Where’s the Media? L.A. Att’y Declares Many Abuse Accusations Against Catholic Priests Are ‘Entirely False’
In a stunning ten-page declaration recently submitted to the Los Angeles County Superior Court, veteran attorney Donald H. Steier stated that his investigations into claims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests have uncovered vast fraud and that his probes have revealed that many accusations are completely false.

Counselor Steier has played a role in over one hundred investigations involving Catholic clergy in Los Angeles.In his missive Mr. Steier relayed, “One retired F.B.I. agent who worked with me to investigate many claims in the Clergy Cases told me, in his opinion, about ONE-HALF of the claims made in the Clergy Cases were either entirely false or so greatly exaggerated that the truth would not have supported a prosecutable claim for childhood sexual abuse” (capital letters are his).

Things like this evoke emotional responses in ALL parties involved.

For a time, the secular culture and media appeared to be actually trying to paint all catholic priests as perverted sickos preying on children.

We must be sure that when the chance to retaliate in kind comes up we handle it much better! In ANY high profile issue where lawsuit money is at stake there will be fraud and attempts at fraud. The fact that some, even a good number of priests have been falsely accused doesn’t mean we should be less vigilant. We will always need to watch for wolves in shepherd’s clothing.

By all means call the cultural smear campaign for what it is. But not so much so as to imply there wasn’t a problem. There WAS (and in some place maybe still is).
 
I read about this on Fr. Zuhlsdorf’s blog. While I agree with manualman that we should not let our guard down, I also find this very encouraging. Most of our priests are good men. Many of our priests are good priests. A few are even holy men. Pray for our priests.
 
Yes, as manualman stated: there was a problem and in some cases there still is.

A dear family friend, home @ Christmas from grad. school in the midwest told of having coffee w/ his parish priest after Mass and became so uncomfortable because of the priests overtures and words he cut the visit short and vowed he will never be alone w/ the priest again. He told us he had never encounted anything like this. He got his degree from a Catholic U. & friendships w/ priests is not unusual for this student. Granted, the grad. student is not a minor but in this climate of suspicion this suggests this priest is brazen has serious issues and wonder if his bishop has him red-flagged.
In another case here the northwest newspapers reported a priest was found guilty in court for abuse even tho there was lots of hard evidence he did not live or visit this area during the time he was accused of violating the minor in a reform school. 20+ yrs earlier. The ‘seriousness of the charge’ was sufficient and it was at the height of the horrible scandal /expose.
 
The print media, cable and essentially all secular news in this country has been compromised for years. What was once an honorable profession is now the domain of 2 legged rats pushing a sentimentalist gay and atheist agenda followed closely by planted government and crony capitalist propaganda. We have become an atheist fascist nation ruled by organized anarchists.

The so called intellectuals in this country have abetted the deception and joined their Canadian and European comrades in the betrayal of humanity at large… it’s hard to miss all of the educated yet stupid people in our Catholic, government, commerce and educational institutions.

The United States of America is a moral cesspool and its leaders merely reflect the soul of its constituency. And unless this nation turns its moral compass on a dime, what’s around the bend ain’t pretty.

This stiff necked country did it to itself so don’t blame God… the Great Famine will be caused by man not God.

What is just as sad is that when a priest is accused, it will take several years before the case is heard. Those who are innocent are barred from doing priestly work for the duration of the case. And in at least some instances, are never returned to full ministry. In at least one case that I know about, the case was dismissed with prejudice against the accuser. (That this case may never even be referred to should another case against the person ever arise.)
Sad to say, even when a priest is cleared, many times there is always a cloud of doubt hanging over him and harming any ministry that priest does.
 
Catholic priests have a lower rate of abuse than the general population—and, in fact, a lower rate than nearly any other clergy (clergy in general have a comparatively low rate). Why?

Gee, maybe because 38% of all abuse, or roughly 2 out of 5 cases, is by (step)fathers, (step)grandfathers, or mothers’ boyfriends…all of whom are defined as not being celibate. Priests don’t have kids of their own to abuse, and often don’t have nearly as much privacy in which to abuse.

But no, of course, the abuse scandal raises issues with celibacy. Makes perfect sense, right?
