Where do we get the idea that contraception is bad?

I saw this article today and I thought of this thread: 🙂

ncregister.com/daily-news/is-it-temporary-inattention-or-willful-blindness-why-michael-coren-left-the/

Jimmy Akin talks about how it is not reasonable to expect every moral law to be explicit in Scripture.
Of course he would say its unreasonable, he has to leave room for the Church’s authority.

However, I think its very reasonable that everything be spelled out explicitly. After all, we are only talking about an eternity in hellfire among devils who employ tortures of the worst kinds on us, if we dont follow God’s laws.

Is it conceivable that God established the Church to continue his teaching ministry?

Jesus said: “He who hears you hears me”.
Is the teaching on contraception considered infallible?

Even though it is claimed that the Catholic Church cannot change anything, and it is claimed that it hasnt in 2000 years. So why are they condemning contraception now when Jesus/God never did? As far as Im aware, they cant just start making stuff up, right?
Contraception has always been condemned by the Catholic Church. There is a writing called the Didache which condemns it, and it was written in the first century.

See: Galileo.
That you responded with this answer shows you don’t know what you’re talking about and don’t know what really happened with Galileo. Why was the Church, including the Pope, funding his research into heliocentricity if the Church had already declared that the earth was flat? Why had the Church been discussing the possibility of heliocentricity for over a century before Galileo was born?

You would do well to educate yourself about this issue.
See: Dum Diversas.
Is Dum Diversas a declaration on faith and morals, that applies to all the faithful to believe it?
The poor judgement shown in handling the cases of abuse, and by poor judgement I mean flat out lying, that demonstrates the lack of discernment/truthfullness the Church has. If they cant get it right about that, how can they be trusted to get it right about nitpicky, less serious stuff like Contraception?
So if you can find any amount of people or leaders in any group who have committed sinful and/or stupid actions, that invalidates everything they believe and claim? You sure you want to set that as the standard?

How does wearing a condom during sex with one’s spouse “corrupt the conjugal act?”
Don’t answer my question with a question. Answer the question. How does eating cheesecake corrupt the appetite?

It would be unreasonable if God left us without anyone to guide us and let us know what is sinful and what is not. He could have chosen to have it all written down (which you demand He do), or He could choose to leave an institution that He would protect from teaching error (which He actually chose to do).

I don’t see where you can even claim that it is unreasonable to build a Church with authority. Your claim of unreasonable falls on its face simply by the fact that this thread exists. This thread exists to ask WHY the Church has declared contraception immoral, but the question of IF the Church considers it immoral is not debated. ALL people who take even a passing amount of attention know the Church’s teaching on this. So people who are interested in learning God’s will can easily know it by listening to the entity He left with authority.

The same way contraceptive sex supposedly corrupts the conjugal act.

But that writng is not Jesus or God. 🤷

I think you are reading up on history revisionism rather than the real historical facts.

I understand that it is.

Sure lets set that standard, only if that group claims to be the ultimate moral authority on earth and is infallible in its discernment of morality. And only if that group does nothing to distance itself from those who have committed the sinful and/or stupid actions.

Jesus only wrote one thing, and nobody recorded what it was. For that matter, you just have to take the church’s word for it on that as well.

Your logic makes no sense.

Thank you for your honesty. So the Church just made up the idea, it doesnt come directly from God.

This is a fine demonstration of faulty logic. There no logical way this can be concluded from the post being commented on.

Either God said it, or he did not. It has not been demonstrated during the duration of this entire thread where God has adressed contraception directly.

The poster said I will just have to take the Church’s word for it, which means the Church came up with the idea, not God. 🤷

This is nonsense, and a classic non-sequitur.

As noted earlier, you place great store that Jesus did not in his words rule out a number of acts, and thus you conclude they are fine. Yet when Jesus did use his own words to establish a Church and give it a teaching role, you either:
  • deny that’s the case; or
  • assert Jesus established a wayward Church!
Which is it?
