Who is the Whore of Babylon?

Does any of this even matter? The only time you can do ANYTHING whether for good or for evil is what little time YOU personally have on earth. When that time ends, it is YOUR end time. Period.

Every time I see a discussion like this I’m reminded of grade school, when ten minutes before the bell someone would start packing up their belongings. The rustling would cause others to pack up thinking the end of class was very near and soon the entire class would be all packed up and sit waiting for ten minutes. Ten minutes, by the way, that could’ve been used productively. Don’t waste time waiting for Jesus, he’s here. He’s hungry, he’s thirsty, he’s naked.

Don’t freak out. Are we at the end? Well, it’s hard to see how things could get much worse, but that doesn’t mean we need to paralyze ourselves. We need to do the same thing that Christians have been called to do for the last 2011 years. Don’t waste time, YOU don’t have much left. As for the end of the world? Only God knows, leave it up to him.

As long as you’ve got your ducks in a row, it won’t matter if the world ends tonight.

If it didn’t matter, why would God have bothered to put it in the Bible? Of course it matters, even if there’s nothing you can do to change it.

You do realize he’s not-subtly calling the Most Holy Mother Church that? The answer to the rhetorical question, “Can we identify this church now?” from his post is clear; he only adds “the future” to soften the impact.

Of course I didn’t think he was referring to the Catholic Church. Nothing I wrote implied that he was. He made the statement that, in the Bible, a woman was a symbol for a church. I was asking where he got that.

Catholic Theology teaches that it was either Rome or Jerusalem. Protestants teach just about anything that they can dream up. However, we know that the beast of revelation was most likely Nero since in Hebrew his name added up to the number 666; and in some copies of revelation the number of the beast is 616, which is Nero’s name added up in Latin. This gives the story some context and should not be denied because of the coincidence between copies. The whore of Babylon has already fallen and teaching more leans toward Jerusalem as being Babylon since Rome didn’t fall until hundreds of years after revelation was written. But the possibility remains that Rome remains a possibility of being the whore. Remember, John said all these things would take time shortly and not thousands of years in the future. At the moment we are in the millenium of the reign of Christ–this is what the Church teaches. It is not a literal 1000 years but symbolic of a period of time where the Church is built up.

The child born to the women with the sun at her head and moon at her feet is Christ. So that puts a little perspective of just where in Revelation things are occuring; so anything that happens around the time where the child is born (who rules with a rod of iron) is fulfilled in or around the time of Christ–that is why it is thought that we are in the millenium of Christ reign, where the Church is built up.

Alot of Catholics will say that revelation is symbolic but that is because they have no knowledge and have never done a serious study on the book. It is literal to the point where you can actually understand that actual events are being described within the text. One of the reasons why it is believed that Jerusalem is referred to as Babylon is because of the hierarchies persecution and rejection of Christianity; and the eventual destruction of the temple and Jerusalem in 70 ad.

Although I hold to the view that says it’s either Rome or Jerusalem, I don’t believe the Church has been dogmatic on the subject enough to justify calling it her teaching. If someone wants to think Babylon refers to Pittsburgh they may be dumber than a bag of rocks but they aren’t heretics.

What is accepted within the Church is called teaching. The Church’s best judgment was that the whore of Babylon was either Rome or Jerusalem. The Church does not hold it to be true that the whore of Babylon is any city in the future from the time of Christ due to the context of Revelation concerning that portion of Scripture. In other words, we know that the whore of Babylon has passed because the child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron, born to the woman, is none other than Christ himself. So the whore of Babylon must be a city within the time of Christ.

There is theology on the matter and theologians and scholars (catholics) agree on what I have said about Revelation. Thinking that there is no teaching on Revelation is false. The Church interprets and tries to understand every piece of scripture that there is, including Revelation. The Church isn’t going to leave Revelation uninterpretted. It is the Dogma of the Church to interpret every word within scripture in order to edify the Church with the Word of God. The Church interprets every word of scripture so that it’s foundation, being the word of God, is like a rock.

Thank you. We are advised to ‘get out of Babylon’ so as not to incur her judgement. For some reason, the antichrist will destroy Babylon and introduce his own tyrannical economic system.

What we need to do is choose to serve God… not mammon, nor the antichrist.
