Who Else Saw The Plates Besides Smith?

They have great faith. Their faith is greater than yours because they have reason also. Faith and reason. You have faith but no reasoning. You cannot discern between truth and falsehood because your acceptance of the BOM is based on “feeling”. You ignore all the evidence that the BOM is false. The plates never existed and if you would read the BOM with an open mind and use your God given power of reasoning you would know that it is false. Jesus did not go to the New World when he left the Old World. The bible tells us He assended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God. “Then, after speaking to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven and took his seat to God’s right hand”. Mark 16:19. He will not come again till the end of the world.

Melanie, of course you’re right. Jesus told the Apostles that if they came to a place and they refused to accept the word then they were to leave that place and shake the dust from their feet. I’m not too smart as I should be doing that and I probably will soon. Just let them be as you cannot reason with them.

Does the Bible say another book would come forth? Yes it does.
No, it does not.

When I was an LDS missionary I told that lie every day, using as a proof text Ezekiel 37:16-19:
16 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and for all the house of Israel his companions:
17 And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.
18 And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these?
19 Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.
20 And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes.
  • Ezekiel 37:16-19 (KJV)
After I was free of Mormonism and could think for myself, I actually studied the entire bible, including all of Ezekiel 37. It is obvious that it is not a prophecy of the coming forth of the BOM. The real meaning of this “proof text” is explained in the next two verses:
21 And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all.
Ezekiel 37:21-22 (KJV)
The nation of Israel was divided into two kingdoms in 930 BC and was still divided during Ezekiel’s time - the Southern kingdom of Judah and the Northern kingdom of Israel (often refered to as “Ephraim”). This passage is a prophecy of the reuniting of these two kingdoms into one united nation of Israel following a period of diaspora.

To cast this passage as a prediction of the BOM is a cruel deception.

What is your obsession with the golden plates? The point is, you don’t believe in the Ten Commandments because you have seen or touched them. You believe in them because you have a history that tells you of them; they are written about in a book that you accept as scripture. We have no, repeat, NO, independent verification of the existence of them outside the OT.

None.

Zip.

Nada.

yet you believe.

At the same time, we have eyewitness accounts from men who did see and touch the BOM plates, and you do not believe. My point is that neither set of documents can be proven empirically… and if you accept the one set as ‘real’ without that empirical proof, then you cannot demand such proof for the other. You must use other means to decide that they never existed.

I am posting a defense because I happen to believe that a: they existed and b:what was written upon them is very valuable.

…and I’m simply pointing out that you are using a double standard when you accept the Ten Commandments as having been written upon stone and given to Moses—and insist that the golden plates must be produced before you will so much as look at what was claimed to have been written upon them.
Here are some facts one must consider before making a decision as to their actual existence. . Smith’s mother, Lucy, never saw the plates for Joseph warned her that to look at them meant instant death. . Emma, Smith’s wife, claimed she “saw” the plates but they were covered by a cloth. Martin Harris, who was Joseph’s secretary in the writing down of the translation, never got the chance to really see the plates although the two men worked in the same room. Joseph gave Harris the same warning: that the wrath of God would strike him down if he tried to see the plates. . Joseph claimed that one day he received a revelation from God that he must have three witnesses to prove the authenticity of the plates. (Doctrine & Covenants Sec. 5). Joseph chose Oliver Cowdery, Martin Harris and David Whitmer. He took the three men out into the woods where supposedly an angel showed them the plates. . Martin Harris was later questioned by a lawyer: “Did you see the plates with your bodily eyes?” Harris replied: “I did not see them as I do that pencil case, yet I saw them with the eyes of faith.” (The Confusion of Tongues, Chas. W. Ferguson p. 371) All three men told different stories as to what actually happened in the woods. All three later quarreled with Smith and left the church. Joseph described them as liars, forgerers, slander-bearers and thieves. Joseph even claimed that in July of 1828 he had received a revelation from God in which the Almighty described Martin Harris as wicked. (Doctrine & Covenants Sec. 3) Joseph’s assessment of the integrity of the three divinely appointed witnesses comes as a great surprise to a sincere inquirer. It is only fair to ask the following questions: How could God have chosen men of such evil character and reputation? Since Smith is supposed to be a true prophet of God, his evaluation of them had to be correct. How then could anyone take their testimony to the plates as trustworthy? Why is it that the three could not agree as to what actually took place in the woods? If they had been given a truly divine sign with the actual appearance to them of an angel from heaven, how could they have doubted Smith from that moment on? Cowdery and Harris were supposed to have returned to the Church. David Whitmer remained out. He claimed that he also was a true prophet from God and rejected Smith’s later revelations. (Read Mormonism, Shadow or Reality? the Tanners, pp. 52-59 for a careful documentation on the witnesses) . Next Joseph produced eight more witnesses although there is no evidence that he did so with divine approval. Perhaps he was worried about the unreliability of the first three of whom he had such a low opinion. Of these eight witnesses, four of them were Whitmers, relatives of the David Whitmer, one of the three original witnesses. The fifth witness was Hiram Page who had married a Whitmer daughter. The last three were Joseph’s own father and two brothers. This is surely too close a family circle to impress an honest investigator looking for impartiality among a group of witnesses. When Our Lord arose from the dead, the Bible states He appeared to many different people and at different times and places. Jesus offered sufficient and reasonable proof that He was alive again. . These eight witnesses stated they saw the plates. Were they the very same set of plates the first witnesses saw? If Martin Harris who was divinely chosen to see the plates had to admit that he did not see them with his bodily eyes but only with the “eyes of faith”, just how then did the other eight who were not chosen by divine revelation “see” the plates? Of the eight, five, the Whitmers and Page, turned against Smith and left the Church. . Lastly, in a sermon delivered by President and Prophet Brigham Young in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, June 5, 1859 the claim for the actual existence of a set of gold plates from God is further weakened: “Some of the witnesses of the Book of Mormon, who handled the plates and conversed with the angels of God, were afterwards LEFT TO DOUBT AND TO DISBELIEVE THEY HAD EVER SEEN AN ANGEL. One of the Quorum of Twelve, a young man FULL OF FAITH and good works, prayed and the vision of his mind was opened, and the angel of God came and laid the plates before him, AND HE SAW AND HANDLED THEM, and SAW THE ANGEL, and CONVERSED with him as he would one of his friends; but after apostacy, and has continued to contend this work. There are hundreds in a similar condition.”
(Journal of Discourses Vol. 7 p. 164)
From the facts an impartial investigator can only conclude that the evidence for the actual existence of a set of golden plates from God is just too weak to merit a reasonable acceptance of Joseph Smith’s claim for them.

Hi Rick,

Well, I wasn’t looking to be “right” ~ but thanks. I just wanted to make people aware of the IGNORE feature in case they had never used it before.

There are a few people who come in asking questions in this area of the forum that are interested in genuine dialogue. Naturally, we welcome the opportunity to help them, answer their questions as best we can, clear up any misconceptions, etc.

But after spending awhile in this forum it becomes pretty clear that most non-Catholics come in with an agenda to promote. Sometimes it takes a few posts for the evidence to develop, but that is all too often the result. I submit that we can make better use of our time than engaging in endless arguments about such things as ~
  • the Real Presence & transubstantiation
  • whether XXXX (fill in the blank) are Christian
  • who wrote the Book of Mormon
  • etc.
I appreciate your scriptural reference ~ right on point! 👍

Clarification, please: I thought Mormons and Latter Day Saints were one in the same and that “Mormons” preferred the term LDS over Mormon. May you please clarify for me? Thank you.
Now that’s a conundrum: AND it’s a bit of irony that has me at odds with my fellow Mormons.

Y’see, a great many LDS claim that they are Mormons, and the only Mormons there are; if you aren’t LDS, you aren’t Mormon.

Trouble is, there are a great many breakaway sects that believe that the Book of Mormon is scripture, and so claim to BE Mormon. Well…since “Mormon” was originally a pejorative term thrown at us by our enemies (rather like “Christian” was in the very early days) and it was meant to refer to those who believed in this Book of Mormon, then…oops.

I figure it’s ‘sauce for the goose’ time.

You are a Mormon if you believe that the Book of Mormon is scripture. This means that even those very weird Art Bulla types can call themselves Mormons.

Drives me nuts, but hey.

However, there is this: if there ever comes a time when everybody (including all the Mormons) agrees that Mormons are not Christian, then by golly, only members of the CoJCoLDS can be MORMON.

Until then?

We’re all stuck.

They are not left out. Never were. That is your LDS interpretation.
Ah, but Rebecca, WE are the ones who claim that they were not left out. You are the one who is claiming that they were–for over 1500 years.

Jesus cited from the KJV of the Bible? You really believe this?

And BoM people, in the Americas, hundreds of years before the existence of the KJV, also copied from the KJV? It just get better.
No, Rebecca. JOSEPH quoted from the KJV.

It seems quite logical to me that Joseph, being familiar with the KJV, and coming upon passages of Isaiah, etc,. that had already been translated (and that translation being found in the KJV that he was familiar with) would simply plug in that already existing translation.

It’s called not reinventing the wheel.

If anything, it shows Joseph’s very high opinon of the KJV, that he trusted that translation enough to use it.

Besides, why on earth would ANYBODY struggle to translate Isaiah when somebody had already done it? I have enough problems READING him.

I want to make sure I understand what you said above. I take it to mean that in translating the BOM that Joseph Smith would recognize the plates as having Isaiah and instead of continuing with that translation he simply inserted the passages of Isaiah from the KJV in its place. Is that correct?

I dunno, seems fairly reasonable to me.

Well that is certainly a revelation. I guess that would explain why several passages in the BOM are almost exact copies of the KJV. Well now we know how that came to be. I guess like you said, “why reinvent the wheel” it’s easy and faster to just copy those passages straight from the KJV instead of going through the lengthly translation process. Thank you for that information.

His will was to provide a support for the Bible, and the only book of scripture that confirms the NT IS The Holy Book of Mormon. Why are you refusing God’s will?
Jesus did not send a book as His Advocate. This is heresy.

Very ironic coming from a person who believes that scripture is correct as far as it is translated correctly.

Mormonism” is a term that describes the religious, ideological and cultural elements of the Latter Day Saint movement.

The Latter Day Saint movement is a group of Restorationist religious denominations and adherents who follow at least some of the teachings and revelations of Joseph Smith, Jr., publisher of the Book of Mormon in 1830. The Latter Day Saint movement is one of a number of separate movements, known collectively as Restorationism, intending to transcend Protestant denominationalism, and to restore a form of Christianity thought to be more consistent with the New Testament.

List of sects in the Latter Day Saint movement.

Here on this forum, I have seen people use the term “Smithians” or the names of leaders of particular sects, such as Brighamite for those who followed Brigham Young (LDS), Strangite for those who followed James Strang, etc.

Other well known restorationist churches (not Mormon) are the Seventh-day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Iglesia ni Cristo.

Didn’t I say, and didn’t the Apostles teach:

CHRIST DIED FOR ALL

I’m not sure what you don’t understand about that statement. Seems pretty clear to me.

We need to remember that Jesus HIMSELF is the WORD of God. Some people seem to miss that truth. They seem to get hung up in some text. That’s not the point. I submit that they need to NOTICE everything they’re meant to see ~

in the words of Fr. John Corapi ~

TRUTH is not a someTHING it is a someBODY, His name is Jesus Christ…

Jesus = Truth

Becca ~ I think of you as a best friend that I have yet to see. God willing someday the circumstances of that will change. For now, I thank God for you!
