Which of Seven Deadly Sins is most often your downfall?

I’m lazy and I like to eat. Why I don’t weigh 300 lbs. is truly a miracle of God.

Bad me!

I believe that Pride is the most frequently committed sin and I rated it the worst. It was Lucifer’s sin and the sin of our first parents

I’m an old woman. Lust was never much of a problem, even in youth. Now pride is a biggie though. I can not abide a fool which leads to anger. I empathize with Lisa N. Even though I KNOW my limited patience leads to annoyance and on to anger, I still feel the red rising and have to talk myself down.

DEFINITELY envy.

I envy stay-at-home mamas.

I envy those intelligent enough to marry someone of their faith (I wasn’t).

I envy those better off financially than me.

I envy folks who don’t have disabled spouses.

And I shove down my envy and resultant anger with gluttony.

I wonder if Oregon’s “death with dignity” law would accept me?

Pride. It has to be pride. If there is one thing that will probably be the cause of my downfall, it will be pride.

Hi vatoco6 ,
It sounds like you are overwhelmed and stressed. I’m sorry you are suffering. 😦 It also sounds like you are depressed.

I don’t blame you for feeling shortchanged. Maybe some of your feelings are valid, eh? That must be very frustrating.

Gluttony is my biggest…I eat more than I need too!!..Lust is a close second, then envy, but not so much.

Are the 7 deadly sins ALWAYS mortal? Because myself and everyone I know do them on an everyday basis. If they are I can safely say everyone I know, including myself, is going to hell. http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif
No, they are not always mortal. All of us have vices which fall under one or more of the 7 Deadly (or, more correctly, Capital) Sins. They are called the Deadly or Captial sins because they directly oppose the Cardinal virtues. They are not mortal unless they are also grave matter and done with full knowledge and consent.

Lust.

I have such problems with this sin that I’ve put myself on a strict regimen of abstinence of the eyes. I’m on a permanent TV diet. I READ the summary and ratings of everything before I watch, excepting thenews.

Same goes for movies. I try to only watch films that have PG-13 rating or lower. If there is an R-rating, I read why. Usually sexual content is listed (though there are instances where I’ve been surprised!)

Not viewing things promoting lust has helped me immensely!

If you have problems with lust, turn off the TV, activate the content filter on your Internet Explorer (prevents your computer from accessing certain sites, and you have to enter a password to overrride it. If you want to avoid temptation, have someone trustworthy in charge of the password), only watch movies with lower than PG-13 rating, and pull out a good religious book to read, like, “The Story of a Soul: the Autobiography of St. Therese Lisieux.”

Thanks, that helps.

Fr. Richard Rohr points out that there are two more to add to the list: Deceit and Fear.

Deceit
leads to the whole American ideal of “white lies” and “marketing” to keep from letting on that you aren’t what you want people to think you are. He differentiates it from the sort of pride in which you want to give help to others but won’t accept help for yourself. (Yes, you selfless ones out there who knock yourselves out for everyone else but won’t let anyone else have the pleasure of helping you, you are guilty of pride.)

Fear in the sense he means it can lead to a life in which you can’t give up control or the illusion of having control. For instance, you might be interested in knowing and following all the rules of the Church not because you want to be close to God, but because you want to know you’re right and can’t be accused of anything. (This is, of course, nonsense, since the closer you get to God the more aware you become of how liable to accusation you are!) If you have a deep faith in a set of rules or explanations being right, but can’t imagine yourself having faith in the sense that Abraham had it, where he was willing to leave his relatives behind or slay his own son in order to follow God, then you may well be susceptible to this habit of sin. Faith, after all, is first and foremost a trust in God, not a trust in having a set of rules within your own correct grasp.

Thomas Merton reduced all sin to one thing: ingratitude.
"All sin is a punishment for the primal sin of not knowing God. That is to say all sin is a punishment for ingratitude. For as St. Paul says (Romans 1:21) the Gentiles, who “knew” God did not know Him because they were not grateful for the knowledge of Him. They did not know Him because their knowledge did not gladden them with His love. For if we do not love Him we show that we do not know Him. He is love. Deus caritas est…
“There is no neutrality between gratitude and ingratitude. Those who are not grateful soon begin to complain of everything. Those who do not love, hate. In the spiritual life, there is no such thing as indifference to love or hate. That is why tepidity (which seems to be indifferent) is so detestable. It is hate disguised as love.”
[Ouch. He goes on…]
“To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything He has given us–and He has given us everything. Every breath we draw is a gift of His love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings immense graces from Him. Gratitude therefore takes nothing for granted, is never unresponsive, is constantly awaking to new wonder and to praise of the goodness of God. For the grateful man knows that God is good, not from hearsay, but by experience. And that is what makes all the difference.”
Thomas Merton*, Thoughts in Solitude*

Pride…but, I mean, that leads to all the others, right? “Vanity, definitely my favourite sin.” – Al Pacino as The Devil in “Devil’s Advocate”.

The one I’m most aware of is sloth. I spend wayyy too much time not doing what I should - studying, doing homework, etc (the Internet plays a large part in this).

I don’t even want to mention about my procrastination “skills”. Sometimes I swear I’m majoring in Procrastination, with a minor in Doing Nothing.

😦

My deadly sin is definately sloth. All you have to do is look at my house to know that. It’s not that I don’t do anything at all, it’s just that there are so many other things to do that are so much more interesting than cleaning house. I also take it to the spiritual level. I tend to get very spiritually lazy. Often the only time I sit down and pray during the day is when we say bedtime prayers at night.

Pride is probably my biggest problem because it leads to anger. I usually get angry (at my kids) because I’m afraid that someone’s going to think I did a bad job with them when they do things wrong. Goofy, I know. I’ve made a lot of progress there with frequent confession and thinking about why I’m getting angry. But it still happens!

I also struggle with sloth. That’s why I’m sitting here typing this instead of doing some work I should be doing.😃

That’s really a tough call…I’ll have to think about it, and even then I’m not sure if I’ll know the answer.

Anger is the absolute worst for me!! Absolutely! You can tempt me all you want with dirty stuff and tasty foods and I can hold strong but do something to upset me and I will get angry in a split second! 😦
