I should actually start on thread concerning genealogical research, the Family History Center’s (or, as they’re known in the UK & Canada, Centres), PAF & other apps made available from the LDS church, etc…
I’ll quickly share the story of how I got started - and it all starts with the LDS church (sort of!). In 1981 I received a letter from a woman with my Mom’s last name who was living in Seattle and she was interested in finding out about the circumstances of the death of one of my uncles and his two sons in Alaska (long story there, but an interesting one!). She was LDS, a ‘fifth’ cousin to me, and helping out a ‘third’ cousin who taught at BYU with his genealogical research. I sent her copies of newspaper clippings, magazine stories, etc., about my uncle’s and cousins’ deaths and she sent me a very nice ancestry list and that just whetted my appetite. But I really didn’t do anything with it until I moved to the UK and that was when I found, about a miles walk from my flat, the LDS FHC (wasn’t called that at the time, though) in London. Three years later I was able to send my two cousins gedcom files that took us 500 years further back to a common ancestor who was a KING of Wales! We’ll - a small ‘k’ king - and just a portion of Wales - but he was deeded more land by William I and was quite a wealthy (and long-lived) man for his time.
Never able to get as much information on my paternal side as Eastern Europeans seemed to travel round quite a bit - only have that side going back to the 16th century.
But - had it not been for the fine men and women who volunteered their time at the London FHC, I would never have thought to begin and would never have been able to amass such a HUGE amount of material.
