who believes in Noah's ark?

I went to school in Loiusiana…Lousiana as I used to say. I’m actually from San Antonio, but live in Lafayette for most of my teen and college days. I went to St. Joseph Seminary College. In fact, after reverting I contacte a former seminarian friend that is now the Spiritual Director in Houma-Thibodaux… It was awesome. He said mass for us in our hotel with the Bishop’s permision. I’m planning on going on a mission trip next summer. And I hope to go with him to World Youth Day when the next one comes about. He’s like a brother to me. I love him very much. My wife and kids loved him too.

But back to the subject. I dont’ struggle with this one anymore. It’s ends up disturbing the peace for no good reason. My B.S. is in Geography…with premed and engineering curriculum. I love science and math but I really LOVE God more than my own prideful ways of trying to know everything.

BTW: my mother’s maiden name is Theriot…the “h” is silent and the e is short, the “i” sounds like a long “e”, the “o” is long and then the last “t” is silent. Tear - eey - oh …my way of making it clear.

I think there is a historical basis to the Noah story, but I don’t believe that all human kind and all animal kind was saved on a boat that wasn’t big enough to hold all species of animals in the world…even in baby form.

Best guess…local flood, regional merchant washed out to see by a freak flash flood.
 
The Sumerian story of Gilgamesh is most likely the source of the Noah story. It was passed down orally for generations until it made it’s way into the book of Genesis by either priestly scribe. It is fiction…religious fiction…religious myth to teach but not fact.

I graduated from Lafayette High in 1979 and went to the seminary the following year. Go Mighty Lions.

That’s how ya spell it cher… You’d think I knew that… I took French my first year of college…Mon Pere’[don’t know how to insert a ancent agrave] Martin. Benedictine Monk/Priest. He smoked Camel cigarettes and Luck Stripes when I got his hands on them. Yes, he died of cancer not too many years later.

AAAhhhheeeeee! Very cool. Thanks for to booste. I’ve been down since yeserday. I found out that although I was the best candidate for a particular GIS teaching job in a Magnet school they gave the class to another engineering teacher…I was really hoping for it. I’ve been seriously looking into teaching. The pay in Texas in my area is really good now. If we both teach we can go to Rome for the long trip. I have a brother that lives in Geneva…
 
Why shouldn’t the story be true?

God is God. God could take a ‘dimensioned’ corporeal object like an Ark and could make it ‘Big enough’ on the inside to contain a CONTINENT or even a WORLD if he chose. (My higher math is not great, but consider that He could very easily have opened up a ‘dimension’, portal, or whatever’ IN the Ark such that everything ‘fit.’

As C.S. Lewis wrote in “The Last Battle”, when the protagonist was thrown into what appeared to be a small stable from the OUTSIDE. . .the INSIDE of that stable was INFINITY. Yet from the outside, it looked nothing like what it REALLY was.

Lucy Pevensie compares this stable to ANOTHER stable on our world which once contained “much more than it appeared to” (meaning, it contained the infant Christ.)

Something to ponder. . .
 
No one has said that the story shouldn’t or couldn’t be true. They are just saying that we Catholics are not required to take the story literally. Many Catholics do take it literally, some do not.

Aieeewaaay! Mais look out! My mother graduated from Lafayette High. I went my 9th grade year, but then we moved to Kaliste Saloom and I graduated from Comeaux in 92’! I still root for the Lions and the Spartans. Went to USL when it was USL but transferred later to Southern Miss and graduated there. Both of my parents graduated from USL in '76. I miss Bayous on the Teche, Vermillionville, the Festival Acadiane de la Louisiane, Cajun Heartland State Fair, the crawfish festival in Breaux Bridge, the frog festival in Rayne, and Floyd Sonnier.

I bet getting blasted out by Katrina was a sign I should have stayed at UL@

–btw: the name change bothers me. I miss the big yellow chicken with his bass drum, U-S-L, U-S-L. The new name doesnt gel the way the old one did.

If you grew up in Breaux Bridge then we know some of the same families. I have several fraternity brothers from there…Glenn Chitty, Lewis LeBlanc, …more…But one of the State Rep’s son there was a frat bro… Mark Lerelle was also a Frat bro. small world.
