Where do you go to Mass?

This thread was started as a poll to see where posters go to Mass. Almost all of the posters on this thread have taken this thread way off topic. If you want to push your anti-SSPX agenda - PUSH IT ON YOUR OWN THREAD!!!

Back to the OP’s question, we attend a diocesan approved TLM. Occassionally, we will attend our local SSPX Chapel or an independent Chapel. When traveling, we mostly attend FSSP Masses but sometimes SSPX or diocesan TLM’s. We do not attend the NO.

I’m sorry, but I’m pretty ingnorant to all these names. Would anybody mind explaining what those mean? SSPX and EF, OF???

Not to nit-pick, but it seems to me the options in the poll are a bit strange. For one thing, there is a button for “Eastern Orthodox” but nothing for Eastern/Oriental Churches in union with Rome. The second is that there are buttons for both the FSSP and ICRSS even though they are, (to my knowledge, at least) not “in competition” with one another and rarely (if at all) overlap the same territory.
FSSP and ICRSS have a healthy rivalry, I think. They have a rivalry like the Dominicans and the Franciscans have a rivalry. It’s mostly just in good fun. 🙂 Though, yeah, they don’t overlap anywhere as far as I know. But the idea wasn’t to find out anything about who is competing with whom, but rater to find out if it’s possible where all the questions might be coming from here on the forum.

Sorry, I should’ve just put Eastern Churches. I also should’ve done a Category for OF order Masses. But click “other” and again, sorry. :o

SSPX - Society of St. Pius X
EF - Extraordinary Form (Traditional Latin Mass)
OF - Ordinary Form (Novus Ordo Mass)
FSSP - Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter

SSPX…Society of Saint Pius X.

EF…the extraordinary form of Mass. The Latin Mass. A beautiful spiritual Mass with great reverence for the Eucharist and God.

OF…the ordinary form of Mass (Novus Ordo in Latin)…ie… the vulgate or language that is spoken in the area it is said. No less reverent with the same Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

SSPX is very critical of the FSSP as being priests that left SSPX to maintain their relationship with the Vatican. SSPX considers FSSP Masses to be no different than the Novus Ordo. I have requested…received and read the SSPX literature on this.

I’m guessing then that I either go to an EF or OF?
It’s in english, so I don’t know where that leaves me. I had no idea there were so many types of catholics.:o

Jacafamala’s post was not about the SSPX vs the FSSP. Try reading a little slower. And you are still off topic. You seem to have a personal bias against the SSPX . That’s fine, start your own thread to hash it out.

If it’s in English and the priest faces the people as he leads them…then it’s Novus Ordo. It is the Mass that is most common throughout the world. The Latin Mass is different in many ways…but no more or less efficacious in worshiping God.

The OF would be the ordinary form, or the Novus Ordo, or the Mass of Paul VI. 🙂

If it is in english, you go to the OF. If you went to the EF, you would know. The use of EF and OF is realtively new. That is probably why you are not familiar with it.

Seems like there is more than enough biases to go around on this one.

Nothing in my posts on this thread shows bias (except that I favor the TLM over the NO). Spn82756’s posts clearly do and they are off topic. Lately, people with anti-SSPX agendas seem to be taking most threads off topic, even when there was no mention fo the SSPX prior to their own comments.

Almost all Catholic parishes in the US offer only the OF Mass. It’s the Mass that most of us are familiar with.

There are really only two types of Catholics - Eastern and Latin. But there are many ways of celebrating Mass and many groups to facilitate these differences. They are sometime subtle differences. I am pretty sure I couldn’t tell the difference, for example between a FSSP and a ICRSS Mass. As someone mentioned, there isn’t always overlap so you are unlikely to see all of these “choices” in your diocese.

I am in Texas too and we have one EF Mass for the entire diocese each Sunday. Needless to say, most Catholics are unable to experience it. We don’t have the FSSP or the ICRSS but we do have the SSPX and the SSPV but are enjoined against going there.

So, no traditional Mass for me. I just have the OF which luckily is very reverent in my parish.

OTOH, we do have Anglican Use nearby. (Just to mix it up) 😉

In 2009, I attended OF and EF. FSSP, Cantius, other diocese, three NO churches, and twice SSPX. Daily when time permits OF.

Same Mass everywhere.

That is quite misleading because I participated to OF masses in Latin with the priest was celebrating Ad Orientem. I think the best way is to compare both masses side by side. There is this web site that has the info.

This link is probably easier to use. 👍

I stand corrected in this particular case.🙂

The Institute of Christ the King run an oratory on Milwaukee’s southside. That’s where I go. Its a great church with a wonderful priest.

SSPX is a natural target because of its statements about “Traditional” Catholicism and its perceived rejection of some traditions of the Church. It comes with the territory, it is like a Catholic posting on CARM. However, it can be disruptive when we keep falling in the same trap of diverting threads just to make the same point over and over.

I attend the OF every Sunday and occasional weekdays.

My parish has one EF mass each month on the first Friday. I attended it once and was impressed not only with the beauty of the mass, but also with our young servers’ ease with and knowledge of serving at this mass. OTOH, I prefer the OF only because I can fully bring my mind to my participation in the mass, which I can’t do when I attend a mass in a language other than English.
