are one.I believe we can’t understand some things. They just are like the Trinity. If I make any sense.Never had any doubts till I started talking to the LDS.Still I believe in the Trinity.

Zipporah,

Unfortunately, LDS don’t accept the Holy Trinity. In their ignorance they say things that of course, are based on their lack of understanding and acceptance.

The Holy Trinity is three Persons, One Being. Jesus can, and does, talk to the Father.

Why did the Father “leave Jesus on the Cross”? Well Zipporah, the answer is of course found in the Bible. Because He is the Father’s Perfect Sacrifice. Why would anyone who claims to know Who Jesus is ask you this?

Take your time, pray, read the Bible, and don’t let anyone pressure you, especially with threats of going to hell.

Peace.

Rebecca

Z., there was a Penguin Life of Joseph Smith, a nicely written little book by Robert Remini.

In it, the noted historian tried to be as balanced as possible. He had no axes to grind. Take a look at Smith’s life and the kinds of things the LDS get into. . . and see whether you can swim in that messy pool.

And yes, get into the whole Archaeology thing. Take a look at www.exmormon.org, too.🙂

Zipporah,
Along with the other resources already listed, I suggest you also view “The Bible vs. the Book of Mormon” at youtube.com/watch?v=dTtq62XQ4jw.

Many Mormons are wonderful, honest people who believe what they practice is right, and much of their terminology sounds very Christian, but their belief behind that terminology is vastly different from what we believe. For example, can you get your mind around one day you can become a god equivalent to God? If not, in my opinion you’ll continue to struggle with fully accepting Mormonism.

My prayers are with you on your journey.

Zipporah,
You short entry sounds challenging. Each of us is on a spiritual journey to find God, learn truth, and follow His Will for us. I have thought a lot about these topics and how so many seem lead by God, but they attend different churches.

What I believe is that God is in control and he is trying to teach us. Individuals will find their path leading them to different places, seemingly contradictory for God to guide us to different places, but He knows what is best for us. We have to remember that He is not finished with us. We have to continue to lead us and guide us.

What should you do? Continue to pray, continue to search, read the Bible and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. If you do this, you will always do what is right. Be assured that others will be dismayed with whatever your choice is. The important thing is to continue to do these things and be prepared to go wherever God calls you.

Life is about finding God, serving Him, and learning to be obedient to all that he asks of us. This is not easy. He asks us to love our enemies, to serve those who abuse us, and to forgive the unforgivable. To be a Christian is a daily choice to serve blindly, to love completely, and to rejoice as flames burn us entirely.

Follow the Spirit and He will guide you. Keep following and He will keep guiding you.

Zipporah,

The answers above are gentle and kind, and, to be sure, prayer is very important. However, I know the correct answer to your question is the Catholic Church. We need to be bold in our answer, if we truly care about this vulnerable soul. Catholics need to be burning with the Love of Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Look, Zipporah, this is your chance to open your soul to a myriad of graces unavailable to those who through ignorance or stubborness refuse to enter the One True Church. You have heard it, now it is up to you. Thank you for visiting here and asking for our help.

I know many Mormons, and they are good people–in fact, they behave better than the vast majority of Catholics I know. But the origins and the history of the LDS is truly beyond belief. I have read the Book of Mormon and it, like the Quran, doesn’t hold water. Will these books tempt you to believe? YES. Christians who read these books will wonder if they are following the true faith.

If you are a reasonable person and want to follow the True Master, you simply cannot find a more logical Church than the Catholic Church. I chose the Church by its Master. Jesus is the teacher I wish to follow, and the Catholic Church has been following Him faithfully for over 2 millenia. If you desire to be one of his disciples, it is that simple. It is possible that you will stumble into the deceptions of other religions, and I want you to avoid this path.

It would be so easy to let you wander on your way to Emmaus and hope that your prayers will bring you to the truth. But, the appeal of these religions is very strong; after all, they have deceived countless millions for centuries. But I love your soul, and I must tell you that there is no better way to God than through His One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

Hi Z,

It is truth you seek! Follow the Holy Spirit, “seek and you will find” and “knock and it shall be opened to you”. Pray for wisdom and understanding, and believe Jesus in all that He shares with us in His eternal word, the Bible.

I, too, was a devote Mormon, who tried exteremly hard to put all the pieces together but for me and my family; the more we tried the more it unwound. My family and I are now happy devote Catholics.

Don’t ever let anyone pressure you or threaten you!! Remember that even the “Father of Lies” can deliver SIGNS.

The Lord be with you on your journey!

Oh no it would be blaspheme to think one could be equal to God.I would never think or believe that.If that is true then I can never be a Mormon.

Well and good. On the show on EWTN, The Journey Home, the guest tonight is a Mormon convert, if you are interested in watching it.

Hi Zipporah,

You quoted Matthew 7:20. Here is a little insight about that verse that I hope might be of help.
Doing good things and being moral are good fruits, however in the next verse Jesus tells us exactly what to look for to know a true prophet.

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matt. 7:21)

In other words the fruits of a true prophet are followers who do the will of the Father! The followers of a true prophet have been taught to do the will of the Father and therefore they are following the straight and narrow way (Matt 7:14) that leads to the kingdom of heaven. “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” (Matt. 7:20)

Continue to study the gospel of Jesus Christ and always seek and follow the guidance you receive through prayer. You are in my prayers.

My only request now is that you do not visit anti-Catholic websites to learn about Catholicism. Stay away from them because they will misguide you, lie to you, and will fill your head with falsehoods. Talk only to Catholics to learn about One, Holy and True Church.

Any and all anti-“insert name of religion here” site or material is necessarily twisted to meet the objectives of the authors. They are an affront to scholarly research on any religion and I personally view them as a spiritual affront because most of them are not an honest reflection of the religion being discussed. If you question this, go to an anti-Catholic website and read the garbage they write.

Most have counseled you to follow the Holy Spirit and this is the best advice. Be as Peter of old when asked by the Savior, whom say you that I am? When Peter identified him as the Son of God, Jesus said he was blessed because he had listened to God.

Do nothing because a man tells you, but follow the Spirit always and ignore the chatter of others.

I used to be a Mormon. I would run away from them as fast as I could. The Book of Mormon by any objective standard is simply a fraud. I became Catholic because I believe Christ established a church while he was here on earth and that the Catholic Church is the only organization with a legitimate claim to being that church. Christ would not allow the church he established to apostatize. The Catholic Church has consistently taught the moral teachings and other doctrines that Christ left us so there is no reason to go around looking for another path. That’s my short answer, but read the Catechism of the Catholic Church if you want the long answer. It’s a beautiful summation of Christian truth. My wife and children are still Mormon, but they and the rest of the Mormons have been deceived by the good people who are simply following falsehood. Any good which can be found in Mormonism is a result of the LDS Church following the moral teachings handed down to it by the Catholic Church.

Just as a general comment, I feel the above comment that Mormons as a group act very decently and good is worth stressing and praising. 🙂

While these practical lifestyle and moral applications are invaluable, you probably need to look to the religious reasons. I think the theologies of the churches differ considerably.

Who is it that is sending you away???

The Mormons believe all people go to heaven, but non-Mormons at the lowest level. So you should not be getting threats of going to hell by Mormons.

There are certain branches within the Baptist belief that are very anti-Catholic to the point of bigotry and ignorance, and then there are others who share the Lord and fellowship with Catholics…

Stay away from groups taking the place of God and condemning other people to hell…because these types of believers have no power whatsoever to put you in hell.
