I was wondering how many of you went to church at you town’s Catholic church, and how many chose a different parish. If you chose another parish than the one you live in…why???

I usually disagree with people who don’t go to their home parish for whatever reason… but I LIKE your story ! God has His ways of getting things done with us. Isn’t He GREAT ?I was ready to swim the Tiber and because we’re within equal distance of a few churches, frankly went parish-shopping.
‘My’ parish church seemed cold, huge, and impersonal (and now that I know about the Mass, waaaay too unorthodox).
The second parish had my favorite church, but no parking, so reluctantly I kept looking.
A third parish seemed better. For no good reason I cried the first time I went there, so I figured, ‘this is it.’
But when it came time to enter RCIA, they acted like I was an annoyance.
Back to the second parish with my fave church and no parking. I phoned their RCIA director and almost the instant I hung up after our conversation, their parish priest called me and just about lassooed me to come and meet with him.
He really, really wanted us there.
We entered that RCIA program and for a small parish we had one of the biggest groups of converts that year.
Wow, thank you for the reality check.I attend my geographic parish and am happy to have it because the next parish with a regular Sunday Mass is 7 hours away by car (depending on the weather and condition of the road).
Starting in January, we will probably be without Mass at least one Sunday a month since our pastor will be ministering in another parish 3-4 hours away. At least 3 times a year we will be without Mass for 2-3 weeks in a row when he flies to a third community to minister there for a couple of weeks at a time.
my fiance and i go to a parish about 30 minutes away… so about two towns over lol. we go to that one because we don’t like the one near my house (VERY modern! No kneelers!), and the next closest church to us is onbase, but I don’t really care for the military church (he is USAF)… so I church hopped at bit, and found a nice small church.I was wondering how many of you went to church at you town’s Catholic church, and how many chose a different parish. Until I came to this community, I usually worshipped at the military parish on whatever Base we were posted. The only time I chose a parish other than my military parish was at the posting before we came here: we lived on Base but there was a “Catholic Faith Community” about 20 minutes away and I opted to go there with my children because I could worship in my mother tongue. We had no church, we gathered for Mass and the sacraments at the French School/Community Centre and used the auditorium for the purpose. I have to admit that in the summer when I wasn’t scheduled to read I did parish hop just to see what else there was around but I was always happy to go back ‘home’ to my Community.I live in a big city and there are a number of parishes close to where I live. I go to mine because it was the one I kind of randomly chose to visit before I was Catholic and I loved it there, so I just kept going. It isn’t technically my home parish, but is really less than a mile farther. I’m pretty much on the boundary of four parishes. Cross the street to the north and I’d be in a different one, cross the street to the east, another one, cross the street to the east and go down less than a block and I’d be in the one I go too.
I don’t think it’s a problem to find a Catholic church that you feel comfortable in and nutured in. While the sacrifice of the Mass is holy and the same everywhere, the priest, people, music, etc. is not and different people need different types of communities to add to their faith-building.Is it wrong for me to go to a couple of the other churches in the area and decide which one fits us best?
Maybe I’m just thinking too much. But I really want to belong to a church where we are welcomed, made to feel like part of the family, and where my faith is nurtured. I am at a point where I have considered going to a non-Catholic church simply because there are so many welcoming and familial type aspects of it. But I don’t want to leave my Catholic faith.
Sorry, I don’t mean to hijack the thread, but perhaps others who go to a church that isn’t their closest one have felt the same way I have.

So true.It is about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, when Heaven touches Earth so that we may receive the grace of the Son. In that respect all parishes are united and equal.
No matter what parish we are in, If we could see what is really going on on the altar at the Consecration, we would die out of love.
