Which genre of film is your favorite?

Please do try and get hold of them. I’m sure you’ll enjoy both of them. All three, by the way, have an added bonus in the form of music. You’ll remember the incomparable Marilyn Monroe singing Runnin’ Wild and a couple of other numbers in Some Like It Hot. The Italian Job has an outstanding soundtrack scored by Quincy Jones, even though it’s a British production, and The Sting features those famous Scott Joplin piano rags.

Thanks B! I am on it - will do. I actually don’t like Marilyn Monroe’s singing but I LOVE Scott Joplin! 👍
 
I mentioned The Gazebo a few posts back. I think Glenn Ford is the main actor- not Jack Lemmon. I will double check on IMDB unless someone else knows.

It appears to have been Glenn Ford. But Days of Wine and Roses, yes, that was Jack Lemmon in a great performance.

I must look it out, I can’t say I remember it offhand. I certainly like both Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase, though both of them have been guilty of some pretty shoddy potboilers. Not long ago I saw Private Benjamin for the first time. It’s just an extended TV commercial with a “Join the Army” message, like an even worse movie of the same kind starring Bill Murray. Foul Play has Chase and Hawn trying to thwart an assassination attempt on the Pope.
 
I am steering into TV here, a digression, sorry. I just watched a BBC series, 1971, Elizabeth R, Glenda Jackson (9 hours; the life of Queen Elizabeth - youth to death). It may as well be a film. It is of that quality. I highly recommend it. Well acted, great costumes, historically accurate. Really a joy. The DVD is a good investment; you would watch this every year or so (if you are interested in history), no question. It’s driving back me to my history reading of the period - really makes it come alive.

For comparison I am also watching the Anne Marie Duff version from I think about 8 years ago, “The Virgin Queen”. It is gripping, but a little cheesy, sexed up and loose with the historical facts. The acting (and music) are great though - I recommend it, as long as you watch the Elizabeth R one too, for balance and good info.

I haven’t seen the Glenda Jackson portrayal of Elizabeth 1. Bette Davis played Elizabeth 1 also I think. I have not seen that one either.

If you can find it in a library, you might check it out. It is long, 9 hours, but of course you can just switch it off and on as you wish - take as long as you want. Some episodes are better than others. The Armada episode put me to sleep twice 🙂 - got through it the third try. It is good but you have to concentrate - how often do you have to do that these days, right? 😉 Also Robert Dudley is a LOT cuter in the Anne Marie Duff version.

The funniest thing is this - I am doing family research. I have now confirmed that I am a descendant of the royal Stewarts. (Not too rare, 10,000 people or more can claim this as it turns out.) From my male Stewart relative: “There are two distinct lines 781+ and 781-. Both are Royal lines, but they split at James the Fifth High Steward, whose son Walter, married King Robert the Bruce’s sister Marjory and whose son was the first Stewart King. It is believed that we descend from the second son Andrew, hence the bloodline.” (I am so excited, just confirmed last night.)

Mary Queen of Scots is my (quite distant) ancestor! And all this time I’ve gone for Elizabeth! 😃 Crazy. (my question is why aren’t I related to her too - they were cousins. Am going to check this out further.)

Documentaries are my favorite for quite some time now. Makes you see and (sort of) experience the world without leaving the couch. Not sure if that sounds like an attractive proposition for outdoorsy people but it does for me.

On a lighter note, I used to have an inordinate liking to romantic comedies in my early 20s. 😛
