White House Discussing Phasing Out Coronavirus Task Force, Pence Says
Vice president says Trump administration is considering shifting pandemic response to agencies around early June
WASHINGTON—Vice President Mike Pence said the Trump administration is having internal conversations about phasing out the White House’s coronavirus task force.Mr. Pence, speaking to reporters in his office Tuesday, said senior aides are discussing shifting the task force’s response efforts to individual departments and agencies. He added that he has begun talking with the Federal Emergency Management Agency about a transition plan.
The vice president said the timing of a phaseout is still being completed, but the administration is eyeing early June.
Mr. Pence said the discussions were still preliminary, and Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House’s coronavirus response coordinator, said the administration would continue to keep “a close eye on the data.”
The task force’s doctors will continue to advise President Trump on his handling of the pandemic, administration officials said. The task force had already begun meeting less often and in smaller groups in recent weeks, the officials said.
