Which genre of film is your favorite?

I am starting to buy DVDs. I didn’t before because I figured you would only watch them once. But in fact you do watch them again. I haven’t bought movies yet; I am doing TV series, Avengers, Poirot, Maigret. Just got Fawlty Towers.

Some of Hitchcock is a little too creepy for me - The Birds, Psycho. I don’t like those ones so much. I like the ones from the 50s. Notorious, Suspicion, Marnie, Vertigo. They are ok. And North by Northwest for me is right up there with Rear Window.

I like Notorius and Suspicion too. If you haven’t seen Rope, I recommend it. I think you would like it.

Will do. I do love Jimmy Stewart. He is one of my favorites. Destry Rides Again, Philadelphia Story.

Yes. He is still one of my favorite actors - How the West Was Won and Shenedoah (something like that).

He was in another Hitchcock favorite with Doris Day - The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Do you know another one I love? Pillow Talk. Doris Day. Am actually kind of embarrassed by how much I love that movie. A little goes a long way. Also Some Like It Hot. Seven Year Itch is good too. Bus Stop. Butterfield 8 - Liz Taylor. (this could go on forever…:D)

I love Pillow Talk! I still laugh at that movie. Have you seen Man’s Favorite Sport with Rock Hudson and Paula Prentiss? That is another good one. Doris Day and Rock Hudson were great working together.
I just watched Seven Year Itch and Bus Stop not too long ago.
Have you seen River of No Return and Niagara with Marilyn Monroe?
They are very good.

Yes, I have seen River of No Return and Niagara. They are both good. Marilyn Monroe may have had a lot of problems in life - no argument there - but she was a great actress. You have to give her that. Very underrated. People obsess on her issues. Have you seen the Misfits?

How about this one - Red Dust. Jean Harlow and Clark Gable. From the 30s. I watched it years ago and just loved it. I recently tried to find it to re-watch it but couldn’t. I want to see if I like it as much as I did the first time. Another good actress is Claudette Colbert - also underrated. And, of course, the Thin Man with Dick Powell and Myrna Loy. Can’t imagine life without those. Jimmy Stewart is the criminal in one of them. I have seen them so many times I am kind of numb to them - need a 5 year break…And of course Fred and Ginger…👍

Harlow and Gable had a lot of chemistry. I think they did one that was called China Sea or South China Sea that was good. I haven’t seen Red Dust in awhile. Misfits was another good one although a bit depressing. Another good cast. I wonder if Thelma Ritter ever wrote a book on Hollywood. The Thin Man series was great. William Powell and Myrna Loy had great chemistry on screen to as did Fred and Ginger.

I am very, very picky when it comes to movies.

I do not like chick flicks, romance, drama or slasher films.

I like supernatural horror films and some science fiction films. I like some fantasy films.

I agree that Misfits is depressing; I don’t know if I would watch it again or not. But I remember being impressed by it.

I would never forgive myself if I didn’t put in a good word for Bogart/Bacall. The Big Sleep is in my top five of all time. Also To Have or Have Not is great too. And I have great fun with film noir mysteries. Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, that sort of thing. Philip Marlowe. Lucille Ball played a dramatic lead in one called A Dark Corner. Just nailed it. Who would believe it.

And I agree with the comment about being picky about movies. I either want to see a movie or I DON’T want to see a movie. I watched Shakespeare in Love (had to go; no way out). I suffered through it - it was so sentimental and pointless - and it won an Oscar. Sad what movies are today. I think I spoiled myself by watching so much older stuff. Movies used to be an art. I am very glad we still have them around.

Talk about acting teams that have chemistry, what about Tracy and Hepburn? I believe Adam’s Rib is one of their best collaborations.

Key Largo is another of my favorite Bogart/Bacall movies.

I think Marilyn Monroe was first coming into her own, insofar as acting is concerned, shortly before her death.

I think I like action/mystery films the best.

Of course the best films have a bit of romance, comedy, and possibly science fiction thrown in. And there is such a things as TOO MUCH action. Some of the newer action films have so much action that they seem more like video games than they do movies.

The story has to be a good enough that you would read it in book form.
 
I honestly don’t have one. I mean, the newest Judd Apatow movie caught my eye after I was adding Russian films on my summer “to watch” list.

I do too. I think she was “used” by many inside the movie industry and outside the industry. She had a tragic life and it is sad she never found anyone who genuinely cared about her and was willing to stand by her.
