Which are your favorite male and female popular singers of yesteryear?

Reaching back a ways The Andrews Sisters made a great contribution to pop music with their tight harmonies and phrasing, and were the darlings of the WWII soldiers. Their pep and patrioticism helped American through one of her darkest periods.
 
Cass Elliot of The Mamas and the Papas had a good voice and might have gone on to a successful solo career if she hadn’t died young from a heart attack brought on by obesity.

Oh my gosh, I forgot about her! But she actually was in Merv Griffin’s audience.

I agree meltzerboy, where are those kinds of shows now?

And yes, Cass Elliot had a lovely voice. I just recently bought her solo cd. 🙂

I don’t know about Irishmom, but that happened to me only once. During a brief quiet moment in choir, my buddy next to me made me laugh. Loudly. Principal said, “you’re in here for what? Just go. You’re fine.”

I think Joan Baez has a beautiful voice.
Also Cat Stevens - not a beautiful voice but very expressive.
 
Mary Travers, of Peter, Paul and Mary.

Saw her years ago solo, at a very small outdoor performance on Long Island. Afterward, she came off the stage and was very nice to people she spoke with.

She had a lovely voice.

I met Mary Travers in a movie theater in New York. The movie was the exciting and violent “In the Line of Fire,” starring Clint Eastwood and John Malkovich as a psychopathic killer. She was there with her granddaughter. I found it odd, first of all, that the Mary Travers of so many peace protests and marches would be seeing such a film, and secondly, that she would be taking her granddaughter with her to see it. LOL

But it was a very good movie!

I like some of Cat Stevens’ songs and agree his voice is very expressive. He has recently returned to performing. Joan Baez has one of the MOST beautiful voices in popular music.

I’m not sure that I have a favorite, but I think that Louis Armstrong would be an excellent addition to our list. 🙂

I was going to mention Mama Cass. She owed her voice to her large frame, I’ve heard. Whenever she would crash diet, her voice suffered as a result. Like Streisand, whose doctors advised her against plastic surgery on her nose because, like it or not, that huge honker is partially responsible for her unique voice. A blessing and a curse for both ladies, if there ever was one.

Personally, I like the lonely, dusky voice of Astrud Gilberto. I could listen to her all day long.
