Which genre of film is your favorite?

I like Hays Code era movies the best. There is really not any type of movie I don’t like, as long as it is old. I personally don’t find any new movies good. The latest movies I enjoy are from the last millennium. I do, however, enjoy new TV movies, such as Poirot, and Father Brown. To be honest, I think new TV movies are much better than new movie movies.

Genre wise (which is the whole point of this thread) is more difficult. I like comedy, musicals (only old musicals. I cannot stand popular “music”), westerns, detective/gangster films, comedy-drama, and movies without a genre.

If I had to pick one genre, I would say comedy, but specifically, slapstick. I love the Three Stooges! 😃

The Apartment, under Billy Wilder’s skillful direction, is such a wonderful film, with Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, and Fred MacMurray at their best.

Not sure I can narrow my favorites to 5.
  1. The Searchers
  2. Rear Window
  3. Double Indemnity
  4. Suspicion
  5. Now Voyager
Jane Eyre, Rebecca, Gone With the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, How the West Was Won are some other favorites.

Supernatural horror movies are my favorite. I do like slasher films, although I admit they are usually pretty stupid. I still like them anyways.

I first saw the Apartment when I was maybe 14, 15. I am bred, born, raised on the West Coast. It really symbolized New York City to me, for years. Brought it alive. Something about that film is just magical - great performances from Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine and Fred MacMurray as you note. It captures an era of American life so perfectly, with such a good story. Happy ending. I just cry and cry when Shirley Maclaine runs from MacMurray back to Lemmon. A truly great, great film, often overlooked. I appreciate it more with time. Watch it around Christmas.

Double Indemnity is fantastic. But a bit dark. I went through a Barbara Stanwyck phase - she is equally good at comedy and drama, great actress. Christmas in Connecticut, that sort of thing. So glad we agree on Rear Window! The Searchers is fantastic too, agree on that one.

I remember one called Lilith with Warren Beatty that I loved. Can’t find it. Late 50s early 60s I think. Also A Public Eye with Mia Farrow, around 1970. Can’t find it either. Cute little movie about wandering around London. Haven’t seen it since I was maybe 17. Not classics mind you, but interesting films. Out of Towners, Jack Lemmon, Sandy Dennis.

I just rented Double Indemnity from the library and watched it again. Supposedly the 2 main characters were so unsavory they had a difficult time trying to find actors willing to play them. Finally, Fred and Barbara signed up. Growing up I only saw MacMurray in comedies - my three sons and the Disney Flubber movies. This movie really showed he was a good dramatic actor.
Have you ever seen The Two Mrs. Carrolls with Stanwyck and Bogart? Excellent!! There was a movie where Stanwyck plays the wife of a detective. She gives up her career to marry him. She soon tires of being the good little housewife and pushes for her husband to move up in his career. Also, Sorry Wrong Number where she is an invalid and overhears a plot on the telephone for murder!

No I haven’t seen The Two Mrs. Carrolls - I will definitely check it out. Bogart and Stanwyck sound great. Thanks. I can rent DVDs from a library near by; they are good on classics. I think I’ve seen Sorry, Wrong Number. Rings a bell.
 
Some people mentioned that they liked Rear Window. I didn’t like Rear Window. I don’t think it is right to be a peeping tom. If you have a concern, imho, the morally correct thing to do is to contact the proper authorities and let them know.
 
I like action, adventure, spy, and dystopian. That’s a few but there is a lot of cross-over among them. I’ll watch a rom-com but it just isn’t a favorite.

He did try to tell his best friend who was a detective. His friend didn’t believe him and did a little checking and tried to convine Jimmy he was imaging things. Because of jimmy’s perserverence the murderer was caught.

So are you saying that it is not a sin to spend your time being a peeping tom and to use high powered binoculars to look into other people’s private bedrooms to see if you can find any criminal activity to use against them?

It’s a movie! How many peeping toms (voyeurs) actually do their peeping for this purpose? Virtually none.

Loved The Out-of-Towners! Great comedy set in New York City at its worst. I once saw Jack Lemmon on the stage: excellent actor.

Did you ever see Jack Lemmon in The Gazebo or Under the Yum Yum Tree? He was one of my favorite actors from the 50’s and 60’s. Wasn’t he in the Days of Wine and Roses with Lee Remick?

Yes! Days of Wine and Roses is a fantastic movie. Jack Lemmon is one of my favorites.

Glad you like the Out of Towners too, meltzerboy. I think it was kind of panned by the critics there for a while (uh, years that would be), but I think now it fares a little better, 3-1/2 stars, something like that. It completely cracks me up all the way through. Holding up well too. Neil Simon.

I liked the original out of towners. Not the remake.

I don’t like a movie that glorifies peeping tom-ism. I found it to be a terrible movie. A complete waste of time. I certainly would not recommend it.
