Individual believers can come to SOME understanding of the scripture while reading it, but scripture tells us that there are things that are difficult to understand and can be misinterpreted (2 Peter 3:16). Therefore, scripture makes it clear that we must have a guide in order to properly understand scripture.

This is made evident in Acts 8:30-31. The eunuch needed to be properly instructed in order to understand scripture. Philip’s action? He doesn’t tell the eunuch “just pray to the holy Spirit and he’ll guide you”. He gets up into the chariot and teaches the eunuch himself because he has the authority to do so***.***

If we are to come to a full understanding of the truth we must follow the guides that the Lord has given us.

That may be true in many cases but not all. Arent there people who were never minister by someone human and have found the Lord. I think you underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit.

Yes Jimmy the spirit of God guides us in all truth. The Holy Spirit does not contradict itself. What im saying God gives those whom he wishes the gift of discerment for the purpose of identifing demonic spirits.
So God gave you the ability of discernment but he didn’t give other people the ability.

***Does simply believing that one has received the gift of discernment necessarily mean that one HAS received the gift of discernment? ***

I think that catholic4areason was getting at this but how do you know that you have the ability of discernment? Some people think they are correct but they really are wrong.

I’m asking because I’m wondering what you believe about it. I noticed that you didn’t answer so here it is again:

We all have Christ in us, but that does not mean that we are all being guided by the Holy Spirit. I can’t be 100% sure. That is why I don’t interpret the scriptures how I feel like interpreting it. I read it and try to think about it but I don’t come up with my own interpretation becuase I do not want to be in error. But when I read the scriptures, the interpretation of the church almost always makes perfect sense to me. You do not have anything to check your interpretation against for conradictions other than yourself. I have the interpretation of all the church fathers to support me. And I have the church to check my interetation against.
