Hi,

Where do we find in scripture that God has a specific plan (or ordained will) for each of our individual lives?

Does that mean God has both an ordained will (specific plan?) and a permitted will?

When God says to “do the will of God” that that mean that God has an ordained will (or specific plan) for each of our lives? Or just to be morally responsible?|

Thank you for your help thinking through these things.

Off the top of my head:

Ephesians 4:11-12
Knox Bible (KNOX)
11 Some he has appointed to be apostles, others to be prophets, others to be evangelists, or pastors, or teachers. 12 They are to order the lives of the faithful, minister to their needs, build up the frame of Christ’s body,

Going way back, I guess I am asking this question, even with Adam and Eve… Is there such a calling that God specifically created a particular person to do at a particular time that no other person can do as God created us to do it? Like Moses or Abraham. They could have said no, but they didn’t. That isn’t my point though…

Other than the general ways of life; cultivate the ground to make food and be fruitful and multiply, and live a good moral life. Was it always in the mind of God even before the fall that we have a calling? It seems more like a protestant teaching? Or am i wrong?

Maybe some have bigger callings and some smaller or less known. Adam and Eve were also called to love God and Neighbor. Some verses on God’s will below.
Matthew 7:21
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
1 John 2:17
17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
Romans 12:2
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Mark 3:35
35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
John 7:17
17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

No one else can live your life. No one else has the soul that God designed for you from before time began. No one else has your thoughts and no one else walks the exact path that you walk during your life. It is more of a natural following of Divine law than it is a matter of scripture being fulfilled. The very circumstances of your life dictate God’s will for you, and you alone. You were born in no other time, and in no other place, and to no other parents. No one else has your circle of friends and your life experiences. It all follows from that, as well as the conscious act of your will that tells the Lord that you will try to obey Him.

And going back into the Old Testament, we find Jeremiah 29:11 –
“or I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
(RSV-CE)

This question and answer bring to mind a Scripture passage that always speaks to me of the depth of God’s abiding interest in each of us personally:

Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: better are you than many sparrows.—Matthew 10:29–31

I am short on time at the moment otherwise I’d find exactly the passage I am thinking of, but this passage given by po18guy is similar or part of it. In other words God has given us all specific gifts that we are expected to use to serve Him. Whether you have the gift to teach the gift of manual labor, we have a place in the Church to exercise that gift.

Jeremiah 1:5 is most frequently thought of:

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
And before you were born I consecrated you;
I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Thank you for all the replies. I guess I am thinking more into it beyond just the spiritual? gifts and or other gifts of teaching, preaching, healing, hospitality, etc. etc. I am wondering if there are specific places and tasks that God calls us to using such gifts.

Like Abraham and Moses and the Apostles, etc. were called to do specific things… it seems more in the old testament maybe, like Moses was created by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Does God have such a specific plan for each of us human beings in that way? Was this always so? Are there any other scriptures that would help me to better understand this thinking?

I guess so many people, including myself go about life trying to find purpose, other than living a moral life and loving God and neighbor the best we can in various ways. Like what is God’s plan for me specifically… if there is such a plan. Am I called and created to be a Priest or religious or be a missionary or a theology teacher or are these choices only by my own willing out of desire to follow God and His will for my life? I know that we need to be called by God to be a Priest or a religious, since it isn’t a right to become either as if we can choose it apart from God based on our own desires (one Brother mentioned something like that to me in the past).

Read 1 corinthians 12-14. We see there that we have each received a gift (charism) from the Holy Spirit. That charism is to be used for the building up of the Church. Compare this to the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30. We are given talents, which are our charisms, and we will called to account for what we have done with them to benefit the Master. We are called to return them with an increase, and not merely to keep them. If you ask, the Holy Spirit will reveal your charism to you. This revelation can come to oyu via many different means, but especially through prayer. I believe that the best place to pray in this regard is before Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. As well, you can speak with your Priest regarding your search.

But does that mean God has a laid out “before the world”? Moses-like plan for each of us (big or small?) that we each are called to follow?

Brian,
Jesus did say you are the light of the world and to let it shine before men.
Jesus also said that we are the leaven in the bread which makes the bread rise slowly. Meaning again we are in the world changing it slowly, but having an effect.

We are also in the communion of saints linked together for good or for bad. Being apart of it we will lift up those who are failing as members. Prayers and our works done for the love of God obtains for ourselves and other the kindom of heaven. We rely on one another and help one another in a very deep spiritual sense.

Now because of this, we are consciencously looking to do the will of God or should be. This is where a person looks at his or her talents, gifts, desires, limitations, and thru prayer, fits them into God’s plan in some special way. For one it may be single life, a married life, religious life. Then within that, there are other special calls to special works.

Many are called to give as their circumstances permit which is an unknown until it comes to birth.

If a person pointed themselves at improving their listening and praying in their spiritual life,
then God often makes it known to them what it is that they are to do for him. The first thing in the spiritual life is to tell him that you want exactly what he wants, no more and no less. That it is his will you wish to carry out, not your own wish. Even if it meant something not what you may have been thinking about. And whatever he choses, you will do.

Mother Teresa’s life is a ray of sunlight. All the saints have done this.

“Speak Lord, for you servant hears.” Samuel.

Just a thought.

Niecly put Brian,🙂

If by a specific plan your referencing “predestination”; then NO! …Impossible because it makes God out to be a liar and does not permit man to use the attributes given to man alone to FREELY choose to love or hate God.

Eccl.15:18 “Before man is life and death, good and evil, that which he shall choose shall be given him”

Isa.43 Verses 7 and 21: “every one who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made." AND the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.”

Because man alone can choose; this then becomes the primary goal and responsibility of our reason for existence. BUT it MUST be our choice.

God can’t deny Himself and how He Created us; nor can God prohibit man form making this self-choice.

IF on the other hand your asking are there specific conditions God demands [as is His Right as our Creator] to merit salvation? Then Yes; of course there are. AND not only are their BUT God will; because God Must pass Judgment upon each of us based not on just what we 1. Know 2. agree with 3. understand; Rather it will be on what God has MADE POSSIBLE for us to know; to understand and to accept.

That is why some catholics and {IMO} protestants can be at very great risk; insisting on what they choose to understand and accept; while having in very many cases; an opportunity presented to them by God to Know His singular truths.

So, I will wait for further clairification before commenting further.

Continued Blessings brian,
Pat /PJM
