This church, this community which is the body of Christ, is what Jesus wants us to be a part of.(1) Did Jesus establish at the beginning of the church age one united, visible church that He expected everyone who is a child of His to align themselves with?
YES…
One:
Acts 4:32
“The community of believers was of one heart and mind…”
United:
1 Cor 1:10
“…agree in what you say, and that there be no divisions among you”
Visible:
John 17:20-23
“that the world may know … that they may see”
Matt 18:17
“… tell it to the church …”
For all to align themselves with:
Matt 28:20
“teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…”
Exist today:(2) If yes, does this one united, visible church exist today and can it be readily recognized.
Jesus founded a church and said that “the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it”. (Matt 16:18)
Matt 28:20
" and lo, I will be with you always, until the close of the age."
John 14:16
“And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for ever,”
Recognizable: Apostolic succession
An office remained when the individual was gone.
Acts 1:20
“…and his bishoprick let another take.”
Timothy appointed by Paul…
1 Tim 1:18
“I entrust this charge to you, Timothy, my child,”
instructions to respect Timothy - FULL authority
1 Cor 4:17
“For this reason I am sending you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord; he will remind you of my ways in Christ (Jesus), just as I teach them everywhere in every church.”
Timothy asserting his authority to teach…
**2 Tim 1: 13-14 **
“Take as your norm the sound words that you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
Guard this rich trust with the help of the holy Spirit that dwells within us.”
Four generations of apostolic succession in this line.
2 Tim 2: 2
“And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will have the ability to teach others as well.”
How is this authority passed on?
2 Tim 1:6
“For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God 5 that you have through the imposition of my hands.”
1 Tim 4:14
“Do not neglect the gift you have, which was conferred on you through the prophetic word with the imposition of hands of the presbyterate.”
1 Tim 5:22
“Do not lay hands too readily on anyone, and do not share in another’s sins. Keep yourself pure.”
While the Orthodox Churches may hold to apostolic succession, they do not show the unity, even between the 15 or 16 Orthodox churches. Here the Catholics say “yes and we are it” while the Orthodox say “yes and we are it”. So immediately we have an issue with “readily recognized”. The Protestants of course say no.
For a number of reasons I have my doubts on this also.
Truth is our goal, what we seek.(3) If yes to #2, is it the will of God that all of His children be united to this one church.
Here I am quite sure that even if #2 is correct, #3 does not follow and I have my doubts whether that is the case.
Jesus called himself ‘truth’.
Who is to protect truth?
1 Tim 3:15
“the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.”
Eph 1:22-23
“…the church, which is his body”
Eph 5:23
Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body
YES we are to be a part of the body of Christ, ***His ***Church.
What of those that do not listen to the church?
Matt 18:17
“If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.”
It does not sound to me like we are to do anything but seek to be a part of the church that Jesus founded, protects, and teaches through.
Cheers!
