After Sacred Scripture…

Jesus of Nazareth by Pope Benedict XVI
 
“The Seven Story Mountain” by Thomas Merton, “A Doctor At Calvary” by Pierre Barbet,M.D.,“The Railway Man” by Eric Lomax. Too many others to name.
 
Two books have helped me immeasurably in my journey: ( neither is what I would call light reading )
  1. Divine Intimacy : I have re-read this daily meditation several times over the years and still continue to gleen much from its pages.
  2. The Better Part by Father John Bartunek: this " Christ-centered resource for personal prayer " is exceptionally well written by an obviously holy priest and gives me solace and great hope in God and His mercy and love. In my opinion it is a must read for all Catholics !!!
 
Also there is a new book by George Weigel called Evangelical Catholicism. I cannot put this down. While still fairly traditional, Weigel points to a Catholicism that is in mission to the world and evangelizing the culture (by creating a counterculture). He suggests in what section that while the response of the counter-reformation Church was to say 'because the church teaches…" can now be best articulated with the phrase “because the Gospel reveals…” I thought that was a fascinating way of looking at it.

I checked on Baronius Press’s website and they say it is "Out of Stock " ; I hope they get some more copies soon. I also checked everywhere I could think of on the web, but nothing :eek: Perhaps though, that is a good sign ie. many have been ordering and reading it ! At any length, I pray it will be back in stock soon as it is a true inspiration to our faith.

How About books that are Biographies , Not Bible Type Books ?
 
Started to read “Fire Within” by Thomas Dubay. Very good so far!
 
This book really opened my eyes to the unknowable complexity of the universe (and the soul) and made it possible for my logical mind to understand that “the possibility of God” can not be doubted logically:

It’s a dense read, but you’ll come away with the knowledge that we’ve only begun to scratch the surface of knowing God’s universe. No matter how complex the model of physics or astronomy we create, that there’s an almost infinite universe of study left becomes frighteningly apparent.

This is the book I have - yes, the original that cost 85 cents! 😛

It is a beautiful classic that will enrich your spiritual life with a lot of practical advice on many spiritual subjects. If you want to try the on line version first, this is a pretty good sample.

St. Francis used to carry on his person a book by Dom Scupoli called The Spiritual Combat. He read a chapter each day, and when you examine St. Francis’s book and compare it with the Spiritual Combat, you’ll see a lot of similarities. He obviously lived the advice from this author. It made him a saint, by the way! 😉
 
At the moment I’m reading Saint Catherine of Sienna by Sigrid Undset and the story of her life is seriously inspiring me… several times a day I’ve found myself thinking “if she could deal with ______ suffering, I can handle this…”
 
The Science Before Science: A Guide to Thinking in the 21st Century by Anthony Rizzi. It was recommended to me by one of the people at my local Catholic bookstore.

It’s probably the best intro to Aristotelian/Thomistic philosophy that I’ve come across. By no means is it an easy read, though – there’s just too much there to read it quickly.
 
Read the lives of the saints, especially the Doctors of the Church.
