I’m curious to hear some thoughts about faith. Mine seems to be mostly gone–faith in many of the specifics of Catholicism (and, for that matter, Christianity), that is. I’m not happy about this; I miss the days when I believed. And I used to be quite the believer, or at least I found solace of a kind in the details of Catholic dogma and doctrine. But my “faith” was likely always a fairly thin soup, and in recent years it seems to have drained away almost completely. Here are a few examples of where my thinking is at this point:
I’m not sure what I’m asking for here. Just thoughts, I suppose. As I say, I miss the days when I believed.
- The Bible as the word of God and Church Tradition as a rock of truth—who says?
- A “personal relationship with Jesus”–I can’t say I’ve ever had that, and frankly I don’t know what it even means. My guess is that it’s likely just a set of emotions, thoughts, feelings, that a person consoles himself with—not an objective reality. Impossible to say, really. Human psychology is complex.
- “Just ask for faith and you will receive it.” This sort of advice requires an intellectual maneuver akin to pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps—i.e., you have to have a certain amount of faith to even make the plea. If you don’t believe in a thing, how do you “make yourself” believe in that thing?
- “Just pray about it.” Same problem as above.
