Waiting for the larger text RSV CE now.

…I was amused going through this whole thread. I basically became just as confused, and settled on the same Bible, the St. Benedict Press RSV-CE (1965, 1966) large print.

I basically came to this thread to see if my thinking on it was sound because I had already purchased it online. Seems like the RSV-CE is a trustable choice. I had been jumping around from the KJV, to the NKJV, to the NAB, to the NAB (revised NT&revised Psalms), to the NIV, and most recently, to the NRSV-CE the last three years. Print size had a lot to do with it as I gravitated to the Bibles that had the easiest print to read, and I like Christ’s words in red.

The only thing that really bothers me about the St. Benedict Press RSV-CE large print, is that it says on the title page “incorporated Apocrypha”. That’s just me though I guess.

I learned some good things in this thread. I had no idea the translations had all those differences, especially regarding the gender-related replaced words in the NRSV-CE which I had come to regard as my favorite. I’m glad I know that now.

At my Church it seems everybody uses different translations, and they really can’t tell you why they use that particular version other than, “It was a gift.”, “I like the way it reads.”, “It was my brother’s.”

I finally told myself to get serious, but I’ve read that the “large print” St Benedict RSV-CE really isn’t all that large. Let’s hope it’s big enough as I dislike taking out my contact lenses to read. Will this be my final settledon translation? I can’t really say. Hope it is. At least now I can make a more informed decision.

I like the Douay-Rheims version, and I read it with a copy of the NRSV beside for when I need clarification (does anyone know what “contumelious” means?

I like the Douay-Rheims for purely its style, as I started reading the KJV bible, and that kind of language seems “proper” for the bible for me.

Although one thing I notice is that how the two versions render the wisdom books of the old testament (which ultimately come from Hebrew) can be rather different at times. It gives me the feeling that I should be reading more than one translation for these passages, or maybe pick up some biblical hebrew.

Finally, I’ve been thinking about trying out the Knox bible for a while, because from what I’ve read, it was a translation that didn’t take into account previous translations, but offers a new spin on what the original languages meant. A lot of times, especially for the New Testament, you can tell the Douay-Rheims has influenced following translations.

Yes, I agree. Even though I’m mostly settled on the RSV-CE (which I’m glad some members like CalCatholic agree is a good choice.), I feel I’m missing out on something if I don’t have a Douay-Rheims to also reference. I read the D-R on my phone a lot, but I need a real paper version. The app is called ‘Catholic Droid’ for android. It’s free. Has something like 5 or 6 complete translations on it, amazing.

I do like the proper style of the D-R. That’s next on my list. But I just got a nice version of ‘Key of Heaven’, and I need to get a Catechism of the Catholic Church. I keep having to check one out from our local library. And there’s still the St. Faustina autobiography I have to get… etc… etc.
