Thank you This pretty much covers it all.Wow.Thank you.

Thank you all. My husband and I have decided tell the missionaries that we will not be attending service any longer with them.
Hi Zipporah

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Prov. 3:5-6)

Also please read Matt 7:7-8. All the advice I have given comes directly from the scriptures, not a web site.

God bless you in your search for truth!

Dear Zipporah,

One might ask oneself about Joseph Smith’s multiple marriages/wives and how that squares with the New Testament.

And also with Jesus’ own words about how He would be with His Church, together with the Holy Spirit, for all times - and how that squares with any idea of “apostasy.”

Also, where in the New Testament are the other Mormon scriptures mentioned as being another testament etc.

And who else, apart from the Mormons, believe as they do about Christ in America etc.

But the life and (fantastic) teaching of Joseph Smith is itself the biggest non-starter.

As for asking ex-Mormons about their experiences - I doubt very much that you will get any critique of Mormonism from its members.

I know lots of Catholics who can often find nothing very good to say about several aspects of the Church - but who remain within it.

This is one of my favorite prayers. It is perfect for times like this, where your help, your need, is found in Him and filled by Him. Our need is infinite and can only be filled by the Infinite. Turn to Jesus Christ, and let Him fill you.

Peace be with you and God bless.

Rebecca

Rebecca…can’t get the prayer.

It is a Sunday Psali of the Coptics, being prayed at Midnight Praises by Coptic monks, in English.

I sought after You: from the depths of my heart
My Lord Jesus: help me.
Loosen for me: all the bonds of sin
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Be a help to me: so that You may save me
My Lord Jesus: help me.
May Your goodness: come speedily to me
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Overshadow me: with the shadow of Your wings
My Lord Jesus: help me.
In six days You have made: all the creation
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Seven times everyday: I will praise Your Name
My Lord Jesus: help me.
All the creation: glorifies Your Name
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Yours is the Lordship: and the Authority
My Lord Jesus: help me.
Make haste, O my God: so that You may save me
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Every knee: bows down before You
My Lord Jesus: help me.
All the diverse tongues: together bless Your Name
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Turn away Your face: from all of my sins
My Lord Jesus: help me.
Blot out, O God: all my iniquities
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

You know my thoughts: and You search my depths
My Lord Jesus: help me.
Create in me: a clean heart
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Your Holy Spirit: do not take away from me
My Lord Jesus: help me.
Incline Your ears: make haste and hear me
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Set before me a law: in the way of Your justice
My Lord Jesus: help me.
Your Kingdom O my God: is an eternal kingdom
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

You are the Son of God: I believe in You
My Lord Jesus: help me.
You Who carries the sins of the world Have mercy upon me
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Forgive me the multitude: of my iniquities
My Lord Jesus: help me.
All of the souls: together bless Your Name
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Have patience with me: do not hasten to destroy me
My Lord Jesus: help me.
Early in the morning: I will rise and Bless Your Name
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Your yoke is sweet: and Your burden is light
My Lord Jesus: help me.
In the accepted time: hear me
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Oh, how beloved: is Your Holy Name
My Lord Jesus: help me.
Disperse away from me: all of the devils
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Sow within me: the seed of Your righteousness
My Lord Jesus: help me.
Grant us Your true peace: and forgive us our sins
My Lord Jesus Christ: help me.

Oh no it would be blaspheme to think one could be equal to God.I would never think or believe that.If that is true then I can never be a Mormon.

Zipporah, please take your time and investigate these seperate churches.
  • as another said, pray for the guidance of the Holy Ghost
  • don’t accept the word of faith X about faith Y, speak to the source.
The second bullet is soo important as Catholics often don’t have a solid grasp of LDS and visa versa. Even the example given here of “man becoming God” was answered incorrectly.
FYI, this has been a Catholic teaching since the ECF, and is in the Catechism.
“For the Son of God became man so that we might become God” (Par 460 in Catechism)
Understanding it is more complicated than hearing the quote.

This is about the fourth time at CAF you have tried to claim this teaching as the same for Catholics and Mormons. You know it is not the same; very dishonest of you.

So what’s new. You can explain it until you are blue in the face and the LDS will not understand.

I’m not sure I would expect Him to completely understand what the Catholic Church teaches but he does know the Catechism is not teaching what the Mormon Church teaches.
Would a Mormon consider it to be a form of proselytizing to make this ‘we are just like you’ claim over and over again, when they know it isn’t true?

This should be enough, very dishonest. I think you know what it means to Catholics but you choose not to disclose this. Just throw it out there like that. Yes we can become like Jesus who is God, but we are still Created by Him. Anything good about us will be because of Him period. Huge difference, its black and white.

** came from others to me as I learned about the 2000 year old Catholic faith 12 years ago. Gift, after gift after gift. Truth is so beautiful. It offers true peace in good times and in bad times. I have been Catholic for 12 years and it amazes me every day. In essence I have now been to my first 12 real Christmas’s (Christ-Mass) and my first 12 real Easters. I also get both and everything else in between at each and every Mass. The History along with the Authenticity is absolutely mind boggling. **

As far as there being bad in the Church, this is reality is it not? I myself am a sinner. Its why I go to Church, its why I go to Confession. The Catholic Church has a way of pointing this out to me. As we have a life-sized Crucifix above the Alter in my Church here in Logan Utah. But most of all it lets me know how much I am loved by Jesus Himself. He is the doctor and I am one of His beloved patients. Coming from an LDS background I myself have been freed from myself. Why?
I know who Jesus is now. I understand the Parable of the Prodigal Son, the good grain and the weeds. I know who to run to, who to stay close to and why.

God Bless you

I need someone to help me.I use to go to church regularly but got away from the church and now I am searching for where I belong…I believe in the blood of Jesus to cover my sins and was Baptized Baptist. My sister is LDS and I have been listening to them and going to their church a bit but I really don’t know about the Book of Mormon. It’s possible I guess.I had asked for a sign and I got the sign answered so I thought they were the true church. Then I read here of errors in it. Why would there be errors and why would God need to build another church ? But I did get an answer to my prayer.I feel as a battle for my very being is waged. They have pretty much let me know if I send them away now they believe I will go to hell. They say they have the priest hood. I look at their fruits and they do good things and are moral good people with good fruits.( Matthew 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. ) I’m not a Baptist any more.I’ve seen too many things I feel they have disappointed me in the fruits. Now I’m trying to find where I belong.I look a the Catholic Church and I see both good and not so good things over time.No offense meant to anyone. How do I know if they are the true church? LDS or Catholic ??? For those who wouldn’t mine saying a prayer for me I’d appreciate it this is killing me inside.
One more thing.
After I learned a lot about the Catholic faith 12 years ago I put this together with help from other Catholics who understand thier faith here in Utah.
utahmission.com/pages/Common_Questions.html

All of these things helped me so much so I though I would share with you.
God Bless
P.S
Some who helped me were ex Mormons. The part about do we worship Saints came from a Man named Scott Chism who passed away a few years ago. He was a Deacon Here in Logan Utah. Great guy. He wrote this as well"

First of all pray. Second of all, examine the credentials of both Churches. If you are going to believe that one Church is founded on God, then you have to go beyond the “do good, live justly” idea - Any religion or philosophy could say that. In addition, make sure you go into the background of the churches and see how they got started, where, why, and when.
The thing I have trouble with in the Mormon foundation story is the whole restoration idea - that Joseph Smith had to refound the Church and new apostles were chosen. That strikes me as incredibly odd for two reasons:
  1. Jesus said to Peter, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.”
  2. If the mormons are right, then Jesus not only lied above, but he essentially said, “Hey, Cavalry is over and the price is paid, but I’m going to give the truth to some guy 1,900 years from now. Until then, make do.”
That does not seem like our Lord to me!

I typically struggle with these same things as making this decision,You are not alone.
If it did not require re-baptism I would go to the Mormon church more often. I don’t like someone telling me my baptism isn’t valid.I think that’s BS, one is as good as the other. But I don’t’ like how the catholic church says its ok to drink if you don’t get drunk, and sells beer and liqueur during fall festivals, and has a bar sponsored bulletin.I never really understood my relationship with God and Christ until I went to the Mormon church.
Its give and take; I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable talking to a bishop in a ward, in a confession ritual like I would a Catholic priest. I don’t know why the Catholic church is not as organized as the LDS. are. Amongst other things, if you are a LDS member, you can pay very little money and go to BYU Idaho for a fraction of the cost of any State university, or Catholic university. However BYU in SLC and BYU in Hawaii are a different stories as far as price is concerned.
Cheers!

Thank you all for your replies.I am going to read the Catechism.I’ve never read it before that I know of ,maybe bits of it ,but not all of it.

I was told if I had "knowledge of the true church"and rejected the knowledge they (LDS) gave me I would go to outer darkness. Most of my family has became LDS and it’s my understanding if they leave they believe they will go to outer darkness or hell.I was set to be Baptized but backed out and that didn’t go over very well.I just couldn’t go through with it.I believe in the Holy Trinity (they don’t) and I think they got the Adam sin thing mixed up so I backed and wanted to prove those things with the Bible and they keep giving me the book of Mormon and the more I read it the more I don’t believe it.I love my family but I can’t become LDS for them. The more research I do I see the Catholic Church as oldest church. Then the LDS hit me with the Great Apostasy ,the dark ages and the Inquisition and I get all confused. Then I see videos like the ones posted here and and I think I can’t be LDS or told they believe they are going to be gods. Then my sister tells me that’s a lie.Sometimes they make things seems so right and then I go off alone and I think that’s not right, but when I’m with them sometimes I feel so small.Sorry for the rambling.I’m praying.

***The candid and truthful answer friend hs to do with WHERE YOU DECIDE YOU WANT TO SPEND ETERNITY?

LDS [God Bless them] is NOT a religion but a CULT. They hold Jesus as a Prophet not as the God-man that He is. They don’[t accept the bible as the inspired words of God[yes they caim too, but don’t.] They don’t accept th Trinity, the realities of Heaven or Hell; and while they do hold to very moral standards, not accepting God is th ONE unforgiveable sin.

ODD that they would send you to a HELL that they don’t even believe in!

Look for my PM mesage…

od Bless you,
Pat

What do LDS know of Catholic, or Christian history? zero. They accept only what they have been told and never research it. They have a Protestant view. There is of course, a Catholic view. Go ahead and research all of Christian history the good and the bad. If LDS members have something to say about bad history, theirs is not so perfect. Sinners casting stones comes to mind.

Individual Catholics can, and do sin. The question is, does this cause God to abandon us, or, does His Mercy manifest itself even greater? Do we turn away from God in our sins, or do we seek forgiveness? The Holy Spirit does not fail. Jesus has not abandoned His Church. LDS would like us to believe God has abandoned us, yet, miraculously their claim is that their church cannot fail. How is it the Holy Spirit works for them but for no one else?

St. Paul has some very good insights. Read Romans, chapters 5 through 8.

God bless.

First off you can’t go to Outer Darkness in Mormon theology unless you have already been baptized Mormon. I guess I’m eligible because I left the LDS Church, but as long as you don’t join the LDS Church you can’t go to Outer Darkness.

If I were you I would just leave the Mormons alone. They won’t tell you the truth about their doctrine until you have been baptized. And you don’t learn some of it until you go to the temple a year after being baptized. Do you really believe plural marriage is of God? Do you believe you can be a God someday? Mormons teach that and don’t let them tell you they don’t. I was an active Mormon for 32 years so I know a little about it.

They mean well, I’m sure, not wanting you to be separated from God. But I believe this sort of thing preys on people who don’t know too much about the Bible, a category which you fortunately don’t fall into ;). If I wasn’t Christian, I might’ve fallen into the same problem when I ran into Mormon “elders” in my town. They have a compelling message, but not a truthful one.
I don’t believe it.I love my family but I can’t become LDS for them
My heart goes out to you. I am the first Catholic in 5 generations of my family (the others are non-denominational Evangelicals, Methodists, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Baptists…) I didn’t get too much resistance, though, so I can’t say I compare. But I know where you’re coming from.

So what’s new. You can explain it until you are blue in the face and the LDS will not understand.
And then you have apologists like Peterson writing articles about how the Trinity and the Mormon “godhead” concept are really the same thing and claiming that Catholic theologians are in agreement with LDS theology in the matter.
