Washington (CNN)In the wake of Friday’s landmark Supreme Court ruling that allows same-sex couples nationwide to marry, the White House was illuminated in rainbow colors for the evening, a nod to the achievement of the gay rights movement.
On Twitter, the official White House account displayed a rainbow-colored avatar of the presidential mansion.

 Okay, I know that in light of the SCOTUS ruling itself, this is small potatoes, but it still makes me angry that taxpayer money and administrative time was spent on this display of lording it over the American people - imagine if, after Roe V. Wade, the president had made a big graphic display celebrating “abortion rights.” :banghead:

I’m not bothered about the ruling. However I’m a bit uncomfortable about the rainbow color display on the White House itself. It is the President’s house, but it is also a national monument and I’m not a huge fan of public monuments being used for statements on divisive issues. I have a similar feeling about the confederate flag being on public monuments and buildings.

Disneys magic kingdom was lit up as well which is even worse since they cater to little kids.

I was hoping a thread would pop up on this. I found this very inappropriate for the White House to do this. Especially since during Obama’s first term in office who believed marriage was between a man and a woman. To me it was another way of Obama thumbing his nose at all the Americans who are against same sex marriage. Doesn’t the White House belong to all Americans? To me this ruling was purely political like everything else that has happened under Obama. I am thinking this had to have been planned ahead of time to be able to get all the lighting in place by evening. I wondered the same thing on Roe v. Wade. Would THIS White House had celebrated that.

In light of the controversy surrounding display of other offensive symbols in the south on government buildings, I find this rather hypocritical.

I don’t imagine it took much time and money to throw on a few colored gels over the lawn lights.
I don’t think they did it to “lord over” people. In fact, the White House statement says it was in celebration:

*“Tonight, the White House was lit to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to progress and equality, here in America and around the world,” a White House official said. “The pride colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and tonight, these colors celebrate a new chapter in the history of American civil rights.” *

The motive here was quite opposite what you are feeling.

.
Yeah, sure. :dts:

I really didn’t mind. Taxpayers dollars certainly are spent on far worse. I think of all the far more dollars spent on war for example. In comparison the bill to light the WH in color was nothing. I watched Meghan Kelly interview Tony Perkins on FOX with the backdrop of the WH and actually thought it was colorful. I simply reminded myself that the occupant was not only elected but reelected POTUS and that in America, his belief is that gay couples deserve the same justice and liberty in one nation under God as straight ones.

Obama is not unique in changing his view. Much of America has evolved on the SSM issue in just a few short yrs.

I pay my taxes too, and I thought it was a beautiful way to celebrate the ruling and what it represents. Our country is INCLUSIVE!!! That’s a good thing!!!

If the country is so inclusive, why can’t it include a state like Texas that doesn’t want this new thing shoved down out throats?

I, too, found this a VERY poor idea on the part of The White House. This display is “spiking the football” right into the face of Christians who hold valid and deeply held and committed to beliefs regarding this issue. It is poking a finger into the eye of Americans who disagree with the SCOTUS decision and is akin to taunting. There is no attempt to unify a country. Quite the opposite. This added bit of “celebrating” was not needed–there were MANY other avenues for that.

In some ways it is very appropriate though. I mean this “inclusion” is brought to us by those in power; they will enforce it too. In bad taste, adolescent, sure, but honest. The Obama White House has not been about tolerating different viewpoints for a while now, right.

Exactly. And I would find any kind of similar display distasteful regardless of the administration or the political party in power.

Yes, this would be like a Republican winning the election and putting up a Confederate flag. Would send me through the ceiling, even if I had voted for him.

Wow, who knew the truth of morality could change like that? Or maybe we all just had it wrong all these millennia and finally figured it out.

Maybe the times have changed or maybe it was just my younger naivety, but I thought adults were supposed to be the reasonable, wise, respectable people. Now it seems they’re all ruled by their passions, popularity, and act like children throwing rainbows and glitter around. I guess we’re taking a step closer to being like the Capitol in The Hunger Games, where everyone is dressed like clowns and they have no qualms killing children for the sake of their pleasure and entertainment.

(before anyone says homosexuals don’t need abortion, I’m talking about the libertine sexual ethics that permit, demand both)

I really don’t care about the money spent, it’s the fact that this administration is wasting time catering to PC ideals in order to get votes instead of concentrating on important issues like (as you might agree) getting out of the current mess in the Middle East.
