Where in the Bible does it say to not eat meat on Friday's of Lent?

1 Timothy 4:1-3 says, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, AND COMMANDING TO ABSTAIN FROM MEATS, which GOD hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.”

Its quite clear.
Maybe it’s “clear” in your own mind, because you twist it to suit your understanding. Did you miss Gorgias’ sentence? “This passage isn’t talking about periodic abstinence, but permanent abstinence.” Catholics do not permanently abstain from meat. It is a holy discipline that takes place for eight days only during lent … not even close to your interpretation of that scripture!

Other faith denominations also abstain from meat on Fridays in lent, not just Catholics. McDonald’s knows this, and has offered a special value for fish sandwiches for the entire Lenten period. 😉 Our local grocers also have specials on fish during lent, so it is not reserved for Catholics only.

Anyone who has studied scripture knows that Paul was writing about Jews who insisted on the continuation of the Law of Moses which forbid eating pork.

Romans 14 says that we are supposed to honor each others decision to eat or abstain.

*Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. (Romans 14:3)

He who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. He also who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; while he who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. (Romans 14:6)*

Abstinence from meat is only required for Catholics who are bound by canon law. Abstinence from meat has nothing to do with non-Catholics, nothing to do with you, so please obey Romans 14:6 and leave us alone. Whether we eat or abstain, let’s just all give thanks to God, just like it says in the Bible.

Tim,

Thank you!! I was seeing if any of you got this. You did Tim and you are correct.

In Daniel 10:2-3, it says that Daniel was sad and didn’t eat meat nor wine for 3 weeks

On EWTN’s “Web of Faith” Saturday, the priests discussed the former practice of the Church NOT to give absolution for sins UNTIL the penitent had performed all of their penance, which could last for years! We are so very blessed to have these very small opportunities to unite with the entire Body of Christ, sacrificing in atonement for our sins (which is really not much of a sacrifice to abstain from meat one day per week).

As for being biblical, Jesus taught that unless we do penance, we will surely perish. It is a mandate, yet the Church does not impose great penances upon us that would be difficult to perform. Voluntarily, we may choose to do more, but this is the very minimum that is asked of us.
Jesus did not teach that we have to do penance. That is totally ‘works’ based. That more than likely comes from an outdated translation. Rather than ‘penance’ the correct word is repent (which does not require works).

Regarding not eating meat on Friday. It’s a tradition of the Catholic church and not mandated by Jesus.

Colossians 2:8 (NIV)

8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.

Also…

Colossians 2:16 (NIV)

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

The practice of not eating meat on Fridays (all Fridays) dates back to about the fourth century.
As did the doctrine of the Trinity and the canon of the bible among other things you use, well, mostly use in your faith. I assume you do not use the original 73 book canon which is fine with me and if you want to eat meat on Fridays please feel free. There are even those who have effectively adapted both of these into their faith and also no longer believe in the Trinity because it to was a fourth century invention.
It is written in some writings of that time that it was a practice, but does not say it was a sin. Anyone who says it is a sin would have to prove it by the Bible
How is this possible in say, the 3rd century, when the bible canon was extremely fluid?

Peace!!!

Umm… wait a minute… :hmmm:

So, all your bluster about “This says that people who command others (the Catholic church) to abstain from meats are false teachers!!” was really just some sort of test to see if we’d talk about the connection between Jewish abstinence from pork? Really? :doh2:

You were consciously deceiving us, so that you could determine whether we’d ignore your concerns and instead mention pork? :tsktsk:

I think you are mistaken. Here are a few links that record the word “penance” for that scripture. I presume non-C’s have reinvented the wheel and wording to avoid the obligation, since most non-C’s believe in OSAS - period. This is not our understanding. You are a guest here on CAF, so I request that you not attempt to teach us what we should believe, based on your literal views of scripture.

Even if the word was transcribed as “repent,” it is completely in line with John the Baptist’s ministry, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Mark 1:4. It means the penance of a change of life. This is the only worthy translation, no matter which word is used. Otherwise, as Jesus stated, “We will perish.”

I’m glad I passed your test. My request that you allow us to live our faith as we see fit however, stands.

One thing I have learned in 50 years of life on this planet is that people have to live their own lives. They can’t live our lives but have to live their own.You will not stand judgment for what we do. Please just let us live our own lives.

Colossians 2:16 and Romans 14 destroy the idea that we as Christians must participate in observance of days or abstinence of foods in order to say we’re doing greater than our brothers.

Friday abstinence from meat during Lent is a church discipline, a directive by church leaders, and its necessary observance falls under the general biblical command, “Obey your leaders and submit to them…” (Hebrew 13:17)

It is so easy to pull scriptures out of context with the whole of scripture, as non-Catholics have been taught to do – bible believing privately interpreted notions of truth. Let me share some scriptures that “destroy your ideas.”

When (not IF) you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But** when** you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:16-18).

“Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, ‘How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?’ Jesus answered, 'How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast” (Mark 2:18-20).

“While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off” (Acts 13:2-3)
.
“Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust” (Acts 14:23).

“This kind can only come out by prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:29)

Recall that the Ninivites fasted at the message of Jonah, as do all penitent people to open their hearts to full communion with God. Fasting is meritorious in situations like Jesus mentioned, when prayer alone is not able to cast out evil in a person. I am presently fasting for an errant daughter for whom I have prayed months and years. It’s time to get serious with fasting.

Sure it’s easy to pull Scripture out of context, but I’ve done no such thing.

The difference is that when I fast for the Lord, you’ll never know.

Was this meant to be a condescending slur?
We take seriously Our Lord’s recommendation not to appear as fasting in front of men. It is the first scripture reading to begin lent. Mt. 6:1

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.

I have many evangelical friends who fast for specific intentions. I admire them for it. They fast more than I do and I’m Catholic!

Scripture says that some demons can only be defeated through fasting and prayer.

👍 Very true. I hear it frequently on TV, since I watch quite a few evangelicals.

Tim, where’d you go???

I posted and then realized that I didn’t want to get into a private fight between you and dronald. :slapfight:

I though, for a moment, that you were an evangelical. I was replying to you as an evangelical. Then I remembered who you were and saw that you were a Carmelite.

I am going to go listen to Dr. Charles Stanley preach in a few weeks. He is a great preacher. I like listening to him.

His talk last week was very good, as he explained David’s predicament over the devastating loss at Siceleg and how he overcame it, listening to God’s direction.

There’s a lot of good ones out there, and it sometimes helps to weed out the incidental non-Catholic stuff for the sake of the truths that they teach. After all, they DO have the Holy Spirit and we can be good discerning money changers. 😉

I abstain from eating meat on Fridays of Lent because the Church tells me to and for penance as well but I have a friend, who asks me "where does it say in the Bible that you’re not suppose to eat meat on Friday’s?” and I don’t know what to answer her. Does it say anywhere in the Bible not to eat meat during Lent time?
It doesn’t. But tell your friend the Bible said Jesus
fasted forty days straight. She can do that instead. Lol
I once had a fundamentalist argue it and if following the
Bible literally makes him happy I suggested he
follow the Bible and just eat honey and locusts
like John the Baptist. Why argue, grasshopper?

I’m not trying to ‘teach’ anything. I’m merely pointing out a fact. Even the NAB, which I get from the Vatican website says ‘repent’ in Luke 13:3. From the NAB:

Luke 13:3
By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!

So please don’t say I’m trying to teach something different than what you believe. I’m pointing out what the NAB (again from the Vatican website) says!!!

You are correct in that John the Baptist did preach a baptism of* repentance*.
