Here is the issue I have.
Before Pius Xll greatly reduced Octaves in 1955, they used to have to group them into a classification based on orders. Easter and Pentecost were considered Privaleged Octaves of the First Order.
Pius Xll reduced it to just Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost, and then Paul Vl cut Pentecost out as well.
The issue I have is I think a lot of people don’t see the importance of Pentecost as they once did. Through most of Chrstian history it was right up there with Easter and Christmas celebration wise. The stories of cathedrals letting doves out with little red bows tied to them to symbolize the Spirit descending on the Church is so amazing.
I have made my opinion on this before, but I believe Pentecost is the second most important Solemnity in the Liturgical year, after Easter. It’s importance is so much to the birth of the Church and really the outpouring of the Spirit on the Apostles.
I agree that Octaves can be repetitive in the Hours. But I really think Pentecost was one Octave they shouldn’t have removed. I feel like a lot of people now just view Pentecost as the end of Eastertide now. Plus the Octave of Pentecost had the ember days in it. Another tradition I wish was never done away with. Just my opinion.
This is Wikipedia article but it gives a good history of octaves. It’s crazy how many they used to have before 1955!
