Thank you for correcting me on the holiness matter. God bless.

JW and LDS are not Christian. And yes I do read the Catechism. Please point me to the text which you are referring to. Thank you.
Although I personally agree with you on the JW’s and the LDS, that point is open to debate for many. Paragraph 830 onward in the Catechism covers the Catholic teaching on salvation.

When JW’s come up and offer me their stuff I just shake my head. If I have the presence of mind, I try to engage them in conversation. Offering one’s own literature isn’t going to work because they are forbidden to read it. So I believe in saying: “Your organization has prophesied the end of the world and other major events that didn’t happen. All the explanations the WT uses for that were obviously written after the fact. The NWT was made by a group that included people who didn’t know Hebrew at all and very few who knew it well. It was one of the least thorough translation jobs on the shelves today. Even so, the NWT itself has many clues to Jesus’ divinity. The stake story contradicts lots of evidence of crucifixions by Romans. It would be like denying the use of an electric chair in America and saying someone was executed in an electric barstool. Absurd. I would love to get together and talk more. What is your schedule?”

I finally went mini-ballistic on a Jehovah’s Witness last week.

First, a little background information. Walking down the main shopping street in our community on a Saturday is like running the gauntlet. There are two moving nests of Jehovah’s Witnesses that lie in wait to ambush the passerby, shoving The Watchtower in your face and sternly warning you that you’re GOING TO HELL unless you do what THEY tell you to do. Then there is Pentecostal Pastor Dude, who stands on the corner, in front of his little church, waving his Bible, trying to make eye contact, and warning you that you’re GOING TO HELL unless you do what HE tells you to do. Then there is the inevitable pair of Mormon missionaries, warning you that you can’t get to heaven unless you do what THEY tell you to do. Then there are the Nazarenes, who go door-to-door, warning you that you’re GOING TO HELL unless you do what THEY tell you to do. I’ve been told by numerous Baptists that I’m GOING TO HELL unless I do what THEY tell me to do. I’ve been warned by two different Mormons, on this board alone, that I’m GOING TO HELL unless I become a Mormon.

So, last Saturday, lugging a 40 pound bag of dog food on my shoulder, I absent mindedly strolled past one of the JW traps. Woman jumps out in front of me, waving The Watchtower, and starts the pitch. Tried to be nice and tell her “not interested,” but she wouldn’t stop and warned me that I’m GOING TO HELL unless I listened to her. Not being in the mood to be banished off to the eternal lake of fire that day, I plopped down the sack of kibble and asked her, in a not-so-polite tone of voice, “what gives YOU the right to banish ME off to HELL???!!! You don’t know me, you don’t anything about me, so what gives you that right? Like, just who do you think you are? Etc., etc., etc.” In any case, she lowered her Watchtower and high-tailed it back to the nest. I don’t think that one will bother me again anyway.

Don’t these idiots realize how STUPID they sound? It is absolutely beyond my comprehension how anybody with a marginally functional cerebral cortex can subscribe to this kind of nonsense. And it’s not just the connoisseurs of “Elvis painted on velvet” and the like either. I’ve known some very respectable and well educated people who firmly believe that everybody BURNS IN HELL, except those who believe and practice as they do. Like the qualification for heaven is that one strictly follows a specific set of tenets. In addition to totally defying common sense, it’s precisely the sort of thing Jesus warned us AGAINST. What ever happened to “love your neighbor as yourself?” Seems to me like these people have totally missed the point.
Hmmm, this from a member of the RCC that also takes a similar stand toward those outside of the faith? I find this amusing.

from this one could guess you are of the belief no matter which church one attends that it is all good.just who are these people to which Jesus says go away i don’t KNOW you…it is quite obvious that these people know Jesus.

Actually, that is NOT the stand taken by Catholic Church; in fact it is the opposite of the stand taken by the Catholic Church.

If you wish the comment on the teachings of the Catholic Church, perhaps you should first learn the teachings of the Catholic Church.

catholics are guilty of this too
everyone’s hell bound who’s not part of the lil boys club
Maybe it’s something the protestant’s inherited from their catholic predecessor?

Kill em all and let God sort them out. Just kidding. Pray for them and then pray some more.

Ár n-athair, atá ar neamh, Go naofar d’ainm. Go tdaga do riocht.Go ndéantar do thoil ar an talamh, Mar dhéantar ar neamh. Ár n-arán lathiúl tabhair dúinn inniú, Agus maith dúinn ár bhfiacha, Mar mhaithimid dár bhfeichiúnaithe féin. Agus n’a lig sinn I gcathú, ach saor sinn ó olc. Amen.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say I recognize this as the Lord’s Prayer.

I’ve been wondering which language: Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic, Sindarin Elvish… ? It’s certainly not Klingon. 🤓

It’s Irish. I’m not Elvish at all although I do sometimes sing Elvis songs, but I can’t sing in Elvish either.

Come to think of it, reciting the Lord’s prayer in Irish, Latin, or Greek would be an EXCELLENT way to respond to any in-your-face JW. When I’ve tried this kind of thing before they’ve run away thinking they were being cursed. :hypno:

The Catholic Church affirms the reality of hell inasmuch as it acknowledges the state of separation from God. It affirms the validity of various other religious traditions (most especially Judaism and Islam), as they contain in a veiled way the same Mystery and all worship the one Creator God: the Merciful, the Judge of human hearts and intentions.

It is firmly convinced that salvation is made available to all, and may be achieved by all, in their own legitimate faith traditions. What’s more, the Church teaches that, as it is not revealed truth, we may never truly know if a single soul has been condemned to hell. We may canonize saints and recognize them, but the inverse is not true.

Praying is a good response.

If they say: “You are going to hell if you don’t believe what we say!”

Just simply respond “I love you.”

That will give them much more to think about then loosing control. Because when you loose control you just validate their false beliefs.

Yours in Christ.

Really? You need to research Pope Benedict’s recent comments. Also, the poster just above yours also seems to think this way. It has been most obvious in church history.

Easy does it.

catholics are not planning in killing no one. although we have to accept the fact that heresy is growing everywhere and many are being deceived. Oh wait, it is in the Bible that toward the end many will be deceived even the elect may fall into those heresies.

:highprayer: :signofcross:

Dia dhuit a Fearghál!

Loving the human individual is of course necessary and proper. However, that does not mean that one must passively accept intrusively aggressive approaches by people spewing blatant heresy; and particularly when these people persist in this activity after one has already politely declined to listen to the message, and particularly when some of these people, like the Mormons, use institutionalized deceptive tactics to entice others to join them in their heresy. When possible, I do choose to ignore or avoid them; however, other than being a waste of time, I don’t see anything really wrong with calling them on it either – within reason. It is, after all, they who have initiated the contact, refused a genteel rebuff and persisted in proselytizing. This sort of thing isn’t nearly as common in Éire as it is here (and I do know that from much personal experience), however constantly being told you’re gonna hangout for eternity with the devil and minions gets pretty old around here.

I guess we’ll have agree to disagree, but believing stuff like you can’t enter into God’s presence unless you know the secret passwords and handshakes is still pretty GOOFY in my book……

Slán,
Mata
I guess what I wa trying to say in a non-Pauline manner was the following:
4Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up; 5Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil; 6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth with the truth; 7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8Charity never falleth away: whether prophecies shall be made void, or tongues shall cease, or knowledge shall be destroyed. 9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10But when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away. 11When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But, when I became a man, I put away the things of a child. 12We see now through a glass in a dark manner; but then face to face. Now I know in part; but then I shall know even as I am known. 13And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.

coach the word KNOW as used in the gospels means a intimate physical relation.ie Mary did not know a man…Catholics are the only ones privilaged to have this physical relation by means of the Eucharist. It is not our right to recieve Him but a gift of Himself from God.IOW we don’t deserve to recieve the Eucharist just bc we claim to be Catholic, only by the gift of faith can we recieve Him.

Since you claim to be in the know on this, why not enlighten the rest of us regarding a comment by the Holy Father that all non-Catholics are going to Hell?

Dude, if you just go read the material yourself before you start commenting you can avoid presenting yourself as an ignorant bigot. For the sake of your congregation, I hope you exercise better diligence when preparing your sermons. You can find the Catechism of the Catholic Church on-line, and the Catholic teaching on salvation begins at paragraph 830.

That’s the straight dope, right from the horse’s mouth.
