Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture can help you. But if you follow Sola Scriptura I can understand your blindness to the full truth. So long as your are in the outside of the body of Christ looking in through a window how are you to understand the life lived out in Christianity with out the 5 senses of your living soul. That where God meets us in his true presence, but then you only believe in a symbolic Jesus , Christianity is not a symbolic life, it is a real life lived out in the true presence of Jesus Christ. any thing other is just a symbol that represents the fullness of Truth.

If there is no extant record of it being believed during the first three and a half centuries upon what grounds do you base your assertion that it was? Because the Pope in 1950 said so?

Good point, my friend the mathematician is very good at side stepping issues. I hope he is learning something? But authority is ultimately what I hope to relate to here of ones church.

What is stated in history is recording what already is in the present, same science applies to the trinity. It is believed, but does not get mentioned many years after the apostles leave the scene, and that is because the belief of the Trinity was under attack be heretical teachers and teachings. So the authority of the Catholic church put a stop to it, and announced the already belief in the Trinity, “Thus says the Lord” and made it doctrine that this mystery explained cannot change in belief.

These are the misgivings you have about the Catholic church’s authority. Again it is not the Pope himself or the office of bishops you disagree with , it is the divine office that gives them the authority to teach the Gospel as they were commanded to do by Jesus Christ. And you contest the divine authority of Jesus Christ.

You seem to be under the impression that the first mention of the Assumption arose in the proceedings of an ecumenical council. The first mention of the Assumption in fact appears in an appocryphal NT book in the late fourth century. You shouldn’t need me to tell you that it wasn’t “defined” in the RC Church until 1950.

It iws always sad when a thread gets hijacked.

As a Catholic, I sqay that the Pope in union with all the bishop throughout the world are the Earthly, corporeal leaders of the Church.

Many long years ago, before I fell into atheism, I was a fundamentalist Baptist. At that time, I woud have said that the authority of the Church was held jointly by the pastor of the local church and the individual parishoner.
