Where does the Bible say that Jesus is God? (Split)

Interesting. Then what use is the Gospel of John if his claims are spurious? And if John is spurious, then why is Scripture to be trusted at all? I would say if any of it is spurious or questionable, then the entirety would have to be discarded, at least as inerrant or the written word of God. Do you have any basis for discarding John’s Gospel and the claims Jesus makes in it?

Also, what of the Trinitarian baptism formula used in Matthew?

That is neither here nor there, my friend. If every Catholic in the world used the Lord’s name in vain, the teaching authority of the Catholic Church itself (the collective teaching office of bishops and the pope known as the ‘magisterium’) would never teach that it were acceptable.

Now, the point was that nowhere in Scripture is the Lord’s name used in vain. Nowhere. Ever. Jesus (who we can hopefully both agree is the focal point of the Gospels) does not correct or rebuke Thomas for his utterance. We all know Jesus corrects His disciples often, and so why would He not rebuke Thomas for disobeying the Decalogue? Simple: because Thomas was not disobeying the Decalogue. He was proclaiming that Jesus was both his Lord and his God.

Again, as with many other posts, you have failed to address the issues adequately. I am beginning to believe that you have no desire to actually learn, but rather argue, in which case I am inclined to move from responding/praying, to simply praying.

May the Lord bring you into the fullness of His Truth and Love 🙂
Can I ask a question here? Can someone give me an example of using God’s name in vain.

Catholic Catechism
II. Taking the Name of the Lord in Vain
2150 The second commandment forbids false oaths. Taking an oath or swearing is to take God as witness to what one affirms. It is to invoke the divine truthfulness as a pledge of one’s own truthfulness. An oath engages the Lord’s name. "You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve him, and swear by his name."81
2151 Rejection of false oaths is a duty toward God. As Creator and Lord, God is the norm of all truth. Human speech is either in accord with or in opposition to God who is Truth itself. When it is truthful and legitimate, an oath highlights the relationship of human speech with God’s truth. A false oath calls on God to be witness to a lie.
2152 A person commits perjury when he makes a promise under oath with no intention of keeping it, or when after promising on oath he does not keep it. Perjury is a grave lack of respect for the Lord of all speech. Pledging oneself by oath to commit an evil deed is contrary to the holiness of the divine name.
2153 In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus explained the second commandment: "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not swear at all… Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one."82 Jesus teaches that every oath involves a reference to God and that God’s presence and his truth must be honored in all speech. Discretion in calling upon God is allied with a respectful awareness of his presence, which all our assertions either witness to or mock.
2154 Following St. Paul,83 The tradition of the Church has understood Jesus’ words as not excluding oaths made for grave and right reasons (for example, in court). "An oath, that is the invocation of the divine name as a witness to truth, cannot be taken unless in truth, in judgment, and in justice."84
2155 The holiness of the divine name demands that we neither use it for trivial matters, nor take an oath which on the basis of the circumstances could be interpreted as approval of an authority unjustly requiring it. When an oath is required by illegitimate civil authorities, it may be refused. It must be refused when it is required for purposes contrary to the dignity of persons or to ecclesial communion.

I propose that we also look at the definition of the word “name.”
Notice below, that Three Persons are mentioned, yet “name” is singular.

Matthew 28:19
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”

From dictionary:

NAME
“Scripture places great emphasis on a person’s name, as well as the naming or renaming of individuals and places (Gen 2:23; 4:1, 25; 5:29; 11:9; 17:5; Matt 16:18). …

“The name of God was one of power and majesty, a source of hope and assurance of salvation (cf. Ps 54:3; 72:19; 124:8; 148:13). Tο know thy name of the Lord, Yahweh, is to encounter the Lord himself and to know him as he is….

“What is new, however, is the idea that the name of Jesus Christ is equal in holiness and power to the name of God. Since Jesus is divine, his name is divine, for he is Lord and Savior. Only in Jesus’s name may salvation be found (Acts 4:12).

"The use of the name of Jesus gives power to heal and perform miracles (Mark 16:17; Acts 3:6), to forgive sins (Luke 24:47; Acts 10:43), to exorcise (Luke 10:17), and to baptize (Acts 2:38; 1 Cor 6:11). Jesus’s name is above every other name: “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil 2:9—I1; cf. Eph 1:21). To proclaim the Gospel is to preach the name of Jesus (Acts 5:40; 8:12; 9:15). Ultimately, the entire activity of the Church is undertaken in Jesus’s name, because his name brings life to all who call upon it iii faith (John 20:31; 1 John 5:13). 'The believer is thus called upon to do all things in Christ’s name (Col 3:17), even if doing so provokes the opposition and persecution of the world (Mark 13:13; Acts 5:41; 1 Pet 4:14-16).”

Catholic Bible Dictionary, by Scott Hahn, Doubleday Press, page 638-639, entry “Name”

End Quote.

Name is singular because the essence in One. There is One God, yet each Person, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all partake in that One Divine Essence.

I will send more later.

But where does it say Christ was God? I’m a little confused.
You make some good points. But we are to follow Christ doing His Fathers will as Jesus Himselg always said, indicating he was the Son and not God . He was “like” God in everything that he said and done because He came to these the not to do His will, but the will of His Father, this clearly pointing out they were 2 seperate people. -]Also how can a person be purged of din after death? The body is dead and cannot sin anymore. All sins are forgiven at death because that was what God said. The wages of sin is death./-]

The Doctrine of the Trinity does not say
3=1.
Yes, Jesus the Son, and the Father are distinct Persons. ( I wouldn’t use your terminology “separate” because they are not “separated.” They are united more closely than you could be with a best friend, your wife, or your child.)

Yet, each partakes in the One Divine Nature. There are three Persons, but only One Divine Nature. Multiple gods could not be all powerful. There is only One God, in which there is Three Persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

I am making a web page for you.
So, far I have this.

Why would God come to earth? Simple. To become man and die for man. If Jesus were not God, his death on the cross would have been useless, because no man or any creature is capable of atoning for offenses against an infinitely good and great God. To atone for an infinite offense against God (which is what happens when you offend God), you require a sacrifice of infinite value. If Jesus were a mere man, this would be impossible, even if he were sinless because if he were just a mere creature, he would be finite. He had to be God for his sacrifice to be of any value.

In case anyone is interested in what I have so far, or if you are looking for a cure for your insomnia, please consider the following :

Jesus is Worthy of Adoration, or Worship

Luke 19:38-40
“ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’ … ‘if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.’ ”

Philippians 2:9-11
“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Isaiah 45:23-24
“By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.’ 24 “Only in the Lord, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength”

Revelation 19:9-10
Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who have been called to the wedding feast of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These words are true; they come from God.”

**I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Don‘t! I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brothers who bear witness to Jesus. Worship God. Witness to Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” **

Jesus is Worshipped

We read in Matthew and John how the Apostles worshipped Jesus. The Greek word that is used for worship is “Proskynéō.” However, when that same Greek word is used in Acts and Revelation we are told that only God is to be worshipped (Greek “Proskynéō”.)

Matthew 14:28-33
“And Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water.’ He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, ‘Lord, save me.’ 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, ‘O man of little faith, why did you doubt?’ And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.’ ”

John 9:35-39
“Jesus heard that they had cast him (the man born blind, and now cured)
out, and having found him he said, ‘Do you believe in the Son of man?’ He answered, ‘And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?’ Jesus said to him, ‘You have seen him, and it is he who speaks to you.’ He said, ‘Lord, I believe’; and he worshiped him. Jesus said, ‘For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind.’ ”

Acts 10:25-26
“When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter lifted him up, saying, ‘Stand up; I too am a man.’ ”

Revelation 19:9 -10
“And the angel said to me, ‘Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’ And he said to me, ‘These are true words of God.’ Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, ‘You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.’ For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Revelation 22:8-9
“I John am he who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me; but he said to me, ‘You must not do that!’ ”

See passages in Greek
The same Greek word is used for worship. It is “Proskynéō.”

If God the Son is praying to God the Father, asking Him to take away this cup, how can there be only one God? You have God the Son asking God the Father to do something. If God the Son was God, could not God the Son do it all by Himself? Why would God the Son need to pray to God the Father if they were one and the same God?

Your question has already been answered in post 43, 48 and 118. Simply Jesus is the second person of the Blessed Trinity and He has two natures God and human. Once again it isn’t “if God the son was God” it is “the Son is God”.

Post 126 contains where Jesus said He is God and where others acknowledge He is God.

That is an inaccurate translation. Simple English for the … If you think like a Jew you would know that Jesus is intentionally using the present tense and intentionally referencing a name of God. They took up stones against him because what he said was to them blasphemy. Blasphemy is a sacrilege of God or His Name or His Character. It is not just merely saying “well I lived before Abraham”, all the Jews would do would be to laugh and leave, not stone him. But did Jesus say no no no you misunderstand I will put this into simple English for you “I was alive before Abraham was born”.
I couldn’t agree with you more. Besides, why would God pray to Himself? To deliberately confuse them?

So you agree that it is an inaccurate translation.

Your question has been answered many times through this thread. Post 129 states this as well.

Why do you ask a question that has been answered?

Already answered ad nauseam on this thread alone.

Same God. Two different Persons. That’s how he can pray to the Father.
Same Person: Jesus. Two natures. True God and True Man. That’s how he can speak of his will and the Father’s will.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Besides, why would God pray to Himself? To deliberately confuse them?
The answer remains the same.

Same God. Two different Persons. That’s why the Son can pray to the Father.
Same Person in Jesus. Two natures. That’s how the man Jesus can pray to the Father.

Let’s present it again.
The Father IS God.
The Son IS God.
The Holy Spirit IS God.

The Father IS NOT the Son.
The Son IS NOT the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit IS NOT the Father.

This is the only reasonable explanation that can be drawn from the Scriptures.

Ok. Here is the next section I finished for my web page. It has some relevance to Jesus being “I AM”

Jesus is Eternal. He precedes creation. He is begotten not made.

**John 1:1 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being … And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” NAS– **

Colossians 1:15-17
“He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation; 16 for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
**
[Please not that the term “first-born” is a title with its own specialized meaning. It is not primarily a chronological counter. See http://www.defendingthebride.com/ma4/until.html#firstborn”]Firstborn.]**

John 17:5
“and now, Father, glorify thou me in thy own presence with the glory which I had with thee before the world was made.”

Hebrews 1:2

**“a son … through whom he created the universe” **

The theme of God as Creator in the Old T. below is redirected to God the Son in the New Testament

Isaiah 44:24
“Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who stretched out the heavens alone, who spread out the earth—Who was with me?”

1 Corinthians 8:6

**“yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.”

**
A passage in Psalm 102 that is directed to God in the Old Testament, is redirected to God the Son.

Psalm 102:24-26
“O my God … Of old you laid the earth’s foundations; the heavens are the work of your hands.”

Hebrews 1:8-10 – “But of the Son He says, ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever’ … ‘You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands’ ” NAS

Titles of God Applied to Jesus

Savior
Isaiah 43:11
“I, I am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior.”

Acts 4:10-12
“ … be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified … 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Alpha and the Omega
Catholic Answers states :

catholic.com/library/Divinity_of_Chirst.asp

**Also significant are passages that apply the title “the First and the Last” to Jesus. This is one of the Old Testament titles of Yahweh: “Thus says Yahweh, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, Yahweh of armies: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; besides me there is no god’ ” ****(Is. 44:6; cf. 41:4, 48:12).

This title is directly applied to Jesus three times in the book of Revelation: “When I saw him [Christ], I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand upon me, saying, ‘Fear not, I am the First and the Last’” ****(Rev. 1:17). “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the First and the Last, who died and came to life’ ” ****(Rev. 2:8). “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense, to repay every one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the beginning and the end” ****(Rev. 22:12–13).

This last quote is especially significant since it applies to Jesus the parallel title “the Alpha and the Omega,” which Revelation earlier applied to the Lord God: “ ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” ****(Rev. 1:8)." End Quote

I’m sorry but Jesus and God are two seperate entities Jesus was with God when he created the world That is why He always referred to Him as Father. He never came from Heaven to do His will, but His Fathers. He was the word of God as he had been with Him for eons and knows Him better than anyone. That is why it was a sacrifice to God. Symbolizing His greatest love for mankind by sacrificing His (and here it comes) ONLY begotten Son for man’s salvation.

Please show me where it states that Jesus was with God when He created the world so that is why He calls Him Father???

Show me scripture that verifies these claims. Jesus said that He and the Father are one not seperate entities. Jesus uses the same name as God told Abraham what His name was “I AM” that is why they tried to stone Him because they understood He was claiming to be God.

Does any of this appear in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, or Luke? Why not?
Dear Tom,

I am going to add a special section on my web page about how the first three Gospels proclaimed the Divinity of Jesus, but in a different way. I hope this helps. This is what I got so far:
Code:
    **Power
**
** Mark 6:56
“Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak; and as many as touched it were healed.”**
**Where do the Gospels say that Jesus is God?

**
**When we see the deeper meaning of what we are reading we see that Jesus is saying with His actions that He is God on just about every page of the Gospels. Every miracle is a testimony to His Divinity. Miracles by definition are beyond scientific explanation. Only God can perform miracles. Because He performs His miracles, and plethora of them, under His own power, and authority, and in His own Name He must be God.

**
**This is unlike the Apostles who perform miracles not in their own name, but in the Name of Jesus.

**
** Acts 4:9-10
“ … if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a cripple, by what means this man has been healed, be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christof Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by him this man is standing before you well.”

**
**Just as it is Jesus working the miracle through Apostles, it is also Jesus working through the validly ordained priest the effects of the Sacraments. And so, in the Sacrament of Confession the priest says,

**
**“I absolve (forgive) you.”

**

**It is not to be understood as …

**
**“I (priest Peter) absolve you”

**

**as that would not bring forgiveness. Rather, it is

**
“I (persona Christi, in the person, and in the power, and in the name of Jesus Christ) absolve you.”
**
**

What’s happening on earth is also happening in heaven. Or as I prefer to think of the Mass, what is happening in heaven is also happening on earth. (Sacrament of Penance, John 20:21-23.)
The miracles are too numerous to list here, but the following examples are of special interest.

Code:
**The greatest miracle is the Resurrection which is recorded in each of the Gospels.**
     **Matthew 28:9
    Mark 16:9-16
    Luke 24:1-34

** “And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care if we perish?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?” 41 And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?” Cf. Matthew 8:24-27, Luke 8:24-25

**Jesus has power over demons. ****

Matthew 8:28-34
“And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” 30 Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine.” 32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him (Jesus), they begged him to leave their neighborhood.”

** To accept Jesus means to put Him first in our lives. If we are unwilling to sacrifice living a life of sin, we will not be able to accept Him.

**Jesus forgives Sins
**
Code:
**The Pharisees are outraged when Jesus claims to forgive a man’s sins. To them that must be blasphemy because only God can forgive sins. Then to prove that Jesus can forgive sins, because He is God the Son, he performs a miraculous healing.**

     ** Mark 2:5-12
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there asking themselves, “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive sins?”Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they were thinking to themselves, so he said, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts? ... But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth”— he said to the paralytic, “I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home.” He rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away in the sight of everyone.” Cf. Matthew 9:2; Luke 5:20; 7:48. **

Already answered ad nauseam on this thread alone.

Same God. Two different Persons. That’s how he can pray to the Father.
Same Person: Jesus. Two natures. True God and True Man. That’s how he can speak of his will and the Father’s will.
If God is One, would He not be one person? By saying that God is three different persons, are you not denying that God is one God and one person?
There is a prayer: Hear O Israel, the Lord thy God is One.
AFAIK, in the Old Testament, there is no prayer which says the Lord thy God is three separate persons.
