Correct me if I’m wrong, but in the EF calender there is a commemoration of Jewish saints: August 1, “Commemoration of the Holy Machabees”. The text from the Angelus Press 1962 Missal says: “These seven holy brothers suffered martyrdom under Antiochus in the second century before Christ”.

Don’t know whether that counts as they died BC. Also, in a similar vein, what is the status in the Catholic church of e.g. Moses, Abraham, the prophets, all living before Christ but could be considered saints.

Some names that come to mind:

All of the Old Testament prophets of course.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Mahatma Gandhi
Harriet Tubman
The 14th Dalai Lama (I know he’s still alive, but I just had to include him on this list.)
Martin Luther King Jr.
Perhaps C.S. Lewis, though I know him mainly through his various writings and only have a limited knowledge of his life (though I am amending that currently as I read Surprised by Joy).

Many Jewish people pray to Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson for his intercession. Many claim his intercession has helped them. It sure seems like he is a saint.

The Wesleys and their wives (Methodism)

General and Mrs. Booth (Salvos)

Dietrich Bonhoeffer (German martyr)

David Livingstone (missionary to Africa)

Eric Liddell (Hero of “Chariots of Fire”)

William Wilberforce (Abolitionist)

Dwight L Moody (American Evangelist)

Abraham Lincoln.

Sundar Singh (Indian evangelist)

William Carey (Father of modern missions / India)

Hudson Taylor (Missionary to China)

Gladys Aylward (Missionary to China)

Corrie Ten Boom (Writer and survivor of Auschwitz)

Watchman Nee (Chinese Christian).

Alexander Solzenitsyn. (Soviet Writer)

Toyohiko Kagawa (Japanese Christian)

Rev. Robert Missenden (personal contact).

Billy Graham.

Dalai Lama (the current one).

Raoul Wallenberg (Rescuer of Jews)

Count Folke Bernadotte (POWactivist)

Brother Andrew (Dutch evangelist and Bible smuggler)

George Muller (Orphanages)

Frere Roger (Taize)

Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy (“Woodbine Willie”).

I suppose I could think of a few more over time.

Just in keeping with the game, I’d say D. James Kennedy, PhD, (d. 2007) of Coral Ridge Ministries in Florida. He really could preach.

Menachem Begin, Jew and Anwar Sadat, Muslim: peacemakers.
I wonder if the Church could declare ‘Peacemakers’ from everyone including other religion. This could be useful in clarifying what attitude Catholic should have toward those individuals. However, I just remembered that the ‘peacemakers’ will be called childreen of God. Muslims don’t like to be called childreen of God but rather slaves of God!

I live about 45 minutes from that ministry. I once heard one of his sermons about Jesus’ parable about separating the sheep from the goats that sounded very Catholic. I am paraphrasing but I remember him saying something like “I am not saying we earn our salvation but this parable clearing indicates that we with to run the race together with God.”

Peter denied knowing Jesus three times. He is a Saint. We were not privy to MLK private confessions. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Maybe I shouldn’t have condemned him, but it’s worth noting. Sainthood is not a popularity contest.

You went to his church? Cool:). I knew him only by radio and TV.

Although I know nothing of his faith life, I’d imagine that one could not preach as he did without “walking the walk”.

Correct. While this is all just for fun, we should recall that to nominate someone to be a saint, it is not enough to have been well known, or to have been a religious leader; they must have lived and died in a holy way.

Protestant suggestions include: Bonhoeffer, Kagawa (of Japan), Schweitzer, Tyndale, Hus, Waldo, perhaps M L King, possibly Abe Lincoln, definitely Mandela (Methodist), Wesley brothers, A. J. Muste, women like Harriet Beecher Stowe and Jane Adams, such Quakers as George Fox and Rufus Jones, pioneers in the YMCA and YWCA, and a variety of others who focused on peace, racial equality and medical missions.
Code:
There would be a number of Jews, but certainly not Begin, who was a cruel terrorism prior to 1948.

Somone suggested that the Baptists are not Protestants. Actually, they are the largest Protestant group in the USA. The next largest: Methodists, Lutherans. Perhaps Pentecostalists come next, though they're hard to define and number. Then you have the Presbyterians, the UCC, the Disciples of Christ, etc. - then literally thousands of independent congregations, some of them mega. It had become fashionable for these churches to refer to themselves as non-denominational, one way of attracting some people.

Now, the Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses are definitely not Protestants. As for the Anglicans (Episcopalians), a toss-up. The 39 articles certainly have a strong Protestant ring to them, but the ritual is closest to Catholicism among non-Catholics. In some ways - for example, electing gay bishops - Episcopalians are 'left' of nearly everyone else, except the Unitarians. Some Unitarians - ironically - number themselves with Protestants but are more reluctant to list themselves as Christians!

God doesn't care which religious tribe we belong to. God looks at our hearts and not at our labels, doctrines, or rituals.

Hello everyone,

This is just a fun thread. Which Jewish or Christian person from another denomination (non-Catholic) do you think would have made Blessed or Sainthood and why?

I think Martin Luthur King may have been a candidate. He was faithful, selfless and gave his life for a just cause.

Surely, the purpose of possessing an open mind is to shut it on something solid - GK Chesterton
Latimer, Ridley, Tyndale, John Wesley, Bunyan.

Charles King and Martyr is the equivalent to an Anglican saint, but would not be my choice for one.

I think Chiune Sugihara would qualify, although he was probably a Buddhist or Shintoist.

Edit: Actually, he converted to Orthodox Christianity! So 🙂

Is it wrong I ask C.S. Lewis to intercede for me?

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Tony

Dorothy L Sayers is interesting. I’d thought of her simply as a detective novel writer, but having looked her up, yes, she was a devout Christian (Anglican) too.

TS Elot was a very spiritual man, and I’ve met various RCs who are as impressed with him as I am.

About two years ago there was a programme about him on the BBC and he was referred to as “catholic” throughout (which arguably he was). When I said that it might have been a good idea to mention that he was CofE, I was fobbed off with a specious reply.
