It may be better for me to go to a muslim forum to ask this but just generally who exactly is Jesus in Islam?

I have heard he is referred to as
-prophet
-son of Mary
-Messiah
-Word

What does this mean? I can’t find any good sources / websites that address this? WHO is Jesus in Islam, what do these names mean? I have found most explanations to be very vague or not in depth. What does ‘prophet’ mean in Islam, what does ‘son of Mary’ mean in Islam, what does ‘messiah’ mean in Islam and what does the ‘word’ mean in Islam.

I think Muslims also believe / call Jesus a ‘spirit’ sent forth from God - what does this mean?

Does anyone know?
Thanks

Muslims believe that Jesus (Isa in Arabic) was a man, sent by God to bring a message (the message of Islam). Born of the Virgin Mary (Mariam in Arabic) they believe him to be a great prophet like Abraham (Ibrahim) and Moses (Musa). However they do not attribute any divine qualities to Him.

He is Isa al Masih (Masih being a direct equivalent of ‘‘Christ’’ or ‘‘Messiah’’, meaning ‘‘anointed one’’). To the best of my knowledge, Muslims believe that Jesus will destroy al dajjal, their equivalent of the Antichrist, and dispel myths about Him, and in doing so unify the Muslim Ummah.

Hope this helps.

God bless

Peter

If you find that this thread deteriorates and you don’t feel comfortable, I might recommend for you to visit whyislam.org/forum, which has several nice posters who might be able to help you.

First, let me start with prophet. Essentially in Islam, what a “prophet” is, is a man who has been inspired by God. Muhammad was considered a prophet, but so were Abraham and Moses, even John the Baptist and his father Zechariah. Some of the prophets were called to spread the message–to warn the people about their sins, to give them hope in God’s mercy. Muslims believe that every group of people were sent a prophet, and that Muhammad was the last one, sent to all of mankind.

Muslims believe that Muhammad was a prophet, who received revelation from God–and that the Qur’an is that revelation–telling Muhammad things from the past that he wouldn’t have otherwise known. One such thing is the story of the birth of Mary, and the birth of Jesus. Muslims believe that God created Jesus (as just a man) in the womb of his mother, Mary. That is why Muslims call him the son of Mary. They believe in the virgin birth because it is in the Qur’an.

Jesus is also called “Al-Maseeh” in the Qur’an, which means the messiah. The word Maseeh, Messiah, Meshiach, literally means “anointed” in these semitic languages. Muslims do not attach any special significance to it.

When Jesus is called a “word,” the meaning is that the word is “Be.” Muslims believe Jesus was created by a word–the word “be,” as in, God says “be” and it is.

If you hear someone saying that Jesus is a spirit sent forth from God, that is pretty confusing. It’s better to say that Muslims believe Jesus has a body, and a spirit–two things which are created by God. Muslims do NOT believe that Jesus is God or that Jesus is the son of God.

I hope this answers your questions.

What LDNCatholic said above is also true.

Hi There,🙂 Long story short…

In ISLAM muslims believe that Jesus was born immaculately through virgin Mary and through the same power which had brought Eve to life and Adam into being without a father or a mother. He is the Messenger or Messiah from Allah/God. and during his cradle he speaks with people about the piousness of his mother Mary and he told that he is the messenger from Allah/God. Hope christians have this verses in Bible talking in cradle about her mother piousness.

Hope i clear your thinking about Jesus in Islam

Hello Peter,🙂

Q:1) However they do not attribute any divine qualities to Him.

Explain?

Muslims do not believe in the Divinity (i.e that He is God) of Jesus

Q:2) ‘‘Christ’’

Explain?

Christ is the Greek word for Messiah/Masih, Jesus is believed to be the Messiah by both Muslims and Chrisitans

Q:3) dispel myths about Him

Explain?

**To the best of my knowledge Muslims believe that Jesus will return to tell Christians that He is not God etc, correct me if I am wrong **

Please Explain my three questions.Thank you.

Muslims don’t care about Jesus. Ask them if they follow any of His teachings. The answer is possibly none. They talk like they respect Him and everything. Yet they destroy His place of worship.

You can depict Jesus or the bible in any media form you like and there’s no riot either by us or them. If you start messing around with the koran and Mohammed, there will be chant in the street demading your head. Ain’t that crazy!

Agree. 👍

They don’t know why on earth Jesus is called the Messiah.

They don’t know any teachings of Jesus regarding moral and life.

They mistakenly believe Jesus wrote a Gospel personally.

They say Jesus was created without a human father but have no idea the reason why.

They don’t know about the real Jesus. They have lost Jesus. In order for them to know him, they have to refer to the Bible which they grudgingly deny, at least much of it.

Exactly!

They believe that when Jesus comes back, he’ll break the cross to prove to us obstinate and stupid Christians that he never died on the cross in the first place.

They believe that Jesus will also kill all the pigs to prove to us obstinate and stupid Christians that he never told us it was okay to eat pork!

Hilarious, isn’t it? 😃 They never give up trying to tell us we’re wrong, but we know better!

That’s actually one Hadith that makes sense to me.

John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

2 Kings 18:3-4 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did. He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.

King Hezekiah: Almost a Messiah

Luke 8:30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.

Revelation 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

Luke 8:33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.

Revelation 18:21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

Genesis 11:9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

Hi

I don’t agree with your answer. In my opinion, it is only Muslims who follow Jesus. The CatholicsProtestants and denomination like them follow Paul who deviated from the way Jesus had walked on.

I love Jesus and Mary

Thanks

That’s actually not true. There is a popular American Muslim scholar named Hamza Yusuf who has just written a book with the teachings of Jesus reported in Islam. This is an article with excerps from it. Walk on Water. 🙂 This is a very short article, only some quotes about teachings of Jesus. I think you will find it very interesting.
They mistakenly believe Jesus wrote a Gospel personally.
Muslims who believe this do not base it on anything authentic. There is no proof of this in Islam.

Hi

That is however, in my opinion, **not literal **but as symbolic and as a figure of speech. The elders of the Jews thought Jesus a young man, they preferred not to talk to him but addressed Mary and wanted her to answer.

Quran uses all figures of speech.

Thanks

… and I’m about to throw up by the absurdity of it all. I am astounded at how we can be judged by the food we eat.

And how will Jesus going to break all the crosses in the world considering that muslims believe he is mere human?

Hi

And I quote here two Ahadith and then from Quran as to how it has happened:

Yushaku man aasha minkum ianyulka eisabna maryama imamun mahduyyun , hakamun iadualun yakserus saleba wa yaktulul khinzera

One who would be alive (at that time), he would meet Issa (JesusYeshua) s/o Maryam (MaryMerium) in the position of ImamMahdi (DivineGuided), a truthful judge (among faiths/religions); he would break the Cross (with arguments) and kill the swine. (Masnad Ahmad 156/2)

Abu Hurairah narrated from the Prophet Muhammad SAW that he said:
I swear by Him in whose hands rests my life or death that you would definitely witness advent of the Ibne Maryam (Son of Mary); a truthful judge (among faiths/religions), he would break the Cross (with arguments) and kill the swine and suspend the war (for religious conversion).
(Bukhari Kitabul Anbeya, Bab Nazul-e Essa Ibne Maryam)

From Quran:

The Holy Quran : Chapter 4: Al-Nisa’

[4:158] And for their saying, ‘We did slay the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah;’ whereas they slew him not, nor did they bring about his death upon the cross, but he was made to appear to them like one crucified; and those who differ therein are certainly in a state of doubt about it; they have no certain knowledge thereof, but only pursue a conjecture; and they did not arrive at a certainty concerning it.
[4:159] On the contrary, Allah exalted him to Himself. And Allah is Mighty, Wise.

With the Advent of the PromisedMessiah 1835-1908 and his proving with solid arguments that Jesus did not die on Cross but he died naturally in India this has already happened.

Thanks

I can’t believe you’re still spinning that line on these Catholic forums. I admire your persistance, but nobody believes you.

Hi

I think that only shows that our Catholic friends have a very narrow view of the first century history of the world. Jesus went Eastward after getting saved from death on the Cross to preach his teachings in the Jews settled there. At least I think you should for Jesus’ sake look into his life accounts there. It won’t harm you anyway.

Thanks
