any insight on who or what is the authority for a Christian to follow. THere are a few options;

The Pope
The Bible
The Holy Spirit
Scripture

which ?

In the Catholic Church, we hold Sacred Tradition as passed down from the Apostles to the Early Church Fathers up to today, to be co-equal with Sacred Scripture. It is the Bishops as legitimate successors to the Apostles who are the authentic interpreter of both Tradition and Scripture. In the Catholic Church, the primacy among the Bishops resides in the person of the Bishop of Rome as the authentic successor to St. Peter, on whom our Blessed Lord founded his Church. The Bishop of Rome in a special way as well as all of the Bishops in communion with him are guided by the power of the Holy Spirit, so that the Faith which was taught to the Apostles by Christ, passed on through oral tradition, much of which was eventually compiled in the Canon of Sacred Scripture, is passed on faithfully today without error.

The Bible and Scripture are the same thing. According to the Bible, the answer is: all of the above.

Where did Scripture come from? Right, the Holy Spirit speaking through the prophets, the psalmist, the apostles, et cetera.

Where does the Holy Spirit take what He says? From Christ, and thus from the Father.

Where did the Bible come from? That is, who compiled the Canon of the Bible? The apostles (that is, by apostolic succession) lead by the successor of Peter, who holds the episcopal see of Rome, considered since the very beginning the “mother and head” of all the churches.

Where did the apostles and their successors - lead by the successor of Peter - get this authority? From Christ, who (a) gave them a greater share in the Spirit, (b) promised that the Spirit had many more things to reveal them, (c) told them that to them were revealed the secrets of the Kingdom, and (d) told the rest of the people that those who hear the apostles hear him, and those who reject them reject him. Finally, through Philip and the Ethiopian the Spirit showed that the apostles were essential for understanding and explaining the Scriptures.

To the Pope, Vicar of Christ, is the primacy and a special gift of infallibility in matters of faith and morals - promises given to Peter and his successors in office by Christ Himself, who (a) to him gave the keys of the Kingdom and the power to bind and loose, (b) to him gave the order of taking care of his sheep, (c) for him He prayed in a special way to the Father, that his faith may not fail, so that he may confirm his brethren.

Ultimately all authority goes back to Christ, the high priest. All other priests and bishops, by apostolic succession, simply act in the person of Christ. Already the Fathers of the Church, often disciples of the apostles who personally knew Christ, said: “follow the bishop as you follow Christ, for where the bishop is, there also is the Church”. Already in the earliest days the see of Rome and Peter’s successors were acknowledged with a primacy in the episcopal leadership. There can be, thus, no doubt about who to follow: the Church governed by Peter’s successor and the bishops in communion with him.

The Sacred Scripture is holy, but is not God. It is God’s word, but not the Word, who is God, and became flesh in Christ our Lord. We hold Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition to be one, according to the words of Paul, who exhorted us to hold on to the tradition, both in writing and by word of mouth.

If Scripture alone had sufficed, then Christ, the divine legislator and living Word, would not have quoted and reinterpreted Scripture by often saying: “you have heard it was said…but I say to you…” or (regarding divorce) “Moses gave you that law because your hearts were hard, but in the beginning it was not so … What God has united, let no man divide”. Also, if Scripture alone had sufficed, we would still hold on to the tenets of the Old Covenant. But new Scripture, the “New Testament”, was incorporated into the Canon of Holy Bible to show the fulfillment of the Old Testament by grace - or are we also to reject the Acts and the Letters of the Apostles since they are added to the Canon of the Bible by the Catholic Church but are not part of the ancient Scriptures?

You forgot the Church. Jesus founded a Church (Matthew 16:18 - uncontested)… Jesus gave that Church all authority on earth (Matthew 18:15-18). Jesus said to take disputes to the Church as the final authority in all matters (Matthew 15:18-19). Paul wrote to Timothy, whose father he was in the faith, that the Church is the pillar and foundation of truth (1 Timothy 3:15).

Paul could not settle the circumcision question using the scriptures - they were of no help. Paul set the scripturess aside and went to the Church (Acts 15). Once the Church spoke, and wrote a letter, the matter was settled for all time,

The Church has the authority. The Pope is simply the head of the Church.

Are authority is in following the Will of God. You understand the Word, and strive to become a saint, and you Will know.
  1. Shelter from Diabolic Vulnerabilities
  2. Understand the Gospel
  3. Fast and Pray (Rosary War)
  4. Help those who struggle to meet their basic needs
    Live materialistically basic
    Merciful and enduring
The above is what is generally required to avoid Hell; not all study the Word, I do.

Great answers above…Here is my take.

In asking who has THE authority you seem to be creating a division that does not exist. Authority is not a matter of “either or” in many cases. Rather, authority exists in different ways by different people/things at different levels. recognizing this, one can basically start at any point on your list and get to the others, seeing how they fit together to make a cohesive whole.

So - What are the things that we recognize as important and authoritative and how do they interact.
Let’s begin with Bible. As someone else already mentioned…the Bible and Scripture is, for all practical purposes the same thing.
Everyone agrees that the writings of the Bible are the inspired words of God and are inerrant in their original autograph. Because of this inspiration and inerrancy, it carries weight (authority) among us. However - as has been demonstrated repeatedly - the inerrancy of Scripture does not = infallibility of understanding. There needs to be something besides Scripture to aid in proper understanding and application.

In the Christian world, the source of guidance alluded to above is the Holy Spirit, sent by God to lead us into all Truth. It is actually He who has determined what was to be written and what was to be compiled into the Bible for our benefit. So - the Holy Spirit and the Holy Scriptures become inseparable in this sense.
However…The Holy Spirit is not the only Spirit active in the world. So one must discern whether it is truly the Holy Spirit that is leading them or some other spirit (or combination thereof). Christ our King, in His great mercy and wisdom, gave us a mechanism for this discernment and protection. It is called the Church and you embody that in your list above by mentioning the office of the Pope.

Recognizing the inerrancy of Scripture and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, but also recognizing that individuals can still err, we find that Christ instituted a community. The institution of this community was important enough that the Holy Spirit caused it to be recorded in Holy Scripture. (See how these things tie together?) The Greek word for this is Ekklesia which is translated “Church”. Scripture records Jesus using this term only twice. Both times in Matthew, and both times associated with the authority to bind and loose “whatever”.
In Mt 18:15-18 are a set of instructions on how to handle disputes within the ekklesia culminating with the statement - from our King Himself - to “tell it to the Church” and then to “listen to the Church” for it is the Church which as the authority to bind and loose whatever.
Later - in Acts 15 we can actually see this set of instructions played out. The local issue in Antioch ultimately resulted in a council to resolve the matter.
So - in this we see how the Church is designated by the holy Spirit and functions for the purpose of acting as “the pillar and bulwark of Truth”, protecting and guiding.

Finally - the office of the Pontiff is a very important - “the buck stops here” - authority within the Church, but it must be remembered that the Pope does not stand above or apart from the Church and teachings proposed or promulgated by the Holy Father do not come about in a vacuum but are the result of much prayer, study deliberation and (name removed by moderator)ut from other members of the magisterium.

So - in summary, the Holy Spirit exercises Authority through the Church of which the Holy Father is head and within which Scripture holds a central place.

Hope this helps.

Peace
James

The authority rests in the Church that Christ founded…and which has all of the above. The four marks of the Church…the true Church are it is ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC.

Actually the Holy Spirit inspired the New Testament suthors to write the New Testament Scriptures and the Pope (Damasus I in A.D. 382) to declare which writings are, in fact, scripture.

The Holy Spirit who inspires the scriptures/bible and appointed the Pope to be the head of his one church.

But this is like asking "any insight on who or what is the authority for children to follow. Here are a few options;

Excellent point. A lot of times people don’t take a real look at what they are asking. If they did, it would be apparent that the question is nonsensical.

I was once asked, who do you follow, Jesus or the Church. That’s like asking, who do you follow God or the Bible. You really can’t separate Jesus and His Church. That’s pretty much a false dilemma, a well know type of fallacy.

[Protestant troll alert]

Perhaps the answer you’re seeking–the one which the Prophet Martin Luther prescribed–is none of the above. Rather, one may properly look to their own interpretation of the Bible, as the ultimate authority–and thereby select the ‘church’ to which he shall affiliate–amongst the predictably resultant (of Luther’s doctrine, that is)–smorgasbord of such–according to his own liking. Custom fitted to suit each individual taste.

Just as Yeshua designed it!

(We Catholics have a sense of humor too…). 😉
