Does God live on the moon? on a planet? in a star system? exactly where is his throne?

What do LDS think? Muslims? Jehovah’s Witnesses? Protestants? Catholics?

From the Catholic POV, God created space and God created time. He lives in neither one, but outside of both, where He dwelled before He created them.

Of course, when you talk about “outside of space and time”, you can’t use words like “where” and “when”. 🙂

Paul

Perhaps it is easier to ask “Where is God not?”

There is an expression, “God is everywhere”. While this makes a good bumper sticker its not very good theology. Does God exist in an evil action? The answer is obviously no because God cannot exist in something contrary to His own nature or essence. That would be like me like being alive and dead at the same time. God does exist, no matter how small it might be, in those who do evil but never in their evil actions. All men desire the good and that good is of God. Some desire what they think appears to be the good but none the less they have a desire towards good, either real or pseudo.

God exists in all except mal intent, means and ends.

God exists in the iron of the earth but not in the desire to turn that iron into weapons. God exists in the desire to bring art to the world but not the pornography that spreads with it. God exists in the desire for men to protect others but not in the means of murder.

I would disagree. Since God is One and there is nothing that exists outside of God, then God is in every action (and every action is in God). I just think it is easier to see God in what we define as good acts.

Perhaps that is why God chose to become man and die for the forgiveness of sin?

Evil exists outside of God for evil is the result of free choice. An evil act is the conscience or unconscienceis rejection of God and his will. SInce God does not interfere in human choice, unless we choose to ask Him for His help and graces, or seek the good He desires as we all inately do, then our actions will not posses the presence of God. God may be present in the devil for He created him but that does not mean that God is present in the actions of the devil and his fredom of choice to do wrong.

God cannot be present in abortion or murder. God cannot be present in rape or torture. God can not be in actions that in of themselves reject God.

Why not? Aren’t you limiting God’s ability by this supposition?

Didn’t God create the murderer, as well as the victim? Isn’t he present in both individuals? Wasn’t God present in Esau? Did He not harden Pharoah’s heart? Does Isaiah not say that God is the creator of light and darkness, of good and evil?

Can there really be any componenet of existance/reality that can exist outside of God?

Catholic Here!
God dwells in the grace that we seek.
Sorry this answer is so short.

As I stated above; God does exist in all humanity as well as even in Satan himself. However God cannot exist in the actions of man who seek something other than the good. This does not mean that God does not exist in the men themselves but merely the actions of evil and sin that are a direct rejection of God.

There is another expression “God created everything”. This again is a nice bumper sticker but not very good theology. Does that mean that God created evil? Evil is the negative result of freedom of choice. Evil is created when we succumb to temptation and reject God’s will. God can not be in an action that is a rejection of Him.

If God created all then He created the internet and not Al Gore. If God created evil ,and nothing can be outside of God, then God is evil. If God is evil and nothing can exist outside of God then the world and creation are evil. If the world and creation are evil than humanity is evil.

Evil is the absence of good (God), just as cold is the absence of heat, and dark is the absence of light. maybe ‘where’ is the wrong word…

God’s existence transcends our own. Transcendance is not a place but a state of being. God exists higher than we do. In trying to establish where God is, I think we should be very careful to not assert that everythig is some part of God. Certainly everything that happens is done under the direct observation of God but to assert that everything is in some way part of God strays perilously close to pantheism and heterodox philosophy.

I’m sure you search for better understanding of Our Maker, and that is commendable. But I think you may be on thin ice.

Those bumber stickers are true without reservation. God IS EVERYWHERE, and God DID create EVERYTHING.

There is NOTHING outside of God’s presence, per se. He is even ‘present’ in Hell. I think we should be careful in suggesting that there can be things that because they are evil, they are AWAY from God. Or the suggestion that if He is ‘present in something evil’ then He could be responsible in some way FOR that evil.

He may not personally have created the internet, but He supplied the knowhow and materials to make it. Evil happens as an action and as such is in FULL VIEW of God. This is why ‘evil sneaks around’ in all its forms. There is no suggestion that because He “hates sin” then He turns His Holy Personage from it so that He does not know the details of that sin. He pays the “wages of sin,” not out of ignorance or guesswork, the same way He rewards “good works.” By knowing the details!

“Not a sparrow falls from the sky without His say so” means He “sees” everything!

An interesting discussion. I have looked at the responses, and the following seems to be the summary of where people think that God lives:
  1. Outside of space and time
  2. Everywhere
  3. In every action
  4. Only in good actions
  5. In the grace that we seek
  6. In all humanity
  7. In a street with no name
  8. In a transcendence of being
  9. In everything
It will perhaps be instructive to compare that with what the scriptures say about where God lives. Jesus gave us some clues when He said: “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God” (John 20:17). According to the descriptions given above of where God lives, then Jesus must have ascended into “everywhere;” “outside of space and time;” “in every action;” “only in good actions;” “in the grace that we seek;” “into all humanity;” “in a street with no name;” “into a transcendence of being;” or “into everything”. Wow! Pretty weird places to “ascend” into. Perhaps the next scripture will be more helpful:

John 14:

2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

So by your definitions Jesus went to “prepare a place for us” everywhere; outside of space and time; in every action; only in good actions; in the grace that we seek; into all humanity; in a street with no name; into a transcendence of being; or into everything. That sounds even more weird! I am not sure if I want to go there now!

I hear this a lot. But I don’t take it for granted that this is the case. To say that it is the absence of good is to say evil only requires inaction. This may be true of many evil acts, but certainly not all. It would make as much sense, logically, to say good is the absence of evil. Or at a minimum, if one is going to differentiate between the act and the actor, by saying GOd created the actor but is not in the evil act, then I think we have to say that He is also absent from the good act, even though we can agree he created the actor.

Let me ask you a question, if you, as a christian, walked onto any street and ended up in a block where there were a street gang of thuds hanging around , whould you see God there?
Would you hear Him?

well . . . there is a possibility that the house, is on a street.

😉 😃

When I read your list its actually not so weird. God may have a particular house, on a particular street. But I doubt He suffers from agrophobia, I bet He likes to get out. And its likely He gets around. In fact I bet you can find evidence of Him being all over.

dessert, I have a answer to your question, but I will hold off, until Zerinus answers.

Dear Daniel,

Whatever you named were a place in this universe. The place is contraint by both space and time. God cannot be constraint by space and time. If your question was “where is God?”, then your question would be more relevant. God is everywhere and in everytime more than you can imagine. You can have 1 billion people having 1 billion answers, and they are all correct.
