Out of curiosity, I’m just wondering which denominations tend to be the most hostile toward Catholicism.

I mostly am just wondering this because when I meet people of other denominations, I wonder what they think when they find out I’m Catholic. Of course, I know it depends on the person, but I guess I am just wanting to know what the stereotypical view of Catholicism is for different denominations (e.g. which really think the pope is the anti-christ).

I would have to agree with your sentiment that it depends on the individual. If I had to pick one group that is often hostile to the Church, it’s ex-Catholics who wanted a divorce, or didn’t like Church teaching on sexuality, or confession, or whatever.

Perhaps you have already done so, but I would commit to being charitable to all and a beacon of Christ’s light to the world. :o

Recognizing that there are MANY exceptions at the “individual level” my personal experience has been that generally SDA churches or more openly anti-Catholicism than most other denominations. OF COURSE, I am NOT including all SDA members; I am simply saying that my experience has led me to conclude that generally, I will find a higher percentage of SDA members who are anti-Catholic.

I grew up in Chicago which was, and possibly still, is a city with a very large Catholic population. Until I moved to the south, 27 years ago, I had no idea there was any hostility towards the Church at all.

I am not knocking the south. I love living here but, there are many, many small, independant Bible churches throughout the area that seem to have a genuine hatred for the Catholic Church.

By the way, what does SDA stand for?

i think the southern baptists by far the most hostile. the various evangelical fundamentalists next followed by the cult types (JW, SDA, LDS)

the “protestants” (anglicans, lutherans, etc.) seemed to have mellowed out over the years.

SDA are the Seventh Day Adventists. It is part of their doctrine that the Catholic Church IS the Whore of Babylon AND that at some point she will try to kill anyone not worshipping on Saturday.

As a rule, the less a denomination understands and has sacraments, the more likely they are to be anti-Catholic.

Here in Alabama, the small, evangelical Churches are bad. Anything that is Church of God, Church of Christ, etc. The Baptist Church tend to have an anti-Catholic mentality in some members, but it is not commonly seen in the pastors of the larger, more urban churches. A local preacher from a rural baptist church got on the sports show and called Catholics non-Christians and not a part of the Body of Christ at all. The rest of the show was people calling in and calling him an idiot, most of them non-Catholic.

Five in particular come to mind:

  • Calvinist Churches - because they are very like the CC in many ways, & could almost be described as Catholics who have the Bible where we have the Pope. They have a well-defined theology, a strong theological tradition, great missionary zeal, & know what they believe. They are opposed to Catholicism on principle, not out of personal animosity, but because they see the CC as being no more Christian than (say) Mormonism. Rejection of the false Church of Rome is AFAICS as much a matter of doctrine for them as is faith in Christ.
  • Churches which are Premillennial Dispensationalist.
  • “Messianic Jewish” believers
  • Oneness Pentecostals seem not to like anyone very much, the CC among others. As to why - 🤷
  • A group that is very puzzling (to me anyway) is that of those who find traces of “The Great Whore” in absolutely everything. What I can’t work out is whether they have a common doctrinal outlook. These are the people who see occult significance in the calendar, the number of sides of the late Pope’s coffin, the shape of a birthday-cake presented to the present Pope. Some of them are Seventh-Day Adventist - but whether they all are, is not clear. Perhaps some of the former SDAs could help us out 🙂 ?
    Also:
  • Are all “non-denominational” groups Premillennial Dispensationalists ?
If there is any misrepresentation of anyone’s belief in this, my apologies.

The Reformed tradition (Calvinists) started out strongly anti-Catholic. Since then there has been considerable moderation among the mainline Reformed churches. There are exceptions, of course and I would think more so with independent churches which lean to Calvinism.

For example, most have disclaimed the view that the Pope is the anti-Christ. I have attended Presbyterian Churches all my life and have never heard anything said against the Catholic Church from the pulpit.

When I was a Christian, my baptist church never said anything against the Catholic Church. Actually, to be honest, all the time I have went their, I have never heard the term Catholic.

Of course, I personally like to judge people by who they are, not their religion affiliation.

Fundamentalists… Is that a denomination? :hmmm:

God bless
You may have meant “fundamental evangelicals” - not a denomination. I would think a specific denomination may be too broad as some have already spoken to. I’m not Catholic, obviously, but I do not hate anyone, nor do I think I’m better than anyone else because I’m not…some of you will contest to that I’m sure…LOL:thumbsup:

When you were a Christian?

I was gone for like a week over Christmas, what happened?

God bless
lost faith, and realized I was hypocrite. Decided best to not call myself something I might not be and make god angry, and I might become a Christian someday when I am less violent and less angry.

I think you mean kill anyone who IS worshipping on a Saturday - they hold to a Saturday sabbath.

Considering that there are a heck of a lot of Catholics in good standing who worship regularly on Saturdays (hello vigil Mass!) and that more and more non-Catholic churches, in my experience, are following suit and holding Saturday evening services, that’s the most laughable thing I’ve heard in ages.

Hmm well pax tecum on your journey friend.

God bless

The apologists on “To every man an answer” on the Calvary Chapel radio station don’t have much respect for Catholocism

If you look at any of the new “Emergent Churches” they are very Catholic friendly as they seek to have a form of the ancient faith as they call it, but aren’t willing to make the jump across the Tiber.

Evident in their publications, I would have to say the Jehovah’s Witnesses are certainly the most hostile toward Catholics. They don’t much care for Anglicans either.

Fundamentalist(if that is a true religion), Southern Baptists, Pentecostals(including Assembly of God)
