If only we had some authoritative figure or some info from the earliest writings of Christianity to help us better understand what this verse meant…
…oh wait.
…oh wait.
Scripture is the inspired word of God written by men through the Holy Spirit. Isn’t this getting off the topic. Lets try to keep it on topic please. No sarcasm, I assure you. Scripture wasn’t written by men?
It’s not off topic at all. You were the one asserting that grace does not come through things. Yet you just stated that the reason you know that Jesus died for your sins is from Scripture. Which is a thing, written by the Church, with the authority of God the Holy Spirit behind it. Yet you state that Absolution by a man in the Church with the authority of God the Son behind it is false. You’re applying one standard for Scripture and another for Holy Absolution.Scripture is the inspired word of God written by men through the Holy Spirit. Isn’t this getting off the topic. Absolutely excellent. It’s not off topic at all. You were the one asserting that grace does not come through things. Yet you just stated that the reason you know that Jesus died for your sins is from Scripture. Which is a thing, written by the Church, with the authority of God the Holy Spirit behind it. The point is that grace comes from God through mediate means that He has instituted. Just as you cannot know that Jesus died for your sins without the mediate means of grace (Holy Scripture), you cannot know that God has forgiven you without the mediate means of grace in Baptism, the Supper, or Absolution.
.I toltaly agree. We are to confess to the presbyter as James tell us in James 5 and as Jesus tells the apostles in John 20rev kevin;6569602]We are not to confess our sins to one another. I don’t go and confess my sin to someone who I have not sinned against
.What if you sinned against your wife by the sin of adultery.? You could ask her to forgive you and she could forgive you but that doesn’t mean that God has forgiven you. God has given the Church men that have the authority to forgive sin in the name of Christ. THat is exacltly what Paul is saying " Anyone whom you forgive I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the person of Christ" 2 Cor. 2:10If I sinned against someone then I confess my sin to them and ask them for forgiveness
Now your twisting what I said and meant. You can not buy Grace or do anything to earn God’s grace, I.E. things. Scripture tell us that Jesus died for our sins, Scripture is not how you get God’s grace,It’s not off topic at all. You were the one asserting that grace does not come through things. Yet you just stated that the reason you know that Jesus died for your sins is from Scripture. Which is a thing, written by the Church, with the authority of God the Holy Spirit behind it. I mentioned nothing about earning God’s grace. You deny that God’s grace comes from the preaching of Scripture? This is not the view that Paul had. You would know nothing about God’s grace if God did not come to you through His word and through his sacraments (even if you deny them). God’s grace does not come to man in a vacuum nor fall out of the sky. It comes through tangible realities. God reconciled Himself to mankind through a flesh and bones Jesus. Now your twisting what I said and meant. You can not buy Grace or do anything to earn God’s grace, I.E. things. Scripture tell us that Jesus died for our sins, Scripture is not how you get God’s grace
I mean simply that God reaches mankind through means. His appointed means are Word and Sacrament. The promise of God is attached to these means and they are fully efficacious. I can trust that God has forgiven my sins through Christ because my Baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and Absolution demonstrate this to me. They are the visible word of God. And God’s word never returns empty. Hence, they are the means whereby faith is created in the previously dead human heart.Where do you see you cannot know that God has forgiven you without the mediate means of grace in Baptism, the Supper, or Absolution?
What James is saying in 5:16 is that Christ has made it possible for us to go directly to God for forgiveness, Now confessing our sins to each other still has an important place. !) If we have sinned against an individual, we must ask them to forgive us. 2) If our sin has affected the church, we must confess it publicly. 3) If you need loving support if you are struggling with a sin, you should confess that sin to those who are able to provide that suppot..I toltaly agree. We are to confess to the presbyter as James tell us in James 5 and as Jesus tells the apostles in John 20

Paul is clearly saying that he hasn’t forgiven by his own power and authority but what he has forgiven has been done in the person of Christ.
As Matthew tells us this authority to forgive sin has been given to" men" Mat. 9:8
No where did I talk about sin. What happened in that verse was Christ gave them specifically the power to forgive or notDoesn’t the bible say we all should confess our sins to each other?
Unconfessed sins are retained. What kind of sin would they retain? If you confess your sin and truly mean it then your sins will be forgiven. How would they know if you truly meant it or not? When I was Catholic and went to confession (which I did not like to do) the priest never retained any of my sins. Are there certain ones that they will retain if so why?
Now I’m a bit confused, RK. In post #19 of the Non-Catholic (protestant) authority thread, you wrote:Doesn’t the bible say we all should confess our sins to eachother?
No.If Jesus gave the apostles ALL His authority, and one is to forgive sin, that He has, wouldn’t that make the apostles Jesus’/God’s equal since they have the same authority?
Acting in the person of Christ. We all have the authority for forgive some who sinned against us personally, but not the authority to tell others that their sins are forgiven when they have not sinned against you personally.
As an example?Jesus died so our sins may be forgiven. When Jesus was baptized did he have sin, no there was no sin in him to be washed away or forgiven. So why was he baptized?
Praying is communicating with God…that is the context that Catholics usually use.I don’t pray to God and ask him for forgiveness. I talk to him.
James 5:16 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed.”We are not to confess our sins to one another. I don’t go and confess my sin to someone who I have not sinned against. If I sinned against someone then I confess my sin to them and ask them for forgiveness.
lets put it into context a bit more…Could it possibly mean the Jesus gave the disciples their Spirit power and Spirit guided mission, their mission being to preach the Gospel of Jesus so people’s sins might be forgiven because God is the only one who can forgive sin. Now Jesus gave the disciples the privilege of telling new believers that their sins have been forgiven because they have accepted Jesus’ message.
I confess mortal sins to a priest. Better safe than sorry. And confession has been the greatest builder of humility in my own life.We had this discussion on another thread but it was off the topic so I wanted to continue the discussion.
The question is who has the authority to forgive sin?
John 20:23 has been brought up
“If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you refuse to forgive them, they are unforgiven.”
What does this mean to you and why?
I would like to add some Lutherans and Episcopalians/Anglicans as well.I confess mortal sins to a priest. Better safe than sorry. And confession has been the greatest builder of humility in my own life.
Why do you worry so much about why Orthodox and Catholics confess to a priest?
You aren’t Orthodox or Catholic and really aren’t set up for confession to a priest, but still your sins are forgiven. So why fret over it?
No fret like I said just wandering why.QUOTE=mark a;6572412]I confess mortal sins to a priest. Better safe than sorry. And confession has been the greatest builder of humility in my own life.I 'm glad that it is the greatest buider in you life. But to me God is the safest.

I can relate a story that happened recently in our parish. What kind of sin would they retain? If you confess your sin and truly mean it then your sins will be forgiven. How would they know if you truly meant it or not? When I was Catholic and went to confession (which I did not like to do) the priest never retained any of my sins.
