Well said Bishop Blaire! “I hope those who made or repeated this false statement will correct the record and report the bishops’ long and consistent record of support for health care which protects the life, dignity and consciences of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.”

Just more posturing by the Administration…

The administration is trying to separate Catholics from their bishops. This administration would probably love to see a schism in the Church.

They have been showcasing Sr. Keehan with CHA for a few years now as their propagandist.

Can you say “tone deaf”?

NYT: Emperors new clothes look GREAT!

The administration is quite cynically trying to exploit dissidents in its attack on the Catholic Church.

Exactly…And with Selebius giving the Administration advice, is it any wonder that this president has no clue about Church teaching and how fundamental these things are??

Fortunately - I don’t see the Bishops and others who agree with us backing down on this. The administration is going to discover that it this won’t just go away no matter how many dissident Catholics they try to quote in the media.

The president is going to either have to drop this requirement of face a court battle which, if it goes the way of other church/state cases, he will lose.

I wonder about that - I suspect Obama may know perfectly well that faithful Catholics and the bishops will not approve and this is the best way to go about destroying all things Church.

From Carney: *the issue here is giving employers the right to deny women – to deny women – access to preventive services, including contraception free of charge.*It’s hard to pack that many lies into one sentence.

Indeed, so who (of stature) will call them out on these lies?

Perhaps. I prefer to give him - in Christian Charity - some benefit of the doubt.

If you are right and this is intended to be an attack on the Church, then I still hold to the idea that it will wind up in court and that he will lose.
The matter really does boil down to a constitutional issue and given the fact that the courts have consistently decided in favor of a strict separation of Church and state, I don’t see how they could rule that the government has the right to enforce this rule.

Look at it this way…IF, because the Supreme court says so…
we can’t have the 10 commandments posted in a courthouse…
we can’t put a nativity scene on the courthouse lawn…
we can’t have prayer in schools…
etc.
etc.

by what possible logic could the Supreme court force Religious institutions to post contraceptive information (no matter how they package it) on their grounds or to speak to people about it or to pay for it as part of an insurance policy etc…

Personally I just don’t see it happening - especially for something that is elective drugs and procedures!!

Hopefully the Court will have the same mentality as they had in early January when they shot down, by a 9-0 vote, the Administration’s attempt to tell religious groups who they had to hire as ministers.

The bishops and a lot of Church and other religious leaders are doing much more than I would have guessed - and that is a good thing.
Yes, you are right.

What we need are some bishops who will play their role like Jim Caviezel played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ: firm and resolved, not afraid to speak “truth to power”.

I think they are digging deep within themselves now.

I’m not too concerned about the Bishops playing their role. So far they have done remarkably well and I think they will continue to engage the Administration on this issue. My concern is with the average American lay Catholic. I’m concerned that they will get tired of the issue and stop petitioning their Senators and Congressmen. The Bishops will not pursuade the Administration to change its stance on the issue. Only consistent and sustained political pressure, primarily brought to bear by the voters, will catch the attention of the politicians in Washington. I think we need to redouble our efforts to catch the attention of the President and his Administration.

This is, I think, the way it ought to be.

The bishops lead Catholics and Catholics affect political policy.

I frankly do not expect the administration to change it’s stance, it has made its priorities quite clear and placed it’s political bets accordingly. And this is really much bigger than this administration, anyway.

The policy must be changed. How to accomplish that remains a subject for debate.

This is true and necessary. We need to keep up the pressure.
however we need to also remember that legislative solutions can also be transitory.
Now a court decision that is another matter.
There are at least three suits already filed in three different federal courts. NC, CO an AL…I expect at least one will issue an injunction against the implementation of the mandate before it goes into effect.
